Kellyto83TD Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 We have seen the last couple years the curve in NFL offenses is to finally go back to running the ball more and playing great defense. Granted we lost a talented Safety that wanted way too much money, but overall I think the D has improved. I am a big believer in JS as our DC. Like Wade phillips some folks are meant to be coordinators and JS is one of them, BUT he bring HC Exp that Marrone can call upon. Kiko to OLB and spikes in the middle immediately helps. JS's Defenses can stop the run, and that has been our #1 issue the last few years esp. Last year. Offense: We made it clear, we want big, strong, athletic linemen and we added 4 of them through FA and the draft. LT And Center are set, I believe we found both guards and RT This offseason AND Depth as well. We brought in TWO RBs' both of which are bigger and can pound the rock. Brown can flat book as well. I have a feeling we are going to see a combo of the Saints passing scheme with a lot more running like SF/Seattle do. For once we will be with the upswing of the curve instead of a few years behind it.
Green Lightning Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 I just hope we run more from the spread like Chan used to do, particularly on short yardage situations. I screamed every time Hackett would send Freddie or CJ into a pile for no gain. I agree that SW will greatly diversify our passing game and an improved O line will factor in hugely. It seems to work on paper at least.....

FluffHead Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 who are you and what have you done with Kellyto83TD??? He drank that draft day kool aid. It happens to the best (worst) of them.
mrags Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 He drank that draft day kool aid. It happens to the best (worst) of them. i agree with everything this imposter said in the OP. Really wanted Hyde because as the OP stated, the pass happy fad may be coming to a close, and the power run, stop the run teams will be up and coming. The league has went with smaller, quicker, more athletic LBs to account for heavy passing games and quick fast TEs. Now teams are going with big physical TEs again and a more bruising running game. Lynch, Peterson, Morris, Lacy, Blount, etc... The offenses can dictate to the defenses by overpowering them with run games now days. I firmly believe that Brown and Dixon will be the future running backs of this team. CJ won't be here after this season and Freddy won't be long before he's retired. Brown will be the starter by seasons end. Bank it.
Mr. WEO Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 I don't see the NFL moving away from a primarily passing league because a few teams have solid D's, strong running games and modest passing abilities. Half of the top 6 rushing teams last year struggled to score points. And Seattle didn't destroy Denver in the SB by stopping the Bronco's 15th ranked running game...

Agree, as long as the rules stay the way they are and refs call PI on the slightest contact it will always be a passing. Passing is more exciting which means higher ratings which mean more TV money.
clearwater cadet Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 I think playing in buffalo, and having to play in the AFC east with the Pats and Jets, you are likely to play 8 to10 games a year in poor weather. So a big physical line that can run the ball and stop the run only improves your chances.

thronethinker Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 This team is EJ away from success or failure. He made some poor decisions last season that lead to injury. Hopefully his decision making has improved.
The Wiz Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 (edited) I think Buffalo is catching up to the curve and helping to defining a new one at the same time. They doubled-down on EJ and drafted an amazing receiver (catching up to the curve). At the same time, they grabbed some big bodies to help out with pass protection and likely getting FJ/CJ room to run. With the amount that we ran last year (albeit because we had a rookie QB, 2nd and 3rd string QB playing) they are looking to make it a more balanced offense of run and pass plays. We've seen teams heavily favor the run (Bills, Vikings) and other that are balancing run/pass (Chiefs, Saints). The interesting stat to point out is the teams that are heavy on the pass and are successful with it, don't need to rely on the run but the teams that run a lot also pass a lot. There is no run heavy team that doesn't need to rely on the passing game. Common sense I know but the scale does tend to tip in favor of a pass happy team. The best example I can offer is the Chiefs. They were set at the running game 2 years ago but had Matt Cassel at QB. In comes Alex Smith in 2013 and the team went from 2-14 to 11-5. I know 2012 was a woeful year for the Chiefs with injuries to key players but it helps me prove my point so I'm sticking to it. Edited May 19, 2014 by The Wiz
