So the Bills have approximately 25 million in cap room. Leaving 5 million out for rookies how would you spend your 20 million?

Rules:

1. Lay out the contract (years/money) for ease of the game just divide salary by years.

2. Spend as much as you want however you want (extensions for current players/fa signings)

3. Build the best team possible!

My signings:

1. Austin Howard RT 4 years/ 20 million total - 5 million spent

2. Geoff Schwartz LG 4 year/ 20 million total - 10 million spent

3. Jairus Byrd S 5 years/45 million - 19 million spent (you didn't think I'd let him go did you!)

Posted

1. Strief (RT) - 5 years & $25M ($15M left)

2. Rey (LB) - 2 years & $5M ($12.5M left)

3. Dickson (TE) - 2 years & $5M ($10M left)

4. Schwartz (LG) - 4 years & $20M ($5M left)

5. Extend Dareus - 6 years & $42M

As much as I want and however I want huh? I would sign 20 million UDFA's equally distributed among all positions at $1 each and see how they work out....

Can I sign with the Bills? I used to play soccer and have to be a better punter than Moorman! What a steal I would be!

We actually have $16 million to spend...

"According to NFL Network Buffalo has $16.44M in cap space heading into today (Tuesday). That ranks 15th in the league. For a look at the full list click on pic link below."

This does not factor in Kolb saving or potentially Pears savings. I think that those 2 will open like $4M in cap space (if/when in Kolbs case).

That is a good call. We also have Carpenter & Chandler to factor in....so there goes what about $6 mill; with your 4 in savings leaves us $14 million

In my scenario it's Dickson not Chandler. The K is tricky. Carpenter was great but I could live with Hopkins. Carpenter would depend on what the real free agency number would be. Same goes for the Dareus extension. The money would be allocated in the most cap friendly manner. Edited by Kirby Jackson

I really don't want to see Chandler back as the starter. If he would take a team friendly deal I wouldn't mind him back but I just don't care for him. He is my Stevie Johnson. The hate that others have for Stevie is how I feel about Chandler. He will have a bad drop, he will disappear for long stretches, and then when I am down on him the most he will make a great 3rd down catch. He is maddening to me which is why I want a te in the draft this year.

Playing the 16 million dollar game I would take:

Brandon Spikes 4 years 12 million - 3 million

Schwartz 4 years 20 million - 8 total

Howard 4 years 20 million - 13 total

James Jones (WR-Green Bay, veteran leadership, red zone specialist, all he does is score TD's...at least on my fantasy team) $25 Million/3 years

Brandon Spikes (ILB-Patriots...veteran leadership, grade A !@#$, thumper/run stuffer) $27 Million, 3 years and 50 lbs of raw meat.

Lagarette Blount (RB- Patriots, Blount Force Trauma suffered by Bills last season, dude is a wrecking ball and fast). $12 Mill/3 years

I like the idea of signing Spikes to stuff the run. Knock on him is that he is horrible in coverage, but would be an interesting pairing next to Kiko.

I don't think Spikes will get anywhere near 9 million a year. I would say 5 at the high end. That is of course only my opinion so who knows.

What's the minimum we can spend according to CBA? I think it's more likely we'll spend closer to that number, than the full cap.

What is the point of this post?

I'm genuinely curious. And I prefer to think about these things a bit more realistically. The Bills have to maximize profits, which means they have to walk a line of not spending a whole lot on players, while signing players to sell the fans on. If we have 20mil in cap room, I don't feel we'll spend to that line, but somewhere lower, and I want to keep that in mind when "playing".

Or I could just shut up and apologize for derailing. :)

 I suppose you could! Or you could play along... How much do you think we will spend? How would you spend it?

1. Karlos Dansby - 2 years $16m

2. Rodger Saffold - 5 years $35m

3. Scott Chandler - 3 yrs $2M

4. Maurice Jones Drew - 2 yrs $5m (3 first year and 2 in 2015)

I'm not 100% sure my figures are correct, but I think that the cap this year is $133 million and the target minimum spend is 90%, which would make the number $119-$120 million. Where it gets complicated is that I read that teams need to average 89% or more over the 2013-2016 seasons, so it's not just a 1-year figure. Last year the target was 85% and some teams actually spent less. That will just mean that they have to spend more later. If I have the time to go back and read the CBA again, I'll start a thread on this subject and lay it out for folks in better detail.
