Hail Flutie Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 2 billion for the Dodgers, now 2 Billion for the Clippers. If that's what a baseball and basketball team go for these days, what's that say about what the Bills will sell for?
kasper13 Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 2 billion for the Clippers is just pure insanity. Forbes lists the Knicks at #1 in the NBA and valued at 1.4 biliion. The Lakers #2 at 1.35 billion. The Clippers were valued at 575 million. Why would someone pay almost 4x the value and half a billion more than the top valued team? Forbes has the Bills at #30 in the NFL at 870 mil. Imagine if someone pays 4x the value for the Bills? 3.5 billion?
Mr. ChumChums Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Trump might not be rich enough for the Bills, without some serious help. His NW is "only" ~$4B, and most of it is tied up in real estate.
Kirby Jackson Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 The Bills will be in the low billions ($1.25B has been my guess). Anyone that thinks $800M in my opinion is crazy. The Clippers get zero suite revenue and have a horrible deal with the Staples Center. These values are out of control. The NBA team that I worked for sold in 2012 for $328M. Since then we have seen Milwaukee and Sacramento sell for over $500M. The people that bought New Orleans (where I was) and Philadelphia must be pooping champagne today. The got in for under $330M just two years ago and today could flip those franchises for a $200M profit. Crazy, crazy stuff going on in the NBA right now.
SF Bills Fan Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 The scary thing is, there could be a guy like Ballmer that is willing to way over bid for the Bills and not be worried about the 400 million buy out or a new stadium. They can justify it by reasoning that an NFL team in LA will be a 2 billion value in less than a decade. I think it unlikely, but this type of move makes one think. This talk of Sergei Brin may not be too far fetched.
NDBUFFCUSEFAN Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 This was a perfect situation for a Clippers sale, they are by far the best team in LA and the Lakers are looking like a hot mess, new NBA deal is coming and is rumored to be Olympic/World Cup size financially, they have two young superstars locked up and the cap is rising which will allow for them to add a third star. This is the definition of hitting at the perfect time.
Max997 Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 That's just insane, no way can that be right I can't see anyone paying even half that for a team with an arena included much
papazoid Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 2 billion for the Dodgers, now 2 Billion for the Clippers. If that's what a baseball and basketball team go for these days, what's that say about what the Bills will sell for? says $2 Billion to me.....
billsfan89 Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 (edited) The Clippers price is highly inflated. The Bucks sold for way less so the range for teams is somewhere between 550 million and 2+ billion. The Bills are a low tier NFL team value wise. I don't think they will be a 2 billion dollar team like if the Giants or Cowboys got sold. The Bills will sell in the range of 1-1.5 billion depending on how many bidders get involved. The Clippers pretty much got sold at the right time, the team is really good, the NBA is doing well and about to come up on a new TV deal, the Lakers are in a down turn, and there were a lot of bidders. NDBUFFCUSEFAN Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Yup comparing two teams in the 2nd largest market that both have giant TV deals tied in makes it comparable to Buffalos situation.
papazoid Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 If an NBA franchise can be worth $2 billion, what could an NFL team go for? Surely, the Los Angeles location factored into the price. And that could prompt someone who owns or who wants to buy an NFL team to suddenly get serious about moving to L.A. If baseball and basketball teams playing there are worth more than $2 billion, what would an NFL team in L.A. be worth? Three billion? Four billion? More? Buffalo fans hopes that the estate of Ralph Wilson doesn’t find out. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/05/29/clippers-sale-raises-stakes-for-nfl-teams/
Fingon Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 If you're paying $2 billion for a sports franchise it's absolutely NOT about the money. If the Bills were sold for $2 Billion that would virtually guarantee the team stays in Buffalo simply because the owner will have to be so rich that he doesn't care about losing money.

In reality, teams are worth what someone is willing to pay for them.
K D Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 The Bills will be sold for well into the Billions. The NFL is the hottest thing going right now. It's a great investment imo. Trump will try and lowball and get quickly outbid. He's made it pretty clear that he would buy them "at the right price" (looking for a bargain) but if the bidding gets out of control he will drop out. I don't think he has a chance. He's a clown, he just wants the publicity
YoloinOhio Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Any speculation that Ballmer might move the team to Seattle? I know they've been trying to get a team back.

It's an enormous difference.
voodoo poonani Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 The sale price and what a team is "worth" are rarely if ever the same thing.
stony Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Baseball and basketball teams can sell local TV and NFL teams cannot. It's an enormous difference. Not to mention there is a gigantic overseas streaming deal about to be closed for the NBA. No concrete numbers yet, but Cuban has suggested the recent sales (Bucks) and future sales would all take tho into account. NBA kicks butt globally, the NFL is only king in the US.
