Sure becomes local when they start pulling bases...

We've been through that before. There have been tons of base closures here in CA since I've moved here. Last I checked we survived.

I agree. I was highlighting how the Congressman cry and whine when it comes to their districts, everybody wants to keep a piece of the pie. They all talk the talk, but when it comes to them actually taking a hit, they change thier tune.

Again, I am totally with you on this one.

a representative from the house will always fight to keep bases in their district open, because their loss will mean the loss of jobs & income for many in their disctrict. even the most fiscally conservative house members have to be perceived by their constituents as doing work that's beneficial to those that they represent.

Yep. Exactly.

It's Congressmen's job to represent their districts.

They should do their jobs more often.

Detroit is an interesting case study of town/industry that refused to see the forest though the trees. Monlithic, competitively lazy compaines often get their clocks cleaned when their industries change and they no longer can pump out average products and still rake in generous profits. Detroit to me is failing because of the insistence that it will "come back", and they are stuck on a permanent competitive hangover. Unions are simply the ironic icing in the cake- they at one point helped workers and improved their lives, but when GM faced fierce competition, they screwed the worker through excessive demands and making management unable to adapt (even if they had a clue).

As far as the City, when you have a gigantic industry that dominates a market and the tax revenues come pouring in, why not make big promises, right? Until the tax revenues are no longer pooring in. It sucks but it appears pensioners will have to take some kicks in the nuts to balance out those long-term obligation, or else Detroit will conitnue to be a place inhospitable to business and residential living.

Detroit is a blessing to this country, yet the media fails present it that way. These lessons learned, should at least, be some of the most valuable with regards to pensions, government excess, unions, etc... California, NYS and Illinois should be paying attention, close attention, because the time will come for them as well if they don't shape up.

For a grossly crowded and overpopulated state like California I suppose shutting down a military base is like the local tastey freeze closing. In many areas they are the life blood. Not every one can get a IT job Gene's opinion notwithstanding.

Yep! And that they will do.

I agree. But there are only so many places to go in this country before you run out of areas. Last man standing. Too bad for places like Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit. The last two dogs standing along the Great Lakes will be Toronto & Chicago. Everybody can't fail. Yeah, that is a bit arrogant of me... We will see what happens.

Do you think the whole world revolves around great lakes shipping? I know it's your job but give it break.

Meaning what? We should ignore the lessons about government excess, labor union greed and boardroom arrogance?

Don't encourage him to talk about other things. It's bad enough when he discusses topics he actually knows something about.

No not all. They are still learning from the mistakes made. It is just cities like Buffalo, Detroit, Cleveland can't absorb their mistakes as much as Toronto & Chicago.

Great Lakes shipping is not my job. My job is inland shipping. Anyway, it is Toronto's lifeline to the world of waterbourne commerce... Same with Montreal.

It seems to me like most are still resisting the need to learn from the mistakes. Or have they scrapped the defined benefit system in Detroit and elsewhere? I suppose that's because the people still in charge are the ones who made the mistakes in the first place.

Why is it "bad enough?"

Because you may actually agree with me?

;-P

Believe me, places are learning from the mistakes. Just the drop off is steeper in some places than others.

Again, everybody can't fail. What you are seeing are bigger losers and bigger winners. God willing, I will be here in 10 years... We shall see...

A better interpretation of my post would be do you ever shut up???

No.

No, because you're barely coherent when you do know what you're talking about. When you don't know what you're talking about, watching you try to put together a coherent thought is downright painful.

So says DCTom and his merry band of misfits. Your pain has always been a part of my equation, it is a job well done! :-P
