DrDawkinstein Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 What you're seeing is people sitting around waiting for the government instead of 'jumping in' to do what needs doing. That is the responsibility of everyone, not just the government. And it sounds like there's a significant government effort happening to respond to a very unique set of circumstances that created the problem. Just because something bad happens doesn't automatically mean the all-mighty government did anything wrong or has the power to snap its fingers and make all the problems disappear. Was there not a forecast? Do people in Atlanta not know that snow creates a big problem? To again address this statement... http://www.accessatlanta.com/weblogs/buzz/2014/jan/29/our-13-hour-ride-home/ A guy marching up the middle of 285 wearing University of Michigan pajama bottoms and shouting commands at about 7 this morning was the only authority figure I encountered in our 13-hour commute home last night/this morning. "COBB PARKWAY! TAKE COBB PARKWAY!" he bellowed. We obeyed and it finally got us home safely. Thanks, Michigan Man. Thanks for nothing, everyone else whose job it is to deal with traffic and weather calamities.
ExiledInIllinois Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Year's ago, there was a storm in Philly and somebody was b***ching how the plows didn't come down the street... I guess it was too narrow with all the cars on each side... Here she is, on TV interview, in a robe talking at her front door, bellyaching about no plows! A foot on the ground and she is NOT suited up w/a shovel in her hands w/the other neighbors? Take one car out onto the cleared cross street and the others in line will follow! WTF... Mobilize people and help the city out! Go the extra mile. I always clear the sidewalks and curbs/drains/fire hydrant two houses down! It is your civic responsibility! And if you don't want to do it, better have an excuse that you are old and your cardiologist said no way! I got no problem with that! I just dug out the new neighbor on Monday morning. While I was shoveling, I seen her raise here garage door, take one look @ the 3 foot high plowline @ the approach to her driveway and then promptly lower her door. She is older, so I cut her some slack and did it for her! AND always will when I can! I promised not to rant, did I? ;-) To again address this statement... http://www.accessatlanta.com/weblogs/buzz/2014/jan/29/our-13-hour-ride-home/ Fugging A right! Need more carpetbaggers down there leading the sheep! AND, while you are walking, I wanna see the blade of the shovel touching pavement! "While you are rambling, you can do some work for me!" ;-P All the salt in the world wouldnt have prevented the traffic issues yesterday. Which does bring us back to (in a roundabout way) TSPLOST. Honestly, it would have helped. Temps were above 20, salt would have worked amazingly. Sure traffic would have been snarled, sure there would/have been spinouts and fender benders... Yet, it would have eased the problems with people getting stuck and then leaving their vehicles and walking!
The Poojer Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 this picture shows just how bad it really is down there...it's no joke

Remember one thing: Bumbles bounce! :-) It would have helped, in that the commutes would have been 6 hours instead of 10, but it would not have prevented it. Exactly and streets would be clear and no abandoned cars. I have no problem w/10 hours... That will happened everywhere w/that mass of people. The thing that is un-nerving is your shot of that street all covered in ice. Next time I am in these areas, I keeping those new fangled tire chain nets in my vehicle! ;-)

Notice the two cars, blue and red off in the distance in the middle of the field... Parked nicely and out of the way. Everyboy else all over the place! LoL... They must be northerners realizing that salters will have to get through and not to block things up! ;-) Good story Chick-fil-A feeds stranded drivers http://www.myfoxny.c...tranded-drivers Yeah, but now that you ate the free food, one has to promise not to be gay! boyst Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Ya know. Its funny. When it snows here I use my tractor to clear snow out at the T intersection of my house and scrape the road approaching the stop sign. I get a few driveways, usually too. I've been told if caught doing this I would be given a ticket and fine. But I still do it. Maybe Atlanta needs to get off their ass and do the same. And when consequences come. Well its easy to deal with those in a revolt of some manner.

You are not supposed to push the snow into the street. Only the plow can push it towards you! ;-) The driver here "knows" me... I give him the stink eye when I see him coming, he flips the blade the other way! LoL... There has been times he waited... I can wait him out his whole shift! Others in the hood might run for warmth, lol...NOT I! :-) Edited January 29, 2014 by ExiledInIllinois
Guffalo Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I sent that to our Atlanta headquarters, I'm sure I will be terminated by the EOD

Jauronimo Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I sent that to our Atlanta headquarters, I'm sure I will be terminated by the EOD Atlanta HQ was overrun by the walking cold. Your former business is now just ruins infested with the unwarm. There's no one in charge anymore.
ExiledInIllinois Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 impeding traffic. Operation of agticultural machine in blablabor something like that and for destruction of the road. Twat I was told You use off-road diesel? The bucket on the tractor may not be the best thing. Sounds kinda stupid that they would give you a ticket! God giveth, God taketh... I am sure people aren't gonna starve after a few days (let alone hours) without some food. Back in the 1994 I made the trip from Champaign to the South Chicagoland area, it normally took 2 hours @ most. I was stuck on I-57 for 14 hours in a blizzard. The roads north were all shut down because the state police couldn't FIND them... So we waited... I am sure if people don't get some fast food for a while they will not die. Come on, it is a 1" storm in the Deep South.

Kevbeau Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) So on top of not being able to drive in an inch of snow, these people don't have Google Maps either?!? I'm surprised Cobb Pkwy was easy-peasy as described. It's a major secondary artery and is quite hilly. Usually packed in a normal rush hour, although seems they didn't get to it until this a.m. I was using Google MAps last night and it was basically useless. Most roads were solid red and some roads they showed clear were packed. Edited January 29, 2014 by Kevbeau

ExiledInIllinois Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 For people living in these areas where the gov't/road crews will leave you to fend for yourself... Why not just carry a set of these in each vehicle? http://www.amazon.co...sl_8k44a02yeh_b There are so many cheap designs and easy to put on... Especially for the brutal ice, wouldn't they come in handy? At least stop the sliding. 60 bucks in each trunk isn't gonna break the bank.
