War, What Is It Good For?

Recommended Posts

Interesting op-Ed/book review that can be looked at in so many ways and applied and tested with many wars we have discussed, Civil War, Iraq War, The Nam. I think the anti-statists, or whatever the hell the right wing anti-government people call themselves could take real issue with this thesis, too. But I think he is right. A stronger federal government has reduced crime, violence and disorder. Tommy, not sure if this book is a best seller or not... ;)

RICO laws, fighting political corruption, etc. Ummm...were the Feds involved in that gun running arrest out there in California you were yammering on about a couple weeks ago?

And did you ever look at the difference between our side of Niagara Falls and the Canadian side? Until the Feds came in and busted the rackets there it cost like 75% more to simply build on our side because of organized crime, and thanks to the Feds they crushed that.

If you're saying a strong federal government has reduced violent crime you can add that to the list of things they totally fail at. Your beloved federal government pretty much sucks so many things. I can't understand why you, and others like you, back the government so much.

EDIT: And before you B word about the source here is it again on the PBS website.

Crime increased in a year by year survey and that proves what? Nothing. Crime increased from 1930 to 1932 also, when there was a very weak Federal government

So crime increased when there was a weak federal government and it's increasing with a strong federal government but according to you a strong federal government has reduced crime.

Wow, yes, it's very simple, no matter what the overall level of crime it will fluctuate.

You get that?

Who in their right mind would defend RICO laws?

Do you think Federal Marshall protecting civil rights workers was a good thing?

Edit: I don't like to say some members should ever be banned or removed but Gator is getting worse and worse. He is adding nothing of value to any thread or post except some idiotic dissension which is only done to cause disruption. There are several others here who actually add substance to their beliefs even when igornorant and contribute their values while disagreeing with the populous.

This is not meant to insult Gator, because it is just not worth it. It is, instead, a thank you to those who continue to present an argument against the status quo population of PPP.

Who in their right mind would defend RICO laws?

And that he puts on a hat trying to be a Democrat, Liberal, and a mentally retarded nitwit makes it that much funnier.

RICO laws are as unconstitutional as can be.

In the long run, war makes us safer and richer...as long as it's not being fought on your land.

The article itself, and I imagine the book's actual thesis, is in no way groundbreaking or novel. It's also an incredibly narrow look, and subsequently a narrow investigation, into a very broad topic. Very few people actually advocate for no government.

Really? Japan, almost flattened in WW2 was the second largest economy in the world until it was passed by China, a country that was wor torn for decades in the twentieth century. Let's see if you are capable of responding without your usual two year old like tantrum

So, because Japan bounced back from WW2, that proves without a doubt that war made them stronger?

It's not a tantrum. It's an observation. You are, in fact, an idiot.

Try to guess why. Here's a hint: did Japan and China's prosperity occur during war, or peace?

No, not necessarily, that comment--and the part about China in it you left out--were more to counter Tom's assertion that they were not better off in the long run even though the fighting had happen on their territory. China is obviously a better example because Japan already had a strong centralized state.

For arguing with a Internet Hero like you, maybe I am.

I don't know Tom, tell us so we can understand your thinking?

Question: what is the richest nation in the world and how many wars have been fought on its soil?
