Robert Woods has got it right: This team lacks Focus

Here is a snippet from the Bills-Carolina Preview (Posted on buffalobills.coms)

“A lot of the stuff was small details, not getting our depth on some routes and stuff like that,” said Robert Woods. “That just takes focus. We’ve got to pay attention to it in the game this Friday. But we’ve been able to get a lot of work in.”

The NFL is a parity driven league and a game of inches. Games are won-lost by plays that are made and plays that were just missed respectively. The good teams are well coached and the players are focused in making their throws, catches, tackles, interceptions. The difference in talent level is minimal; It boils down to how they play every snap for SIXTY Minutes on game day. The Bills have been POOR at that Task. A lot of that is mental ability to stay focused and that comes from coaching.

The reason a Brady or Manning are successful is because those minute details matter to them and that is the difference between an incomplete pass and a TD.

Maybe that's just what Marrone complained to Woods about Woods, and Woods is thinking "its not just me."

Maybe Marrone told Woods "its the whole team," but Marrone was really just talking about Woods.

I dont think coach Woods is in all the meeting rooms. And I dont think we, as fans, can know or follow enuf of the players' assignments to know if they are off, or to what extent. Sure, more focus is better, but we dont know how bad it is hurting us.

(by the way, your original thread title "Wood has got it right" was misleading. I thought it was Eric Wood, whose opinion i'd give ten times more respect than Robert Woods)

Besides the Wood vs Woods gaffe, I think honestly this team has failed due to lack of focus. So many games were lost because they couldn't focus on protecting the football, or not making the catch that will move the marker, or not making the throw to get the 1st down and kill the clock. We always talks about "if only xxx had done yyy on the play, we would have won" and a lot of times it is because they fail to focus. If Chandler and Stevie focused on protecting the football after the catch, we win at least two games last year.

You're making kind of a leap with this fairly innocuous quote. He was talking about himself, not the team. And he was one of the best players on the field in that game, he looked focused to me. He has also been one of the best players in camp. Maybe he has things to work on it reach his full potential, but it seems marrone thought he needed motivation, not focus. As for the rest of the team, what evidence is there they lack focus?

ok so you are saying the 2013 Bills lacked focus. I thought you were talking about the current team since you said "lacks."

Isn't this team an extension of the team that finished 2013......and they appear to have the same problems in 2014. Everyone except Stevie and Byrd (of note) are returning from the previous season. It is not a leap of faith. and by the way Woods clearly said "Lack of focus" not Motivation.

Woods is clearly talking about himself. Especially after Marone explained a few things after Wednesday's practice

Quoting: http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-1/4-things-to-know-from-Wednesday%E2%80%99s-practice/33ec6ed2-a531-4295-9e14-fab852877bfb

Head coach Doug Marrone revealed that he had a discussion with Woods on the practice field Wednesday.

“We know Robert can play three positions for us,” said Marrone. “We’re just trying to figure out what’s the best combination that we have out there. When Robert first came to camp he didn’t do that. Not to say he was complacent, but I told him that when he plays with that little chip on his shoulder, he’s a darn good football player. I said, ‘We need to see you play more with a chip on your shoulder every single day.’ And I think you’ll see that same result that you were able to see from the game and practice.”

Focus has been a huge issue. The Bills 2013 season was done in by not 1 but 2 clear cut "lack of focus" issues. Stevie's and Chandler's ridiculous drops at the end of that Atlanta game were the final crushing blows to last season. It was so crushing that the Bills entire team was not focused for the Tampa game the following week. Those two Bill vets really screwed over the team and the rookie QB Manuel's progress.

Or Maybe they are just good talented players. Not sure if they are Hall of Fame Good, but the two QB's you mentionned have dominated the league for more than a decade.

Exactly. There is no accountability in the Bills locker room and that will be their undoing. Someone has to get in these guys faces and tell them you're not doing your job. Does that guy exist in the Bills locker room?

no, not the same team. Additions and subtractions. Players and coaches. Since the season hasn't started yet, how do you know they have the same problems?

He does exist, and Wood years ago told Maybin what he thought of him. i would say there are several actually.

Another being Kyle Williams. But in a sense there is no accountability. i have seen the 100 million dollar man just go through the motions the last two games in 2012. Not being able to close out games for years now has been for the most part the QB carousel.

meaning they all have sucked, except for a game or two each year.

Until there is a bona fide QB who can do just that. then maybe the rest of the team will decide that it is indeed worth playing all 60 minutes. Apparently the current starter will get another season to figure it out if i am reading the pulse of this board correctly. So, the honeymoon easily goes into next year in Bills country at that position. i wish Jimbo was healthy enough to get in his face this preseason at camp and tell him what it takes to be a leader. I don't see it yet

I forgot to put a wink...so here it is.... :flirt:

I get irritated reading that the best players in NFL history study more, practice more and make sure those minute details are in check. GIVE ME A BREAK.

Lets take tennis for example. I guess #5,6,7,8,9,10 in the world practice less then Nadal, Murray, Federer and Djokovic. Those top 4 players of the last 10 years pay attention to the minute details that Tsonga, Raonic, Wawrinka and other dont.... :wallbash:

Talent is talent. Bills are lacking this talent at QB for over a decade now. DRAFT A QB every year unitl you find that player.

I personally think that MW is invisible at times but to say that its a bad thing that he goes through the motions when the team is eliminated from the playoffs is nonsense...what do you want him to do? Run like crazy, be hungry, sacrifice his body only to watch Fitztragic and company turn the ball over? Again, you pointed out the last 2 games of 2012. The bills did the same this year against the Pats. Its human nature.

Making excuses for Mario while I understand what you are saying certainly plays right into the lack of leadership, accountability thing were talking about. What kind of example is he sending to younger players? Worry about yourself first? And compare that to Freddy who plays ball out no matter if eliminated from the playoffs or down by 20 right until the final gun. Thats the difference between sucking for 14+ years and being a perennial play off team.

+1. And we know that Mario can demonstrate that intensity. He did it against the Panthers and Ravens, games that we won both times.
