No, the NFL strongly prefers a single owner to an ownership group. The 30% is the bare minimum that one person has to own for the group to be approved by the NFL.

Right from the article:

Some have speculated that the NFL is not interested in a large group of investors. But two people with knowledge of NFL team purchases says the league has one basic rule to address that issue: At least one person in the purchase group must own at least 30 percent of the team.

“All professional leagues prefer the groups to be smaller,” one source said. But some NFL owners argue that having a purchase group with six or eight members can “spread the risk” of the complications the Bills are now seeing having been owned by one individual, the source said.

It's not the hardline stance that you may believe.

Maybe it's not a hardline preference anymore, but as the first line states it's still the more accepted one.

Kind of...all the "single owner" provision means is that an individual needs to own at least 30% of the team. As the article posted earlier mentioned, an ownership group may even be preferable from a division-of-liability standpoint.

I'm also not completely convinced that (a) Bon Jovi's group would want to move the team, and (b) they wouldn't attempt to wait out the 6 years to do so if that's their plan.

It's 6 years, but then again it's "only" 6 years.

It takes time to build a new stadium (at least a few years worth of endless studies, design, planning, arguing, then groundbreaking and THEN actual building).

So from the Toronto Vultures' perspective, it's really just a few years as the new stadium is built. In the meantime, don't forget that the Toronto Series was only "postponed."

Why agree to postpone from their perspective? Simple: you get to play 1 game per year in your NEW city to build excitement as the new stadium is being built. Then you can do some BS "honor the history of the team in Buffalo" farewell tour that nobody will buy into but would be all for PR purposes until the permanent move is made.

has it ever been mentioned if the Toronto series could have been postponed to make it possible for another sports league team owner to buy the bills without violating any ownership rules?

using pegula as the example, would the NHL have issue with the Toronto series as it is the leafs' market? like how the nfl has the rule that you can own a team from a different league as long as it plays in the same market or there is no nfl team in the market area for the non nfl team. does the NHL have similar rules?

does this factor in with the Toronto series being put on hold?

If anything I think the postponement of the Toronto series would make the team more attractive to a Buffalo buyer.

Someone brought it up already, but the fact that the Pegula news keeps coming from Benigni is encouraging given his relationship with Ed Kilgoure (who now works for Pegula).

And you think Buffalo Bills fans will just sit back and support the team knowing it will be moving? They wouldn't exactly be able to keep the fact that they are building a stadium a secret. That would be 6 years of some terrible publicity for the NFL

Not to mention this all violates the terms of the lease.

Now converted to plain English: "With the additional support we earned throughout all Buffalo by parting ways with Ville Leino, we are actively bidding and are not going to tip our hand or give any indication about the ownership group we have strategically assembled."

That's a weird frickin' photo - all the segways + hot chick silhouette. I mean, I'm not hating it, but I have never seen that many segways in one place in my life.

Visit DC sometime. That's just a baby group. Not uncommon to see 30-40 pink segways rolling deep down the mall.

It is not lost on me that DC would be a haven for a big idea that was laughably obsolete.

i mentioned it at the time regarding the kilgore link.. and as this plays out, i consider benigni credible... not that anything was news today, but it certainly breeds a bit of confidence..

Yep I thought about that... Kilgore taking care of his old employee feeding him info but at the same time leaking to the advantage of Pegula.
