prissythecat Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article about how NFL teams are now paying a lot more attention to the size of a QBs hands when evaluating QBs. EJ supposedly had big mitts. And I'm sure the Bills didn't get him because he could pack a snowball better or play patty cake.... http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304856504579338703990998202
White Linen Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I think this has been a key component for a while now.

Not only QBs but WRs and RBs.
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 You know what they say "big hands..... Big.... Ability to spin the ball..." What?
YoloinOhio Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article about how NFL teams are now paying a lot more attention to the size of a QBs hands when evaluating QBs. EJ supposedly had big mitts. And I'm sure the Bills didn't get him because he could pack a snowball better or play patty cake.... http://online.wsj.co...338703990998202 EJ's hands are huge and yes, they indicated that was a factor after they drafted him. His overall size, including hands, and proven ability during his pro day to throw in the wind and rain also contributed. We saw that come to fruition during the Jets game 2 this year. So while other teams in different climates may not have had EJ as high on their boards, the two other teams that did have him high were Cleveland and Philly. Makes sense. Both needed QBs (Phil thought they did, ended up scoring with Foles and changing their offense a bit), both had similar climates.
shibuya Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Big Hands ... especially for cold weather teams. That football in freezing temperatures becomes very hard to grip, and likelihood of errant passes and fumbles goes up in those conditions for small handed QB's
BuffaloBill Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Time will tell if the Bills put too much weight on this characteristic when they selected EJ.
justnzane Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 The David Krieg effect. GO BILLS!!! Yes, he and Daunte Culpepper each had freakishly small hands and were known to have come down with cases of fumblitis
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 They are of little value without fast arm speed! You know what they say "big hands.....
Mr. WEO Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Johnny Football has huge hands--and size 15 feet.
Mr. WEO Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I don't see how it helped EJ. Also, the climate argument is weak.
BuffaloBillsForever Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Brett Favre who is arguably the best cold weather QB of all-time didn't have large hands. Tom Brady's hands are not huge either. I don't like the idea of scouts focusing too much on one criteria whether it's large hands, how fast a player is etc.
peterpan Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 It is hard to be consistently accurate with a football if your hands aren't big enough to grab it. The larger and slicker NFL balls make that even harder.

3rdand12 Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) I don't see how it helped EJ. Also, the climate argument is weak. It has not yet , possibly. When he gets his feet figured out his hands could be an advantage with ball posession and ball control . too early for any conclusion i think . Weo I agree . take note folks . If a guy can throw in the winds he can throw in the winds . Regardless of size. Women er Coaches prefer men/QBs who know how to get to the endzone anyways. EJ needs more time with out on the field experience. Practice becomes useless at some point with these matters Edited January 26, 2014 by 3rdand12
BuffaloBillsForever Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) Here is the article that contradicts my statement where Favre had small hands. Let's just hope EJ Manuel doesn't become Jim Druckenmiller. http://www.eagleseye...lly-matter.html Edited January 26, 2014 by BuffaloBillsForever
agardin Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 It was a problem for Claussen I believe, he had a ton of fumbles in his short stint as a starting QB.
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Nevermind. Looked up Favres and it's 10 and 3/8. Would have never thought that. Is this based on a text from him? I remember several commentators making a big deal about Favres paws. Apparently Russell Wilson has bigens too even though he's relatively short in stature.
