If free agency worked like this 25 years ago the Bills would have won at LEAST 1 Super Bowl. Can you imagine the vets that would have tried to become the missing piece to put that team over the top?? They would take these discounted TJ Ward type deals.

 

That is a part of the reason that good teams stay good. If you look at someone like Denver or New England they are able to get good veteran players at a good price to plug holes. Do you think that TJ Ward would have signed with the Bills for $6M a year (he took $5.5M from Denver)? I don't.

Funny that you mentioned teams with HoF calibre QBs. The Bills ongoing QB struggles are the beginning and end of their playoff hopes, and it is a major handicap in attracting top talent at a more equitable price. No one knows this more than the players themselves.

On the flip side they also lose guys to teams on super inflated contracts because they have rings or inflated stats.

 

For most ward signings there's also the flacco, or ellerbe, or possibly decker to get back to the broncos.
