Key criteria for finding your next franchise QB - Big Hands

Recommended Posts

The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article about how NFL teams are now paying a lot more attention to the size of a QBs hands when evaluating QBs.

EJ supposedly had big mitts. And I'm sure the Bills didn't get him because he could pack a snowball better or play patty cake....

It's why they measure them at the combine.

Not only QBs but WRs and RBs.

EJ's hands are huge and yes, they indicated that was a factor after they drafted him. His overall size, including hands, and proven ability during his pro day to throw in the wind and rain also contributed. We saw that come to fruition during the Jets game 2 this year. So while other teams in different climates may not have had EJ as high on their boards, the two other teams that did have him high were Cleveland and Philly. Makes sense. Both needed QBs (Phil thought they did, ended up scoring with Foles and changing their offense a bit), both had similar climates.

Brett Favre who is arguably the best cold weather QB of all-time didn't have large hands. Tom Brady's hands are not huge either.

I don't like the idea of scouts focusing too much on one criteria whether it's large hands, how fast a player is etc.

Nevermind. Looked up Favres and it's 10 and 3/8. Would have never thought that.

I don't see how it helped EJ. Also, the climate argument is weak.

It has not yet , possibly. When he gets his feet figured out his hands could be an advantage with ball posession and ball control .

too early for any conclusion i think .

Weo I agree . take note folks .

If a guy can throw in the winds he can throw in the winds . Regardless of size.

Women er Coaches prefer men/QBs who know how to get to the endzone anyways.

EJ needs more time with out on the field experience. Practice becomes useless at some point with these matters
