Meanwhile in Cleveland

BRAWNDO

The critics of Lombardi and Banner who claim they're incompetent have no freaking idea what they're talking about. Lombardi helped build the Raiders into a Super Bowl contender under Gruden, and was in Cleveland for many good years beginning in 1987. Banner helped make Philly a perennial contender for over a decade and wasn't even there for the one bad year (2012).

Maybe, just maybe, the owner of the Browns is an utter disaster (not to mention potential jailbird-in-waiting).

At the end of the day, getting rid of Lombardi and Banner is a good thing. But it was all done backwards.

Why? What makes you think that the person who made the decision (Haslam) is wiser than the two people he fired?

They are awful. No one wants to work for Banner and no one else wanted to hire Lombardi. Does not make Haslam wise (he hired them, and is to blame for that) but they needed to go.

Why is Banner awful? Between 2000 and 2011, the Eagles had no losing seasons. He effectively ran the club.

Lombardi handled personnel for the Raiders, which was not an easy job given the crazy owner. He arrived in 1998. In 1997, they went 4-12. Afterward:

1998 - 8-8

1999 - 8-8

2000 - 12-4 (AFC championship game)

2001 - 10-6 (should have gotten to the AFC championship game if not for the tuck rule)

2002 - 11-5 (Super Bowl)

It went downhill after that, but there were a lot of reasons for this.

He also became the head of personnel for the Browns in 1992 and worked with Belichik . Within two years, they were 11-5. The next year, everything fell apart because of the announcement of the move, but that was hardly the fault of Lombardi.

If Al Davis were still alive you could ask him how he feels about Lombardi giving up Randy Moss for a 4th to Lombardi's old Patriots buddy Bill Bill-i-cheat. :w00t:

This happened in 2007, and that was the last time he was a GM.

Just when I thought the Pettine hiring had the Browns turning the corner, this happens. Gotta feel sorry for Pettine at this point. It must be rather strange to have the person who hired you last month gets the pink slip after really doing nothing bad over the last month.

Because no one wants to work for him.. he refuses to give up any ounce of control over anything personnel related to the GM or HC. You can't build a winner from where the Browns are/were without being able to hire a good GM or coach.

not really fair. I think it was writing on the wall that Moss needed out of Oakland. He event on to succeed. because of a new environment and a Brady.

Moss should have garnered more then a 4th but i do not think many teams wanted him

@RapSheet

Oh. Jimmy Haslam won’t say if any head coach told him he wouldn’t accept the job if Banner or Lombardi was employed. That sticks out.

@MaryKayCabot

#Browns new GM Ray Farmer will address the media next. Haslam said he didn't promise Farmer the GM job to get him to turn down Miami job.

But you could ask him about Lombardi drafting Jamarcus Russell over Megatron and AP Edited by YoloinOhio

When I suggested that Pettine might come to regret taking this job, I was greeted with replies that anybody should want the job and that you don't turn down an NFL HC position. Pettine is going to be put to the test here. It's hard enough to run a football team. It is harder to report to several different competing bosses, especially when they have proven themselves to be whimsical.

Does anyone really think that Al Davis wasn't pulling the strings at that point? If you don't think Davis wasn't the brains behind the Russell pick, you'd be wrong.

Good call, in retrospect.

When I look at Banner, I look at the scoreboard - 12 straight non-losing seasons prior to arriving in Cleveland.

Sorry, but just your saying "they are awful" does not cut it. They were there for exactly one year. What moves that they made in that one year convince you that they are/were awful? They fleeced the Colts in the Trent Richardson trade, they made a pretty good first round pick with Barkevious Mingo, they had found a pretty good QB in Hoyer, until he went down, developed Gordon into the best WR in the league and overall, I thought they had a more talented roster than the Bills last year. Maybe Chud was not a great hire, but you could argue that Haslam pulled the plug too early on him, too. I see no evidence that Haslam is not the real problem with the Browns. (Sorry for the double-negative.)

See above... no one has wanted to work for them, it has played out twice already over the last two searches in the one year. Haslam is to blame as well. Of course he is part of the problem. But just like in the Big-D, he isn't firing himself. I'm sorry, but you won't find any Browns fans upset that 2 of the stooges are gone. They are just upset it took so long.
