All right, sources have reported back, and this happens next Thursday.

Makes sense. Buddy Nix loved his own draft picks and didn't really like to trade. Last year was the first year that Whaley had the controls and the trade they did make worked out great for them, regardless of what you think about EJ. They got their man they wanted and then with the extra pick they got Kiko. So it probably made Whaley, as well as the people around them, even more confident in their abilities as talent evaluators. Throw in guys like Nickell Robey, who they started calling in round five saying they were interested in him and then convinced him to sign as an UDFA who made a serious impact, and these guys think they know what they are doing.

They had a strong first draft. The trade Whaley made for Jerry Hughes was highway robbery. And just because they were successful with a trade down last year doesn't necessarily mean they are better off doing that. To them, I would imagine, it doesn't mean they know how to trade down, it means they know how to evaluate players, which would be the same in up or down trades.

Not saying that I believe Whaley and his team are great. They had one good year and need to prove it again and again. I just think that they have a lot of confidence in themselves right now to make good trades, and it's more likely than not I think that they do it again at some point in this draft.

Great post - let me add a twist - they not only feel they are good at evaluating players, but also, that they are good at knowing how their fellow teams evaluate players. That is really the art - knowing where guys will go (and where they should go based upon value). Nix was comically bad at that: see TJ Graham, Torrell Toupe, etc. Whaley seems to be much better at predicting how the draft will go.

Really interesting thoughts from both you and Kelly. I think that it is as important to know what those around you want as to what you want. That is how value is obtained. Really good stuff guys!

It helps me to remember that our coach played offensive line and coached offensive line. My sources tell me that we are trading up for Mack because that is the name of our head coach's son. Remember that you heard it hear first.

Or as an old O lineman he knows WR's are not something you give the farm away for.

Good observation.

With a day to go, I am starting to see reporting from Rapaport reporting something close to this...I hear this is still on the table, but they are engaging the Rams and Raiders as well. Final guess tomorrow...

So, when you said "this happens next Thursday" what exactly did you mean?

Of course it is a guess...while I might have resources, I am not in the employ of the beloved Bills. I am still holding the line on what was reported to me - the Bills are trading their 1st and potentially 2nd plus Stevie J to move into the top 4...

Huges is marginal as a 4-3 DE...failed in that role in Indy.

Of course it is a guess...

I think his implication is that you're backing off substantially from this:

If Sammy Watkins is there at 4, the Bills will trade their 1st, 2nd and Stevie Johnson to Cleveland for the rights to take Sammy Watkins. Something could change, but as of today, this is on the table...Not sure this makes us better, but they see something in Sammy and envision a long term relationship with EJ and him.

If Sammy is not there, they are more than happy with Matthews or Ebron at 9.

when you say "the Bills are trading their 1st and potentially 2nd plus Stevie J to move into the top 4..."

Let's call it an educated guess than. You do understand the draft is a very fluid event - even while it is happening, there are "Holy Sh-t" moments in a war room where the best of laid plans go up in smoke due to someone taking your guy(s) 15 spots too soon...

Of course...I never doubted that you heard what you said; I only said that I heard a different move was on the table. I usually try to refrain from making cast-in-concrete statements like the one you made, because, as you said, it's a fluid situation. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, just that I've noted the difference in wording and found it somewhat telling IMO.

All is well as far as I'm concerned.

So....serious question

What happens to Jerry Hughes (who had a 10 sack year) if they do in fact trade for Clowney?

He continues in his limited role as a pass rush specialist? Like the giants with osi, tuck, and jpp or seattles group?

Yep...Since when has a team ever said we want less guys who can rush the passer? B-)

So why would the Bills trade Stevie Johnson? Everything they've done so far says otherwise. Marrone called Stevie personally and told him any rumors about being traded or cut were false. Then Marrone brings Stevie and Andre Reed with him to pick up Mike Williams after they trade for him. Those don't sound like things you do if you are trying to get rid of a guy.
