John from Riverside
Is anyone going to point out that he was the HC and not the DC with the Lions? Anyone? You have to look back to the last time Schwartz was a DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

The Big Cat
and whenever you question that people immediately say "well he was under a defensive head coach so we dont know if it was his" Yeah but that argument fits. Detroit defense was bad. He was the head coach, it was his. Tennessee defense was good. He wasn't the head coach, it wasn't his.

The Big Cat
Are we not talking about the same situation as Pettine? We would if Marrone were a "defense" guy. Look, I'm just playing devil's advocate. I thought Pettine made a mistake going to a toxic situation in Cleveland, and the events of this week have born that out. Meanwhile, we had an opportunity to replace him with an up-and-comer or a guy with experience and we opted for the safer, historically more successful bet. Having a former HC on your staff is hardly a bad thing (PITT now has four (yup)). Schwartz, in my opinion today, without having seen a single play the defense will run, knowing nothing (like everyone, believe it or not) about the scheme he'll run, was an exceptionally better hire than any boogey man, unproven commodity the Bills supposedly should have targeted. Because there can be no argument against Schwartz without an argument for someone else. And so far nobody has presented somebody that I'd agree should have been considered. He wasn't the head coach, it wasn't his. the follow up to johns pointing at tennessee --- id argue the tennessee defense wasnt all that different. he was there 8 years and 6 of them were not highly ranked and 1 of the two good ones went from tops in the league to collapsing down the stretch when haynesworth was hurt (his 2 contract years being the two top years schwartz has had).... and then it becomes well it wasnt his defense, look what he did with the lions..... well turns out it wasnt quite what a lot of people think based on reputation.... rinse and repeat. hes an asset to our staff, and not an awful choice, especially given when we got him, but im not sure most peoples expectations match his history. ill take him on the staff, for sure, and hope he exceeds his past and adds to the team in a variety of ways (experience, analytic thought as two examples) Edited February 14, 2014 by NoSaint

He wasn't the head coach, it wasn't his. I think it was more their secondary was bad. We have a lot better pieces in our secondary. Also by that criteria, Bill Beliichick sucks as a defensive coach for the last 5 years because the Pats* have had bad defenses. I agree Schwartz has a big hand in the defense since that's his background. But he is supposed to be overseeing everything. So his total focus isn't just defense, like he will be here. thewildrabbit
Is anyone going to point out that he was the HC and not the DC with the Lions? Anyone? You have to look back to the last time Schwartz was a DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR and when you do just that you will see that as long as he had a fierce pass rusher in DE Jevon Kearse, his defensive schemes were solid. Without him they sucked. The Bills have more then one good edge pass rusher now, in Super Mario, Jerry Hughes. So not to worry...unless he starts in with that "wide-nine' poop! jumbalaya
All we need are two Shane Nelson clones at LB. I believe that Shane Nelson was our best run stuffing LB ever until injury shortened his career. He was an absolute stud.

It could be argued that the Bills have (on paper) one of the most talented Ds in the entire league. Our entire roster is 1st and 2nd rounders. IMO, if the Bills aren't a top 10 D (barring any major injuries), JS is a failure.
San-O
I'm more worried about kick coverage and EJ staying healthy than Schwartz Ae of right now, the Bills appear to be going into next season with the same ST coach and same QBs. I hope this changes, however being the 2nd year of this iteration of the rebuild, maybe not? I really think they need to draft a QB in the 1st three rounds. And what if it works? and what if pigs fly...and what if I win the lottery....and what if i get a date with January Jones....and what if.. So far it hasn't worked in Detroit or Philly, and I know why. Its kinda stupid for a defense to spread itself out on its own.

TPS
The Bills need at least one more stud LB and the defense will be good. And I pray that Gilmore looks better in season 3. Doc, these guys seem to think Gilmore won't be a worry, in fact just the opposite.
