RuntheDamnBall Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 So based on that one example, no coach should be fired until they prove over at least four years that they are inept, correct? Similarly, because Tom Brady was drafted in the sixth round, it is easy to find a franchise QB on the last day of the draft. In many cases it is crystal clear after two years whether a coach can cut it, or not. None of the coaches that the Bills ran out of town in the past 12 years have done a single thing since being fired to make anyone think that the Bills jumped the gun. With Marrone, there are some positive signs, but also a number of major question marks. I am guessing that the picture will be pretty clear after this year. Nope. Based on that example, you need context and not just a record to evaluate whether Marrone is the guy. He could luck into some wins Jauron playoff year-style, and not be the guy. Conversely he could have some bad fortune but have done well and done everything in his power to win.
MRW Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 It's 1/32 but how attractive would the Bills job be if they go 6-10. If they're 6-10 I think it'd mean they've had terrible QB play. No 1st rd pick and no QB wouldn't make the Bills an attractive job. To go along with what would be 15 straight losing seasons. I don't think he'll be fired but I could see Coughlin as a guy pushed out. I don't agree. I think people would be very willing to come here if there was an understanding that the FO would aggressively pursue FA QBs in that scenario. I believe that with this roster, if EJ flounders that is the route they will need to go anyway.

This team is built to compete now. I could see someone like Hoyer or Cousins. There are obviously more desirable options like Alex Smith and potentially even Romo. In terms of Marrone, I would not say that he is definitely safe after this year. However, there are definitely more guys than just Jason Garrett ahead of him on the chopping block.

I never suggested otherwise. I just disagree with the argument that he automatically deserves three or more years. As you say, it depends on the context, as well as the record. I have to say, though, if the Bills go 6-10 (or worse) again, it would take some really compelling "context" for Marrone to not get fired.
reddogblitz Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 if they go 6-10. If they're 6-10 I think it'd mean they've had terrible QB play Wow. What an assumption. There could be many reasons a team could go 6-10 with decent QB play. Like, a bad defense, or a kicker that missed 3 game winning FGs or injuries to Fred, CJ, Brown, Watkins and Woods. Horrid kicking teams giving up points. Coaching blunders like DJ used to make (and coach Marrone did last year) costing a couple of wins. QB putting the football right in a WRs hands in the EZ in overtime only have him drop it. On and on ... It doesn't ALWAYS come down to QB play. Sometime it do, and sometimes it don't.

Wouldn't shock me to see Eli Manning become available if the Giants falter this season.
Buffaloed in Pa Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I don`t know about that. But I didn`t like his comments on Andre Reed. Sounded alittle jealous or something.
Rico Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Good point. Jauron and Gailey were let go years too early. If they only had more time...
1B4IDie Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 There is no way he is fired if Pegula is the owner. Seriously can you be the isn't fired? What do you win?
RussellDopeland Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I don't think so but according to Vegas he comes in right after Jason Garrett as the 2nd choice to be the next head coach fired: https://www.sportsbo...categoryId=1085 This is a little odd to me. He certainly has at least this season. There are other guys (Allen) that may not. It's obvious that "sportsbook.ag" has a source- and that source would be Tim Graham.
thewildrabbit Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Absolutely Marrone is hot seat material. As it is, the Bills would have to finish 10-6 just to bring his W/L record to .500. He came from college ranks with Chip Kelly and they'll be compared to each other until one of them gets fired. If I were a betting man.. I look at the 2013 season and see a multitude of critical mistakes from the Bills GM, HC, OC, and coaching staff. Those type of mistakes simply don't happen with good regimes, and Chip Kelly is a great comparison. One college to NFL HC coach went 6-10 and the other 10-6, and one actually had previous NFL experience in many areas. There is no question that the Bills had greater talent on the defense then the Eagles, and almost equal talent on offense. So, it all comes down to coaching / GM, and the Bills weren't even close in 2013. I honestly don't know why some here are even thinking about other teams coaches. What matters is what the Buffalo Bills do this season, and nothing else is of any concern. I'm hoping the new owner whomever it is will not tolerate any more losing. I know I'm probably the only one here, but if this staff doesn't hit at least 8-8, and show great promise I'd clean house from CEO to ball boys.

Keep in mind the injuries to our secondary to start the season. Justin Rogers was our starting CB for the first 4 games and cost us two wins and did his best to lose use the Baltimore game We also had weeks that our RB core was decimated, we started 3 different QBs and TJ Graham started wayyyy to many games year due to injury. The eagles were healthy all year and got better after Vick was hurt.

I'm actually very optimistic about this team's chances now that the new era is here, for the first time really since the TD years.... but if they end up tanking another season, everyone needs to go.

When's the last time they tanked a season, though? The year before they got Dareus? If you come up just short or are mediocre, it's a lot harder to make that decision. Maybe not for a fan but for a front office, definitely.

The eagles were healthy all year and got better after Vick was hurt. It wasn't just the injuries to the secondary, as the starting LG, and replacement for Levitre graded as the very worst player in the entire NFL after 5 games. That includes Justin Rodgers! The bigger question to me is why was that scrub on the team to begin with, and what scouts thought that he and Colin Brown could get the job done? Injuries happen to every team, and that was Jauron's excuse year after year. Belchick loses brady and they still go 11-5. Now that you mention the Eagles, Chip Kelly instituted a new state of the art camp, diet & nutrition, exercise regime, workout pace. http://www.nfl.com/n...revent-injuries If you want to go with this most ridiculous of measures, care to guess how many seasons it took for Bill Belicheck to get his W-L record to .500? He finally achieved that mark in his 9th year of head coaching. His 4th with the Patriots. He took the craptastic Cleveland Browns to the playoffs with Vinnie Testastupid at QB. Cleveland in all their futility have yet to equal that 11-5 season from 2001. The point is that his teams showed improvements, as he took over a complete disaster 3-13 team and went 6-10 the very next year. Edited August 2, 2014 by FeartheLosing
YoloinOhio Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Biggest problem for the Falcons is what is their identity? Seattle/San Francisco are strong defensive and running teams, Denver/New England/Green Bay have focus on their offense. It doesn't necessarily have to come from the coach (it doesn't for Denver or New England), but if you don't have a star player leading the team the coach needs to put his stamp on it, and Smith... like his team... just seems boring. Heck, even his name. i agree with this. Not to pile on the falcons, but when it was announced they were going to bd on hard knocks, my reaction was zzzzzzzzz
billsfan89 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 There has to be some progress made, 8-8 should be enough to keep his job. But a 6-10 season puts him on the bubble. It would be hard to retain a coach after back to back 6 win seasons or worse, esp when significant resources were put into the teams.
White Linen Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Constant change. It's how you build a winner. What come first: Consistency then you'll win or win therefore don't need to change?
Ted William's frozen head Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Good point. Jauron and Gailey were let go years too early. I say lets bring Jauron back. After all, the Bills could always use another tackling dummy during camp.
