It's the beginning of May and it just occurred to me that there have been almost no stories about Nathanial Hackett or Jeff Tuel since the end of the season. I've heard a lot about the new QB coach, EJ's off-season practices and seeking advice, lots of talk around here about getting another QB, or the absolute need for a "#1 WR" of TE. Coach Marrone has weighed in, as has Doug Whaley. Yet nothing about -- or from -- the guy who supposedly is in charge of the offense. Once I started thinking about this silence, I thought it was odd.

And Tuel...Last year he had many of us around here excited to the point were some were actually envisioning him becoming the starter. Then he had his well-reported problems on the field and since then he too seems to have disappeared from Bills news and discussions. And we're having more talks about bringing in another back-up QB, maybe drafting one, etc. as though Tuel didn't even exist. Personally, I'd like to believe that the guy we saw last summer and early in the season is the "real" Tuel, and that he's used his time in the barrel to greatly improve himself and will have become the guy who got us excited last year.

I'm not saying that the silence from, and about, these two guys suggests anything nefarious, just that it's kind of odd.

I don't think it is odd at all. Bills fans have been kind of distracted by the death of an owner and one of our icons battling health issues. If you aren't in jail, fighting cancer, or causing a scene at the airport, you aren't getting any airtime.

You want an offseason story about our OC and third string QB?

Why not a story on the tight end coach's golf game and what John Murphy hits up first in the buffet line while were at it?

Hopefully we draft a QB in the sixth round to beat Tuel out so we don't have to think about him ever again.

Hackett in my mind gets a pass from last year. No one should have to deal with what he did. This year, however, there should be no excuses. He has to get his playmakers the ball and put all of his varied weapons in positions to succeed.

Sounds like a perfect Schopp & Bulldog show itinerary.

personally, i'd like to believe tuel is the love child of joe montana, tom brady and just a dash of randall cunningham.

never be deceived by what you would like to believe.

I love Tuel. I think of all 3 of our QBs, Tuel has the best understanding of his job AND willingness to do it at the same time.

His job is to throw the ball. To give playmakers a chance to make plays. It is NOT to wait for guys to get open. It is not to stare down receivers.

Tuel reminds me of Nick Foles, with maybe a stronger arm.

I said "reminds me." Not "is."

Its that gunslinger mentality. Its the excitement that be brings to the offensive players. The idea that "at least this QB will give me a chance to make a play."

agreed. his performance in the cleveland and k.c. games speaks for itself.

But for the rook pick he threw in the end zone, Tuel looked pretty good in his one start. The Bills have gone to considerable lengths to protect him. I look forward to seeing what year two looks like from him. That said, don't need to read off season stories about him.
