I fully understand the frustration of not appearing to be an aggressive team in FA, but I truly believe this GM has a plan in place. Plus MAYBE half the teams in the NFL have made moves with a majority of the good ones locking up their own talent and the other contenders getting role players/"missing pieces" that WANT to be there. And just because a select few players are signing right away doesn't mean they're going to have an instant impact on the team they signed with, at least not the players most fans wanted to see here. You think Oakland is all of a sudden a better team because they threw buckets of cash at Saffold and Austin? They had a better LT in Veldheer and paid more for an inferior player. Besides there really wasn't anyone that has been signed today that would've made sense on the this roster and instantly made the Bills a better team, except Byrd and possibly Geoff Schwartz. Theres still talented FA guards that can come in and do just as well in the trenches and tackles in the draft that can contribute and do just as well as Austin Howard or any other FA RT thats signed so far. Let's be patient and see what happens throughout the next week or so and see what happens. If we can get some depth on the DL and a LB or two, it'll help free up draft picks for the WR/OL/DB/DE. Im still holding out hope that we can sign a suitable guard OR tackle, but if it doesn't happen tomorrow, it doesn't mean it won't happen period. As always GO Bills!

The thing is, they won't!

I'll have to see it to believe it. This team has been a 20 year odyssey to not build a top O line. There is a direct correlation between so many bad QB's, bad teams, and bad O lines. Despite all the early draft picks spent on DB's, DE's, RB's.

Can you blame him? He went to a perennial playoff contender and I salute him for his desire to play for a top team.

Agreed. Might I add I'd also like to see a true run stuffing NT, short yardage specialist, run down extraordinaire.

I don't blame Byrd for his desire to play for titles. My concern is New Orleans, home of Carcosa & the Yellow King, the city literally sinking into the Mississippi River delta is not the place to do it. Drew Brees has 1-2 good years left.

I think Byrd is fine player but at that contract the money is better spent building our roster. We need to improve our trench warfare units.

Yeah, I too am glad they took the money the would have used on Byrd and signed a quality T and G to start off FA.

Oh wait.

There is no limit to the ridiculousness of the sky is falling gang on this board.

After 14 years of futility I don't think it's the "sky is falling gang" that is ridiculous.

I'll write this one more time: If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got.

Don't you wish you owned a company that made millions for putting a simply awful product on the market year after year?

I agree Pete. But hey, they signed Mike Caussin today. REALLY? Here's a tool that had 6 catches THREE years ago, and didn't play the last two years. Seriously, you can't make up stuff like this. And it's not like he was a high pick. He was an undrafted FA. So, even in a minor signing like this.....you have to scream......WTF? You can't tell me this guy is in any way, shape or form useful to this organization. Again, you can't make this stuff up.

If you can't take it, then stop posting and stop watching the team. Holy Christ. I don't remember much before the Todd Collins era and I still B word less than a lot of people on this board.

I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER WHEN THEY WERE GOOD AND I COMPLAIN LESS THAN MOST PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD. Let that sink in.

Seriously, its like 70% of the content on this board is nothing but a big cry and whine fest about Schopp, Littman, Overdorf, WGR, Sully, ESPN, the schedule, Roger Goodell, the team moving,Ralph, and whatever player is in contract negotiations with the team at any given time. Its a bad look. Suck it up, wait it out, or move along. Whining like a petulant little child on a message board isn't going to move the process along any faster.

By the way, free agency is what you use to plug holes here and there, its not how you build a team. Miami "won" free agency last year, how did that work out for them? The Eagles "won" free agency out of the lockout. They were a real success that year, weren't they?

Here's the dirty little secret. In Buffalo it's 32 and snowy. In New Orleans it's going to be partly cloudy, high of 66, with an 80% chance of playoffs. Is that disparity partly the Bills' own fault? Yes, but not totally. According to Wawrow the Bills made a strong offer but the fact is, we are fans if a team that has a hard time landing free agents. Blame the Bills as much as you want, but it takes two to make a deal.

If you're going to blame the Bills for the shoveling you have to do today, I don't know what to tell you.

Why because we don't usually vastly over pay for a guy who underperforms and then gets cut halfway through the contract? When is the last FA other than a QB that made a huge difference to a team?

Some might say Mario Williams?

But, I get your point. The best use of FA is to get young guys coming off their first contract who are decent, but crowded out of playing time, or don't fit the new system on thier team, or something like that. There's plenty of good value to be had, and big contracts don't necessarily mean value. In fact they do less often than not.

The other reasonable use of FA? Making up for bad drafting. You have to pay more, and by all rights, you should pay more, for making bad draft choices. However, there's nothing wrong with correcting a mistake, provided you aren't using future draft picks to do it. That compounds the mistake.

The worst use: what the Redskins do.

How are we not supposed to bring up the Redskins? We have the single biggest case of FA idiocy in the history of the NFL, but we aren't allowed to reference it? The Redskins behavior should and must be referenced, as often as is necessary, to remind fans of just how dopey FA can be.

Some fans need more reminding than others. While still others need constant supervision.

Remember when the team made the playoffs? Yeah, me either. Letting your pro bowl players leave year after year and signing other teams cast offs is not a good business plan. I'm not saying go on a spending spree, but replace the players who really don't want to be here with some solid free agent replacements. Not some other teams scraps just because they are cheap. It's like groundhogs day year after year on the first day of free agency. Its frustrating.

The only pro bowler that left in the past 2 offseasons was Byrd--and his replacement is already on the roster.

The thing is there really wasn't a good replacement for Byrd out there. Mike Mitchell may have been adequate. But almost all of the "big name" safeties that signed yesterday were SS/in the box types, not FS/center fielder types.

Seahawks in negotiation with Jarred Allen. Seattle is most balanced team in NFL- yet they are aggressive in bringing in players to improve their superbowl team. Where as we finally have a few talented players to build upon- and we cast them off and create more holes. So far our defense is same as last year, minus Byrd- we our much worse already

To me the more amazing story is Denver...A team paying the premium at QB, and pretty stacked with talent all over their Roster, is replacing Rogers-Cromartie with Talib, they signed TJ Ward at S, and they're making a push for DeMarcus Ware...I also saw a report that the minute the Broncos signed Talib they pulled their standing offer to Rogers-Cromartie off the table...In other words...We want you, here's an offer...Oh, you want to test the market? OK...Get me the phone...Let's try to get better at CB...I realize that's a bit easier for the AFC Champs than it is for the stumbling Bills...But still...The Bills could not at least try some tactics? Any tactics? I don't know...

After what we saw NO do for Byrd you have to wonder if the Bills are playing in the same league with these teams...I understand the cap as well as any other arm-chair QB...So I fully realize these teams are taking some chances and trying to win it all now...But goodness...Somehow they do it...And the Bills don't...Simple as that really... B-)

bring it. First round pick- Poz- let them go for nothing. Top lineman Levitre- let them go- and have no replacement plan. First round pick- Lynch- let him go for a 4th and win superbowl. First round pick Whitner- let him go. First round pick Clements- go. ETC. Waste first round picks, then either ignore their replacement, or waste another high draft pick replacing player instead of filling a hole at another position. Its maddening. And next year we have more free agents. I suppose we will let them go for nothing too. It is !@#$ing maddening

As another long suffering Bills fan did anyone really expect anything different? Byrd wanted top money, we only offered 7.5 mil per year for a great player, NO offered right about 9. Glad that Overdorf and Littman still handling the contracts and money. I fully expect our 15th year with no playoffs this season. Somewhere between 4-6 wins sounds about right. Should be fun to see how the front office spins it though.
