Best Player Available Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 I only have an example of why his 1st down numbers may be low... That's it... CJ is not the all around RB.... He's not a workhorse... Everyone should know that by now... He's a "waterbug". How soon we forget...........
Proteus Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 (edited) In a spread offense with a good QB, Spiller is an MVP candidate. Edited August 9, 2014 by Proteus
reddogblitz Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 I would argue CJ's whole career is based on cherry-picked stats. What wins football games? First downs and TD's? Or 20+ yard plays? Which is more important to you in an RB I want both. I like when a team has a bruiser run over guys back like Fred and a speedster like CJ. Mix it up. Use fast guy early and in 4th Q when the D is tired pound it in. Giants won a SB with that philosophy. Earth Wind And Fire. Dixcon and Brown appear to be a style very similar to Fred. Fred and CJ compliment each other very well. I hope we don't trade CJ.
bbb Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 I'm not reading through 9 pages. What would we even get back that would make this worth it? So, we'd have what 3 first round and 1 very productive 2nd rounder (Travis) that we would get rid of (running backs) in the last decade?

Perhaps CJ could join 2 other Bills RB castoffs in winning a SB. The Beast and Willis. I think Willis was on Ravens when they won, I don't know, maybe not. but still ...
reddogblitz Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 There's a gas station by my house that has gas pumps with a TV screen on it playing commercials. I don't go there anymore.

Which is more important to you in an RB? Yards per carry. If you look at the top yards per carry RBs in the league you will always find the top RBs in the league.
FireChan Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Yards per carry. If you look at the top yards per carry RBs in the league you will always find the top RBs in the league. Except CJ doesn't belong in the top 3 or top 2 or whatever he is in terms of YPC. Hence, cherry picked stats. If you cherry pick first downs for example, he's 42nd. Is that too low? Sure it is, he isn't a worse runner than Terelle Pryor. But who are the top ten in first downs? Right around the same top ten for YPC. They get first downs AND have a high YPC. But CJ doesn't. CJ has talent and does some things well. But when it comes down to it, there are still at least 10 other RB's I take before him if I'm starting a team from scratch. I want CJ on this roster in the role he has (at least). But I doubt that will happen.

truth on hold Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 truth is he doesn't fit within the scheme, and his ability to run between tackles and overall durability are highly suspect. Still what would we get for an RB with these known question marks, with a year left before he becomes a FA, in a league where RBs are devalued? After the Trent Richardson debacle, I say odds of a #1 are very low. Best case a #2 from a good team, but more likely a 3rd. If it's a 3rd for a back of his caliber (even given question marks), might as well just keep him, and see what he can do in a contract year.
Buffalo Barbarian Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 I was just watching sports center and the ESPN analyst said Buffalo will NOT keep four RB's going into the season. Look for the Bills to unload CJ Spiller before the season starts according to him. This could get interesting........... Trade for another player or trade for an extra draft pick for next season? sure but we still a back to replace him, maybe we can snag Bo Oliver if he makes the practice squad
reddogblitz Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 truth is he doesn't fit within the scheme, and his ability to run between tackles and overall durability are highly suspect. If you can't figure out how to use a RB as talented as CJ in your "system", you've got a dumb system.

I could (and truthfully have) said the same thing about Stevie. But being honest, lack of talent is no longer an issue on offense. Whats most important now is making the pieces fit together Edited August 9, 2014 by Joe_the_6_pack
CountryCletus Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 We will prob get 3 entire drafts for him....
NastyNateSoldiers Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Spiller is set to have a big year. It's a contract year. We need that kind of productivity to get into the playoffs. The catch 22 (or 28) is that once he has a good year, his contract demands will be outrageous and he is all but certain to leave. And on the flip side, if he has a bad year then we won't want him anyways. So my guess is he's gone either way I agree plus people seem to forget if he has a great yr we can franchise him. He's ours for 2yrs at least. Plus we can trade him if we wanted. Definitely got options

flmike Posted August 9, 2014 Posted August 9, 2014 Yeah, I watched him all last year and my strongest memory is him loping to the QB, seeing no hole and bouncing outside to lose 2 yards. I'm not sure why everyone wants to keep him so badly. We should all know not to trust our eyes in preseason anymore. In fact, everyone should just stop watching the 1st quarter. Everything changes once the regular season starts.
