3rdnlng
Ah, Susan Rice doing what she does best: http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/susan-rice-bergdahl-served-honor-and-distinction_794066.html President Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, said on ABC that Bowe Bergdahl "served the United States with honor and distinction" and that "Sergeant Bergdahl wasn't simply a hostage; he was an American prisoner of war captured on the battlefield," “Certainly anybody who's been held in those conditions, in captivity for five years, has paid an extraordinary price. But that is really not the point. The point is that he's back,” Rice told ABC host George Stephanopoulos when asked whether Bergdahl was a deserter and whether he'd face punishment. “He is going to be safely reunited with his family. He served the United States with honor and distinction. And we’ll have the opportunity eventually to learn what has transpired in the past years, but what's most important now is his health and well being, that he have the opportunity to recover in peace and security and be reunited with his family. Which is why this is such a joyous day.” Elsewhere in the interview, Rice says, "Sergeant Bergdahl wasn't simply a hostage; he was an American prisoner of war captured on the battlefield." She adds, "We have a sacred obligation that we have upheld since the founding of our republic to do our utmost to bring back our men and women who are taken in battle, and we did that in this instance." DC Tom
My assumption was that a drone would follow the GPS at the desired point in time. Don't underestimate the intelligence value of letting these guys live, then watching who they talk to.
3rdnlng
Gator really pulled the trigger too quickly on this one. If the news continues to reinforce what it appears the situation to be, then Gator will have once again lived up to his reputation. He should have heeded my advice from around post #3 of this thread. IDBillzFan
Gator really pulled the trigger too quickly on this one. I have to admit I thought this would have been pushed off the pages today because of the global warming stupidity, but CNN is treating this like a downed Malaysian airliner, and even NBC is questioning what's going on. ExiledInIllinois
Don't underestimate the intelligence value of letting these guys live, then watching who they talk to. Yep! But, can we push a button and blow their heads off if they piss us off? Of course, make it roll down the stairs too. ;-) ;-) I have to admit I thought this would have been pushed off the pages today because of the global warming stupidity, but CNN is treating this like a downed Malaysian airliner, and even NBC is questioning what's going on. Ha! Air Malaysia picked em up gave them a ride home. ;-P

If we're watching them, we can have a drone fire a Hellfire missile up their ass anytime we want. Not only that, but when they're in our custody, we're required by international law to keep them safe. Now that they're no longer in our custody...they're not quite fair game, but it sure is a hell of a lot easier to kill 'em now than it was before. Hope somebody is getting an email with these guys wereabouts... On the marine AiS I use off my phone, I have a "fleet" of vessels I get updates on. One just read: "Leaving Indiana Harbor", next one: "Entering South Chicago." It is getting quite annoying considering I am home. Hopefully somebody is getting an email that is saying: "Achmed the Terrorist has just entered the Alibaba Hardware in Kabul... Achmed has just swiped his card to buy a ton of fertilizer... Says: "He's planting poppies..." I guess am a racist for joking about this! :-O
Doc
How cool would this be? What is if they they stuck electroinc chips in the 5 Taliban... Now they are tracking them all over the place. LoL... This would make for great sci-fi! Great idea.

You get the royalties Doc! :-) I believe that portions of the liberal media are looking at their ratings, their profits or losses and the polls and stubbornly coming to the conclusion that they will have to start being critical of this administration. Wrong. When was the last time liberals made good business sense? Answer: Never.
IDBillzFan
Rut-roh... A senior official confirms to Fox News that the conduct of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl -- both in his final stretch of active duty in Afghanistan and then, too, during his time when he lived among the Taliban -- has been thoroughly investigated by the U.S. intelligence community and is the subject of "a major classified file." In conveying as much, the Defense Department source confirmed to Fox News that many within the intelligence community harbor serious outstanding concerns not only that Bergdahl may have been a deserter but that he may have been an active collaborator with the enemy. What say we crack open that file and have a little look-see, shall we?
Dante
Thank God this vet was released. For a minute there I was afraid we were going to have to keep talking about the ones who keep committing suicide because the VA has been delaying their visits. A nice distraction for sure. How convenient. But Obama can't even pull this off correctly apparently since it's coming out the guy is actually a deserter. A criminal in his own right. I mean, to phuck things up as regularly as he does you would almost think it's deliberate. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist but you really don't have to stretch that much. DC Tom
Rut-roh... [/background] What say we crack open that file and have a little look-see, shall we? That file most likely should (and will) stay closed. It doubtlessly contains a lot of information about intelligence gathering means and our knowledge of the Taliban's structure. So the administration gets him back, spikes the ball and does the touchdown dance because they freed the last POW, and...wait a minute, flag on the play. You just traded five terrorists for a guy who very well may be a deserter, subject to court martial. How are you not prepared for this beforehand? How do you not think this through? How do you keep repeating the same idiotic behavior over and over?
ExiledInIllinois
Let's reboot this topic. Why does it bother people, even if he is a deserter? Isn't it even better that we are getting a deserter back... He deserted once, who's to say can't do it again. Gather valuable intel... Then there is the valuable info that is gained by sending the others back People and the media keep barking up a storm on this issue and it might screw up the long term goals. Use it for what its worth and stop being so simple. Who really cares, use it for whats its worth in this chess match.

I saw something on Twitter this morning to the effect of "Trading 5 Taliban guys for 1 Taliban guy seems four Taliban guys short of making sense." Pretty much. History will ultimately show that what we're watching is the actions of a man more interested in his own self than he will ever be interested in the welfare of our country. He has proven to be willing to blatantly and intentionally lie to the entire world simply to do things he thinks will help us like him. He screwed up being the first black president. He screwed up Obamacare. He screwed up the economy. He completed screwed minorities and young voters. Right now he's basically doing whatever he can so he'll at least retain his DailyKos login credentials.

This guy could be the love child of Sgt. York and Audie Murhpy, with John Basilone as his godfather, and it wouldn't change my position one bit: telling the Taliban that we'll trade Gitmo detainees, five for one, for American POWs is a ridiculously short-sighted policy on multiple different levels. It's going to start to matter to the administration, though, if it turns out that this guy really was a deserter. They can't stand to lose face. And oh yeah, their military presence is decreasing every year. Wouldn't wanna draw straws on being one of the 1000 left before we pull out.
