Does he make the team? This Bills Mafia blogger says he doesn't on his prediction of the 53. His followers weren't happy. #savegarrison

He points out Lee Smith has taken snaps at LS in camp.

@RQUINN619: out of all the controversial cuts on my #Bills 53-man roster prediction, GARRISON SANBORN cut is RIP'ing my mentions. http://t.co/VZnrhMchWy

Well, it's one of those positions that goes unnoticed and under-appreciated when they do their job well, but becomes a HUGE problem when you don't have a good one.

He is one of the best in the league, why would you cut him? … To help create more need? … Then scramble around a few years, experimenting with different options, until, hopefully, you find a solution again soon? … just what this team needs, right? another need to fill?

The Bill's would be complete fools to cut him, and if they did, he would have his choice of teams to sign with the next day.

Whelp, we now know Gugny is on twitter as rquinn619.

I seriously doubt that they would go with Smith. A blocking TE is likely to get dinged up during a season and where does that leave you? Sure, you'd have an emergency LS (what Smith is now) but now you're talking about your 3rd best at a position being the focal point of all punts and FG attempts.

Yup.

You better be damn sure Smith can long snap (or someone else) before releasing Sanborn. I don't necessarily like using a spot for the guy, but if you can't long snap, it makes for a lot of problems.

I started a thread sometime last year asking why we carry a long snapper, what makes these guys so unique that one of these other world class athletes can't get good at it. In the old days, it was either a center or a TE or a LB who did it. Nowadays, since they can't line up over center you could even have a Steve Tasker type of guy do it because the main part of the job after snapping for a punt is running down field and head hunting.

There's a reason we don't have a holding specialist with his own roster spot. Used to be the backup QB did the holding but now it's almost universally the punter, probably because he has more practice time available to work with the kicker.

If we were to tie down an extra roster spot for a special teams guy, it would make more sense to have a kickoff specialist who can boom touchbacks all the time.

But my preference would be to go the other way: turn your kicker into a punter so you only carry one specialist on the 53 man roster, and free up the P and LS spots for other guys who can fill in but can also play another useful position in a jam.

Does it matter? We're talking about a LS.

My god can the season just start already? The idiots are out in full force again this offseason

In my opinion, only an idiot would not realize the importance of this thread and only a bigger idiot would support the decision to leave Garrison Sanborn off of the 53-man roster.

I'm actually against this idea. If Smith is going to play serious minutes in the offense, and by all appearances he is, what happens if he gets injured on game day? No long snapper?

Sorry, but unless I've got two different guys on my team that my punter and kicker are comfortable with, I'm not cutting Sanborn. I want two guys active on game day that can long snap. Now, if Lee Smith and, say (I'm just picking a guy at random here), Chris Gragg can BOTH long snap, then by all means, cut Sanborn.

You have to have a dedicated LS.... I agree with all the points above... But DC Tom says I'm an idiot... Does that count for anything? Lol

Which specific idiocy are you finding in this thread?

The idiocy of cutting a proven commodity with no issues to create a hole that doesn't need to be created.

The importance of cutting a guy who has not been a liability to us at all? This isn't important because it makes no sense to cut a guy who has been a solid performer at a job that isn't all that easy to do, but yet people feel we should cut him? (Not YOLO, i know he's reporting what he saw), it just makes zero sense.

I'm sure it was just a team doing it's due diligence and seeing what the backup plan can do... The team has to rely on someone if Sanborn gets hurt...

I'm glad they aren't relying on someone volunteering to be the LS claiming they did it in midget football

Does it matter? We're talking about a LS.

Saving that specialty roster spot by keeping a position player that is subpar at his position and subpar at snapping works right up until Ryan Neill bounces one to your holder or misses your punter by 2 yards.

Sanborn impresses me as a LS because he probably makes more tackles in punt coverage than anyone besides the gunners.

You and I may disagree with even the thought of cutting him, but that hardly classifies as stupidity. It is a perfectly fine discussion to have, and a rather welcome break from the same old 'EJ Sucks' , 'Trade Spiller' threads.

I think Rob Quinn is a good writer and seems knowledgeable about football. But I don't think he has any inside info per se to think that this will happen, even though he is predicting it. I also don't think he knows how good of a player Sanborn is on ST. I think he will stay but this season, it is going to be hard to make those last cuts for sure. I truly think they are seriously considering keeping Hopkins as a KO Specialist, which takes up an extra roster spot. Edited by YoloinOhio
