johnwalter
I know there are a few threads on Byrd active, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus on whether or not Byrd's contract situation was handled well by Russ, Whaley, & Co (some think it was smart to let him walk, others are outraged) and I was wanted to see how 2BD felt as a group. ALF
Should have extended Byrd while under contract like Wood and A. Williams. If he refused, easy to trade for at least something. Not like we needed him to make the playoffs while he was here.

He's a very good player. But he just got STUPID money from New Orleans. $11 million signing bonus. That's insane. They can have him at that price. FluffHead
Byrd did not want to play here. Very simple It's not buffalo he had a problem with it's the ineptitude of the organization and the handling of his situation is just another exhibit that they don't know how to or don't want to win
boyst
Don't care what he wanted. 2014 was too late to extend. We made what is likely a solid offer. Don't care about anything else but tag him. Tag him, keep the long term deal on the table and leave the room. Tell him we will see him in June, we will fine him whatever possible and he is ours for 2 more years. TheMadCap
Yes, but for last years negotiations, which is when he should have been resigned. Last year is where the Bills should have made their big offer. Yes, I'm bummed he's gone, and I was a very vocal member of the "don't let your young, exceptional talent go if you want to improve crowd". In this case, the FO did what they could in an impossible situation. Once negotiations failed last year, there was no way he was coming back this year... Thinking back over last year's experience, a 4th round pick (or even a third pick for that matter) would not have been worth all of the protracted off the field distractions and related BS--though the players always say they don't begrudge another player for taking care of his business (bad pun not intended) you know this crap has an impact on the club at some level. Rip off the scab (pun intended) and move on. Regardless of any potential compensatory picks.
frogger
A FS that had a hot streak as a rookie, ran a 4.7 forty before he had planter fascilitis in BOTH feet and is about 5'10". I admit I liked Byrd, but what else could they have done. While NO is a better team right now, buffalo has a better future. Moving on from Byrd, he joins the Nate Clements of this world. Overpriced, overhyped ex bills. Good luck Saints fans, remember he also left the pro bowl because of injury.
OCinBuffalo
They drafted 2 safeties last year. Both have upside. Which means: they decided a long time ago, that they weren't going to play Eugene Parker's reindeer games another time. I don't see how they could have done anything differently this year, given that this plan was obviously begun at least 2 years ago, and they are merely completing the endgame. What are we approving/disapproving of here, exactly? Completion of a long term plan, exactly as it was designed, by Buddy Nix? That's what they were supposed to do. I don't really approve, or disapprove, because it's kinda pointless. I voted for approve, just because it made slightly more sense than disapprove. Tim Graham said last night his source says the Bills offer was about $7.5 million annually. Considering the Ward, Whitner, Mitchell, Bethea, etc. contracts....that was fair market value. The Saints then blew that market out of the water with the $9 million average.
auburnbillsbacker
I can understand when a team like the Steelers has to let a good player go, as they have traditionally drafted very well and it is difficult to fit everyone under the cap. I think Seattle will have this problem over the next few years. The Bills have to retain their own players. In my opinion, the franchise tag should have been used. One thing Bill Polian was great at was keeping his own guys. He didn't sign too many free agents from other teams. Yesterday was a bad day for Buffalo. You are GM Buddy Nix of the Bills in January 2013: 1. Your scouts tell you Byrd can be replaced by drafted kids. 2. You don't want to overpay for a FS, because of the position, and it's market, and because you think you're going to need $ elsewhere, and elsewhere's market 3. You know Byrd's agent is wont to play games 4. You know that your team is bad, and having a high-priced FS isn't going to change that 5. You know that the franchise tag causes chaos on the team every time it is used. You decide what? If this was the info/decision making process, I don't see what difference the franchise tag makes. If Buddy decided to keep Byrd, wouldn't that decision have been made in 2012? With a contract extension? And, what if they tried, but Byrd refused it? In all cases: I don't see what choice Whaley had, this year, to do much of anything different than what he did. Should we have paid $9 mil for a FS? No, no, and no. Just like we don't pay $9 million for a G Neither the Steelers or the Colts got to be who they are, by overpaying Gs and FSs.
xsoldier54
Does anyone really believe that Byrd is worth what he got from NO? Good riddance. I would have been pissed off had they given him 6 Years and 54 million. They will get at least two good players for that kind of money.

The Saints will cut better players to keep the best. And they doom themselves. Brees would be wise to force their hand and make himself get paid. Which is a reason I do not like him - another topic I know - but he will renogiate like a coward. Byrd will not go 6 years in NO. He will go 5. If he gets injured at all he will go 4. Maybe 3. !@#$ Byrd. !@#$ Parker. This doesn't hurt but it is bull crap just glad the dude got his money because he won't get all of iteven if he earns it

HansLanda
My POV on this is that it should have never gotten this far with Byrd. OBD should have figured out how to lock him up years ago. "Blame" lies with both parties because players are not loyal. They want to get paid in contract #2. Oh, and just wait until all the threads emerge when he's in the playoffs this year...not because of his play, but because, you know, his team has a top 5 QB. Then again, theyre in the playoffs every year and we havent been there in a decade and a half. Obviously our FO is outclassed in every way. Byrd wanted a chance to play on a winning team and not this abomination of a franchise.
