Nuclear bomb nearly detonated after falling on North Carolina

Recommended Posts

A recently declassified report sheds light on a 1961 near-nuclear-catastrophe in North Carolina. According to the documents, a B-52 bomber flying over the Tar Heel state broke up in mid-air, causing two hydrogen bombs to plummet to the Earth. Multiple safety devices on one of the bombs failed, with a detonation being prevented by "one simple, dynamo-technology, low voltage switch."

 Nuclear weapons engineering as explained by idiots.

The bomb was nowhere near detonation. The two safety devices that were "rendered ineffective" by the plane breaking up were switches that required power from the plane on command from the pilot to be closed - they were "rendered ineffective" in that they were LOCKED OPEN, in safe position.

And those two switches need to be closed to power up the bomb's on-board high-voltage power, which was necessary to detonate the bomb when the fuse was triggered. Even if the "one simple dynamo low-voltage switch" was in the "arm" position, the bomb was completely inert.

You should know by now that you can't let mere facts get in the way of a good fear inducing news story. B-)

Particularly if the story's on a Russia Times youtube video, which is the only authoritative source for information for stoner morons everywhere...

Joe remains convinced that the bomb was ert.

I can't wait till he hears about that time in 1983 when the Russians almost misinterpreted the sun glare....

I'm frankly surprised this kind of thing didn't happen more often during the 60s and 70s all things considered.

I think there were a few "Broken Arrows." I think there were a couple dozen over the years of the Cold War.

@ least they didn't blow N.Carolina back to the Stone Age... Oh, wait... That would have been an improvement for Tobacco Road. ;-P ;-P

Declassified report: Two nuclear bombs nearly detonated in North Carolina

By Emma Lacey-Bordeaux, CNN

Declassified documents that the National Security Archive released this week offered new details about the incident. The blaring headline read: "Multi-Megaton Bomb Was Virtually 'Armed' When It Crashed to Earth."

Or, as Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara put it in back then, "By the slightest margin of chance, literally the failure of two wires to cross, a nuclear explosion was averted."

A) It is widely known in the Carolina's, so much so its just considered lore.

B) We're talking about Goldsboro which is right up the road from Kinston. Those who have been to this area would likely believe it was actually hit by a nuclear bomb. (edit: This also would have saved us from that one blond chick who was hot for 5 seconds on My Name Is Earl and the Jerry Springer movie - since she was from there).

C) It is a lot further then they want you to believe to Raleigh. It's like the very outer border of each might make 50 miles distance. But then combine all of the hills and whatnot between, yeah.

D) All of this was reported last year and its not the only time this has happened.

Shirely, this is because CNN is **** tier reporting these days for the Nancy Grace fan women, the hysterial morons that fall in to the hype of the simplest overstatements too stupid to realize that it's nothing more then the little white speck atop a chicken droplet. In the end, all they're giving you is manure with a pretty title to draw your attention.

While they have your attention what else are you missing?!
