Lombardi helped build the Raiders into a Super Bowl contender under Gruden, and was in Cleveland for many good years beginning in 1987. Banner helped make Philly a perennial contender for over a decade and wasn't even there for the one bad year (2012). He also became the head of personnel for the Browns in 1992 and worked with Belichik . Within two years, they were 11-5. The next year, everything fell apart because of the announcement of the move, but that was hardly the fault of Lombardi. It must be rather strange to have the person who hired you last month gets the pink slip after really doing nothing bad over the last month. Jimmy Haslam won’t say if any head coach told him he wouldn’t accept the job if Banner or Lombardi was employed. That sticks out. @MaryKayCabot #Browns new GM Ray Farmer will address the media next. Pettine is going to be put to the test here. It's hard enough to run a football team. They were there for exactly one year. What moves that they made in that one year convince you that they are/were awful? They fleeced the Colts in the Trent Richardson trade, they made a pretty good first round pick with Barkevious Mingo, they had found a pretty good QB in Hoyer, until he went down, developed Gordon into the best WR in the league and overall, I thought they had a more talented roster than the Bills last year. Maybe Chud was not a great hire, but you could argue that Haslam pulled the plug too early on him, too. I see no evidence that Haslam is not the real problem with the Browns.
