Allow me to re-state. Hopkins is a kickoff specialist only.

Jay Skurski@JaySkurski 34s

At kicker, Marrone says Dustin Hopkins will have to play his way onto the roster as a kickoff specialist, so Dan Carpenter won't be pushed.

He was 2-3 as a starter last year--both wins coming against Miami; one in which the D pitched a shutout and the other in which the D forced a last-second turnover for the win.

I need my backup to be able to win me a game; getting just close enough to lose isn't going to do it IMO.

This just in... We need our STARTER to be able to win games first... If our backup wins game and starter doesn't, the backup should be the starter... I get what you are saying- but we need to prove we have a starting QB before we can worry about a solid backup

Obviously EJ needs to step his game up, as he's not in a spot where he can win games with his arm consistently. There were times last season that he made those kinds of throws at key times (Atlanta and Jacksonville come to mind), which is encouraging. I would also assert that uncertainty at starting QB is all the more reason to have a solid backup.

I guess my whole point is that if we get past EJ this year, we're in trouble.

John Wawrow@john_wawrow 4m

EJ and Marrone had very conflicting views about how #Bills offense performed today. EJ didn't see anything wrong. Marrone called it sloppy.

John Wawrow@john_wawrow 3m

Marrone was also unhappy with EJ's inability to get the ball off in several 7-on-7 drills. #BillsCamp

Sal Maiorana@salmaiorana 28s

A bit disappointed in EJ Manuel today at presser. He, and offense, clearly had a bad day, yet EJ's take was he thought it was a great day

Sal Maiorana@salmaiorana 20s

Two minutes later, Marrone comes to podium clearly in a bad mood over what he saw. Blamed troubles on lack of execution. Come on, EJ

Sal Maiorana@salmaiorana 30s

It's only 3 days into camp, and it was 1st pads practice, so we should all give offense a pass today, but it needs to improve moving forward

Matthew Fairburn@MatthewFairburn 14s

There could be a competition for the #Bills No. 2 QB job. Jeff Tuel has looked better than Thad Lewis early in camp. Getting reps with twos.

I would put money on Tuel winning back the no. 2 job-- though he needs to be strong in the pre-season games.

The upside on Tuel seems higher than Thad, and I think the staff will give Tuel every chance to unseat Thad.

I sincerely wonder if John Wawrow comes off as a complete negative nancy in his tweets alongside his counterparts.....

I know this will be dismissed as "I am reporting what I see" but the others seem to understand that bad O line play and pressure go hand in hand with inaccuracy

Posted

really though-- what's EJ supposed to say? i would expect him to try to stay upbeat. Let the coaches talk about the bad stuff.

Tough call because I didn't hear the actual presser. I would like to know the context of what was asked and the rest of what he said, and how he said it. But to be fair, it is the 3rd day of practice, the season is over a month aaway, and I am really trying to not get overly excited or upset about anything.

Objective reporting?

That's odd, one reporter saw one thing, saying he's having an average day and the reporter who clearly has a narrowed opinion of EJ reports something else. That's not objective.

Odd that the vast majority of reports, not from fans, have pointed to a lot of positives with regards to the WR/QB. That's then backed up by fan accounts. How is it again that Sammy can have a good day, and the guy that threw him the ball can't as well?

EDIT: I'll take the "objective" reporting and raise you a "grain of salt"

You probably thought Losman was good when he hit Lee Evans on three passes in training camp too.

That seems an unfounded statement to me.

My point is hitting Sammy Watkins a few times doesn't mean EJ had a good practice.

I'm gonna go ahead and leave this thread before it goes way off the rails. That tends to happen anytime someone is critical of the Qb

I don't think Wayne or anyone else said he definitely had a good practice; I think we said that Wawrow's opinion should be taken with a grain of salt as he's got the appearance of a guy that has it in for EJ

Fluff....not necessarily critical.....but over the top critical?

EJ had some good throws and bad throws....its the first week of camp. The defense appears to be pretty good and making plays.

There have been several reports of improvement in footwork, mechanics, and movement........the O line is struggling.......and EJ hasnt been perfect

That seems an unfounded statement to me.

And honestly quite the opposite of Losman to be honest.

JP Losman had a great deep ball (which is a low percentage throw) and a bad short game

EJ Manuel appears to be struggling with the deep ball.....but appears to be more accurate in the short to intermediate area

They have opposite problems

I still think Cordy is coming back, but if he doesn't we are completely screwed.

Me too. Cordy Glenn is so unbelievably important to the success of this offense. If they can get through training camp with no major injuries, Dareus back on the field (with no suspension) and Glenn back in - optimism will be fully restored. I can't even get a pulse on the EJ thing - it almost seems like we won't know anything until week one is over with him.
