Mark Vader Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) A front loaded action heavy May has set the bar high for the 2014 Summer Season. Now the month of June starts and will continue to add to the action frenzy. For those who are getting exhausted by all the CGI, there will be some high profile alternatives that will focus on comedy, drama and family. Once again sequels lead the way this month. The most high profile of them now adds a fourth movie into a series that has grossed over 1 billion dollars domestically alone. The robots in disguise are back, as Paramount Pictures presents, "Transformers: Age of Extinction". An automobile mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down the Autobots and Decepticons - and a paranoid government official - on them. This movie has new Transformers, a new cast, but unfortunately the same director. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci & Kelsey Grammer. Dreamworks & 20th Century Fox, reunite Hiccup & Toothless in the long awaited "How To Train Your Dragon 2". When Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Starring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig & Djimon Honsou. Channing Tatum & Jonah Hill are back in "22 Jump Street", get it? After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college. Clint Eastwood directs the musical "Jersey Boys". The story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons. This is possibly the riskiest project of the summer. Adapting a popular broadway musical to the big screen, is not always an instant money maker. Throw in a cast headlined by a bunch of unknowns, an accomplished director who is known more for heavy drama, and a singing Christopher Walken; you end up with a big disaster or sheer brilliance. Starring John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza & Christopher Walken. Tom Cruise & Emily Blunt star in "Edge of Tomorrow". An officer finds himself caught in a time loop in a war with an alien race. His skills increase as he faces the same brutal combat scenarios, and his union with a Special Forces warrior gets him closer and closer to defeating the enemy. Also starring Bill Paxton & Brendan Gleeson. Guy Pearce & Robert Pattinson star in "The Rover". 10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened, ruthless ex-soldier tracks down the men who stole his only possession. As he travels through the lawless Australian outback, he takes a damaged young man as his unwitting accomplice. Chris Evans stars in "Snowpiercer". In a future where a failed global-warming experiment kills off all life on the planet except for a lucky few that boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe, where a class system evolves. Also starring Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton & Ed Harris. Shailene Woodley & Ansel Elgort star in "The Fault In Our Stars". Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. Finally in "Think Like A Man Too", All the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas, but plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event. Starring Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Michael Ealy, Adam Brody, Jerry Ferrera, Jenifer Lewis, Terrance Jenkins, Romany Malco & Dennis Haysbert. shrader Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I didn't think it was possible at this time of the year, but it has happened. I am not interested in a single movie on that list. I don't mean to belittle your work here Mark. I love these monthly threads. I guess it's just a weak month for me.

The only movie I really care about is "How To Train Your Dragon 2". Guy Pearce is a top notch actor, so I will probably check out "The Rover", and I may see Transformers out of obligation, even though I hate what Michael Bay has done to that property.
Mr Info Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 (edited) ...and I may see Transformers out of obligation, even though I hate what Michael Bay has done to that property. I just saw Mystery Men for about the 100th time and I don't want to derail your much appreciated monthly movie preview but here is an interesting clip of Michael Bay as a frat boy in MM. With his classic one-liner: "Dude, can we bring the brewskis?" Edited June 7, 2014 by Mr Info
mead107 Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 They were filming jump Street in New Orleans last year when we are down there for the Bills game
swnybillsfan Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 i have a soft spot for the transformers since i grew up with the toys and the cartoon. loved how to train your dragon so i am really looking forward to the sequel. 21 jumpstreet for me came right after the transformers, so this has nostalgic value as well, but i really enjoyed the 21 jumpstreet of a few years ago. guy peirce is one of my favorite actors because of movies like Memento, the Count of monte cristo and of course Ravenous, but he also seems to pick a clucnker from time to time.

I just lament on the idea of what if J.J. Abrams or Bryan Singer was in charge of the Transformers series, instead of Michael Bay. Can not wait for "How To Train Your Dragon 2", loved the first movie. Let's not forget Guy Pearce in "L.A. Confidential" as well.

"Dragons" was a quirky movie with lots of flavor and character that was just right in my wheelhouse. and the biggest beef i had with the transformers movies was just the fact that i do not like shia labouf. loved the action and the FX, and always love me some john turturro, but i kept waiting for the song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf_qfX9cKsQ Edited June 10, 2014 by swnybillsfan

I was waiting for the song too. The Transformers series has great action and killer special effects. What it severely lacks is an interesting storyline, not to mention fully fleshed out Transformers characters. I don't want just great special effects, I want it to be good science fiction as well. Transformers can be done seriously and still keep a certain level of fun. Watch the original "Transformers: The Movie" and the spin off series "Beast Wars". You'll see that within the right hands, it can be done in a great way. But eventually everything gets re-made in Hollywood. So I look forward to the day when this series gets brought back to life with someone who truly loves Transformers.
Mark Vader Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 Saw "How To Train Your Dragon 2", and really enjoyed it. Great animation, and it's great to see these characters again. A little more drama than the first film, but it does have plenty of laughs as well. Looking forward to the third film in this franchise.
Mark Vader Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 Here are this month's Independent Films. Keira Knightley & Mark Ruffalo star in "Begin Again". A chance encounter between a disgraced music-business executive and a young singer-songwriter new to Manhattan turns into a promising collaboration between the two talents. Also starring Adam Levine, Catherine Keener & Hailee Steinfeld. From United Kingdom, United States, Germany & Belgium comes "Third Person". Three interlocking love stories involving three couples in three cities: Rome, Paris, and New York. Starring Liam Neeson, Mila Kunis, Adrien Brody, Olivia Wilde, James Franco, Moran Atias, Maria Bello & Kim Basinger. Clark Gregg writes, directs & stars in "Trust Me". In an attempt to sign a Hollywood starlet, struggling talent agent and former child star Howard Holloway must contend with her volatile father, a scheming long-time rival, and a producer and casting director who despise him. Starring Felicity Huffman, Allison Janney, William H. Macy, Amanda Peet, Sam Rockwell, Molly Shannon, Saxon Sharbino & Paul Sparks. In "The Signal", On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic regains consciousness - only to find himself in a waking nightmare. Starring Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp & Laurence Fishburne. In "Anna", A man with the ability to enter peoples' memories takes on the case of a brilliant, troubled sixteen-year-old girl to determine whether she is a sociopath or a victim of trauma. Starring Mark Strong, Taissa Farmiga, Brian Cox & Indira Varma. Paul Rudd & Amy Poehler star in "They Came Together". When Joel and Molly meet, it's hate at first sight: his big Corporate Candy Company threatens to shut down her quirky indie shop. Plus, Joel is hung up on his sexy ex. But amazingly, they fall in love, until they break up about two thirds of the way through, and Molly starts dating her accountant. Also starring Bill Hader & Cobie Smulders. In "Obvious Child", A twenty-something comedienne's unplanned pregnancy forces her to confront the realities of independent womanhood for the first time. Starring Jenny Slate, Jake Lacy, Gaby Hoffman & Gabe Liedman. In "The Sacrament", A newsteam trails a man as he travels to an undisclosed location to find his missing sister. Upon entering "Eden Parish" and meeting the community's leader, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. Starring Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Kentucker Audley, Amy Seimetz & Gene Jones. In "Hellion", When motocross and heavy metal obsessed thirteen-year-old Jacob's increasing delinquent behavior forces CPS to place his little brother, Wes, with his aunt, Jacob and his emotionally absent father, Hollis, must finally take responsibility for their actions and for each other in order to bring Wes home. Starring Aaron Paul, Juliette Lewis, Josh Wiggins & Deke Garner. Finally, in the documentary, "Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger", Number 2 on America's Most Wanted list after Osama Bin Laden, James 'Whitey' Bulger terrorized the city of Boston for years without ever being charged with so much as a misdemeanor. Bulger was a monster, murdering over a dozen known victims, but did the FBI and local law enforcement give his reign of terror over South Boston a free pass? Calendar with Trailers. Mark Vader Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 Saw "Transformers: Age of Extinction", and it's pretty much more of the same stuff. The good news is that the storyline is better than in the previous 2 films, and there is no more Shia LaBeouf or John Turturro or the actors who played Spike's parents. Unfortunately we are reminded that Michael Bay is the director. There is nothing that can't be destroyed in an explosion, and half the movie is in slow motion. Bay also attempts to prove that he can do what James Cameron does, by making the movie as long and drawn out more than it needs to be. This movie is nearly 3 hours long. As for the acting, it's all typical. Mark Wahlberg plays his tough guy role, Nicola Peltz has legs & Jack Reynor is just there. Kelsey Grammer plays a good heavy as does Stanley Tucci, but boy he does a lot of screaming and yelling in the final 45 minutes. Once again the Autobots are given distinct, albeit annoying, personalities. Whereas the Decepticons are all baseless, mindless drones. Although sometimes you are left wondering who the bigger threat is. The "comedy" is , and once again we are focused a lot more on the humans peril than the Transformers. Although, there is a good subplot involving visits from other Transformers. Don't get me wrong, the movie is entertaining and the action is great, but this is not that much of a step up from the last film. Finally, can we please give Bumblebee a real voice and not have him use that stupid radio anymore.
IDBillzFan Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) Not sure how "Jersey Boys" will translate to film (though I'm encouraged that they're not using big names), but I saw the show in Vegas and it was absolutely outstanding. The story itself is completely engaging, but by the time you realize how many hits Frankie Valli had, with and without the Four Seasons, the show has you gripped. Edited July 2, 2014 by LABillzFan
shrader Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Finally, can we please give Bumblebee a real voice and not have him use that stupid radio anymore. I love how they fixed his voice at the end of the first movie but have completely ignored that moving forward. I haven't seen the movie and still don't plan on it.
Mark Vader Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 I love how they fixed his voice at the end of the first movie but have completely ignored that moving forward. I haven't seen the movie and still don't plan on it. You aren't missing much, and I don't know why I keep punishing myself by continuing to see this franchise when I know I will be disappointed. I know that as a real Transformers fan, I am not the target audience. It's amazing how Bay continues to dumb down this series. What I really hate is how they have handled Megatron. They make him out to be an incompetent buffoon of a leader, when actually the opposite is correct. They have turned one of the most bad-ass villains ever, into a wimp. That is insulting.

Last night my 9-year-old son and I were watching "Dark of the Moon." About an hour in he asks, "What's your least favorite movie ever?" I told him, "Titanic. What about you?" He says, "This. It's literally the worst movie ever in the history of the world."

LB3 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Believe the hype. Snowpiercer was amazing! A strong film from start to finish with some incredible acting and a unique plot. Jamie Bell and Octavia Spencer were really good but Chris Evans was unbelievable. I've always thought he was good but with every new role he takes he just keeps putting himself into the truly elite category. I will definitely be buying this one when available.

It was already released to Video On Demand (for Time Warner at least) so I just watched at home. It is a new release strategy it's trying.
