Why isn't every police-citizen encounter recorded these days?

Make the recordings from the officer's vest. Make them unalterable by the police and available to any citizen that wants to file an official complaint.

That by itself would discourage bullies from wanting to take the job of police officer. It would make it easier to weed out the bad apples without members of the police squad having to snitch on each other too.

In many cases guilty citizens would not fight the charges in court as often if they are captured demonstrating their guilt on camera, such as DUI's.

They do have such systems readily available, and grants are available for law enforcement agencies to purchase the equipment. Many larger organizations (or more accurately their unions) seem to rabidly opposed to wearing them. Of course the old cop refrain of "if you have nothing to hide..." doesn't apply to them.

In my county, every cop wears a Vie View camera on their chest. It works exceptionally well; there are zero questions as to what actually happened during an encounter. Neither the cop nor the accused can lie or exaggerate.

I'm not really pro-cop or anti-cop, but the outrage here seems to be manufactured at best. Was tackling him excessive? I don't know. Maybe. I didn't see what came before it. But to accuse them of killing the guy's a bit much. It's not like they shot him; he died of a heart attack. Death was not a reasonably foreseeable consequence of their actions.

Agreed.

If you resist arrest, cops get physical. Real shock there. If you are some 400 pound tub if goo who can't deal with a physical altercation, your best bet is to either not resist arrest or not be a criminal in the first place.

Cops, in general, are not good people. There was a major anonymous psychological profile taken of LEOs across the nation with a massive sample size back in the early 90's. More than 80% profiled as "bullies", while slightly less than 5% profiled as "white knights".

Cops are almost never there to help anyone. 99% of their job function is oppressive. They are the "boots on the ground" enforcement of the executive.

Choke hold by cop killed NY man, medical examiner says

(CNN) -- The New York City medical examiner's office Friday confirmed what demonstrators had been saying for weeks: A police officer's choke hold on a man being arrested for selling loose cigarettes killed him. The death has been ruled a homicide.

Eric Garner, 43, died July 17 after being confronted by policeon Staten Island for allegedly selling cigarettes illegally.

During the encounter, Garner raised both hands in the air and told the officers not to touch him. Seconds later, a video shows an officer behind him grab the 350-pound man in a choke hold and pull him to the sidewalk, rolling him onto his stomach. (continued at link)

Damn shame he didn't smoke pot. Pretty sure I read something around here that PROVED pot prevents strangulation; especially in folks pushing 20% of a ton.

No, pot only treats "disease," not "injury."
