I dont know exactly where Hairston is with the return from illness but I just wonder what an OL of Henderson/Hairston at the tackles, Glenn and Urbik at G and Wood at C could do.

In 2 years though? It's not as if they have hit an age wall or been injured.

I don't want to turn this into an EJ thread, but one thing fitz did well was make the offensive line look better than they probably are.

Guys ascend and descend in this league all the time, at all kinds of ages and at all positions. A lot of it has to do with film study on guys and what works against them. A lot has to do with scheme and coaching. IMO, Urbik was fair when he got here, then got much better, then regressed dramatically the following year.

Actually, that was the progression we saw with Pears, and the progression we saw with Fitz, too. And Chandler for that matter.

Sometimes players just have an off year. Urbik does not look any better now, and he's not physically gifted enough to overcome what he lacks. When he was decent, he was overachieving. The

yes in 2 years. Not every player is capable of having a solid 10 year career. Limited ability, injuries and probably other factors account for the drop off. Some are just not good enough for a extended period of time. Every player is unique.

It's tough for me to disagree with you because I haven't studied these guys in any detail.

Statistically, I would bet that when fitz was here, they were part of lines that gave up fewer sacks and ran the ball more effectively--which might be because Urbik and pears were better, or because fitz was better at getting rid of the ball and chan better at using the RBs, or maybe both (or maybe neither).

Run schemes were very different between the two staffs. Marrone wants to run a power run game (even when in the gun) and that is not the strength of Urbik and Pears IMO. Gailey's scheme played to the roster's strength very well.

Bring back Chan! Bring back Chan!

It's funny that when Fitz was QB and Chan head coach, everyone was very cool with both Urbik and Pears on the right side, and the FO re-signed both guys to longish-term deals.

Now, suddenly, they both are terrible?

+1. It's only when Marrone, the offensive line specialist, took over than Urbik and Pears (and Spiller and Stevie Johnson and Chandler) started to stink. Coincidence? And don't blame it on Manuel because Fitz is not any better than Manuel.

It's difficult to project how a say who played say at Louisville really compares to say a guy who played at USC. The USC guy is going up against Bama, Florida, Georgia, and Auburn almost every year, where the Louisville guy was playing U Conn and Cinnci The n along comes a guy like an Andre Reed or even a Phil Simms who played at some lower level program, how will he project?

Where as the engineer has reliable data to equate those two situations.

You know, it's amazing that professional scouts and GMs of NFL teams cannot figure out who might be able to play in the league before they draft them. Imagine if an engineer was this dumb and didn't know how to build the foundation of a bridge.

The guy the Bills pick in 2nd round is a dud and the one they pick in the 7th is starting! Just amazing.

As others have said - you're confused about Pears - noone here ever said he was good - he's been decent at times.

Let's face it fellas. Our offensive scheme is terrible. Power running game out of the shotgun? That right there says it all.

Spiller was injured and still turned out n OK season

Chandler actually had his best season as a Pro!

SJ13 was injured and didnt play the entire season.

They all played with 3 different starting QB's with little to no starting exp in the NFL!

Hopefully with Glenn back this O starts to GEL and it produces a decent starter at both G's

I've been sounding the alarm on Hackett for awhile now, but I'll wait until the regular season starts and just chalk this all up to pre-season.

Which is even more impressive when you consider that he tore his ACL on 12/23/12 and by the time the 2013 season was over, he wasn't even a year removed from surgery.

How is Marrone considered an offensive line specialist any more than any other former offensive line coach. Do we even know if he was a good line coach? I think it's rather naive to think that just because Marrone was a O-Line coach or a former lineman that the players will be better because of it or that the team would put more emphasis on the line than a team without a former lineman as coach.

Yeah he was slowed by his surgery. But I also think that despite his numbers, he was significantly worse last year than 2-3 years ago. And no team wanted him at all, even for marginal money in FA, which should tell you what kind of year he had.
