Rubes Posted April 13, 2014 Share Posted April 13, 2014 An old college buddy of mine is going to visit the Canadian side of the falls, and is looking for any ideas for sightseeing (aside from the Falls, I presume) and food. I haven't been to the Falls in probably 25 years, so I have no idea anymore what's over there worth checking out. Any good restaurants and other things to do people know about? billsfanmiami(oh) Posted April 14, 2014 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Couple years ago the wife and I did a long weekend. Stayed at the Sterling Inn & Spa a smaller hotel off the main drag. No view of falls but rooms very nice. Walking distance to Clifton hill and the Fallsview casino. The restaurant in the hotel, AG is the top rated restaurant in the region. We did the tasting menu with wine pairings. Expensive, but one of the best meals I've ever had. We also did a full day wine tour that included a guide, transportation, lunch, and tastings at 4 wineries. Fun trip. Another thing I'd recommend depending on the time of year is the whirlpool jet boat tour. Very cool but we did it in late fall and it was freezing. You get completely soaked. I'd like to do it again in the middle of the summer. Nearby Niagara on the lake has a bunch of shopping and nice restaurants. Pretty short and scenic drive from the falls. Marv's Neighbor Posted April 14, 2014 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Go to Niagara On the Lake. It's at the N end of the river, where it empties into Lake Ontario. Cross into Canada and just follow the river down the Niagara Gorge, heading N. They have many good restaurants and some nice wineries. It's a very pretty drive! If the Jet Boat is running, that's a great ride. it leaves from Niagara On the Lake. I trust it's still there because all the people who live along the river were complaining about the noise, but if it's there, it's worth doing. Certainly the majority of the time is spent in places with long poles coming from the ceiling or green felt tables. So not a ton of recommendations However, last year we went to a new place right across for the Embassy Suites called Copacabana Brazilian Steakhouse. We did not eat eat there, but they have a very cool front bar with the garage style doors that they open on nice weather days. We each had a few drinks at the bar there around 6.30 PM on a Saturday. Lively crowd,nice not to loud live band, very good drinks, nice talent working the bar. Looked decent for food as well. Also, in the Embassy suites the Keg has great views of the Falls. A tour of Fort George on the Canadian side or Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown can be great if you have any interest in the history of WNY. My wife and I went there back in 1999, then again in 2004. We're due to go back soon and the Wild Mushroom is always tops on our list for a cocktail and some food. Getting back is another story, they will read you the riot act in the US. Really, we went across without a hitch. Getting back they asked for passports and we said: "They never asked entering Canada." It was like the old days leaving The States. Boy was the US Customs Agent fit to be tied! What are they gonna do? Not net me back into my own country? We all had ID... LoL... I guess they could have made it VERY miserable by spending "quality time" w/US Customs... LoL Try it... Don't show your passports entering Canada unless asked. They sure want you to spend your money there, who cares getting back, that's not their problem!
