jimmy10 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Now we get a name hire right off the bat, no messing around. This is different for Buffalo. Not to mention other teams wanting the coaches we've got.
The Big Cat Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 He wasn't too sick to RT Skurski's work that said all was quiet about 15 minutes after they New Orleans guy started the Schwartz ball rolling. Nor was he too sick to post nasty tweets toward people who responded to his baiting of Cleveland with a link to his Tim Tebow tripe from June. He is useless. Nor was he too sick to tack on the bonus "or you know this could all go to ****" which is the equivalent of telling a puppy buyer "you know you'll watch that thing die some day."
purple haze Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 As for O"Neill, the Bills should let the Browns twist in the wind for a week and take their time deciding whether they want to keep him. Nah. Why penalize O’Neil? It would be a promotion for him. Marrone should let him go onward and upward. They can find another LB coach. Just like McCarthy shouldn’t tie Alex Van Pelt to being a QB coach when he could be an OC with the Browns. Technically they don’t have to, I get that. Just saying it would be good mojo.
Big Blitz Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) I really like this. We just so happen to play the NFC Norris this year too which he should know a little something about. He can tell Dareus hey, you wanna play like Suh or a fat lazy bum? Really like it. Edited January 25, 2014 by Big Blitz

Because he's under contract with the Bills for starters and his new boss should have requisite time to make the call himself.
purple haze Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I don't know if this point was raised but this is the second big hire the Bills made a quick decision. Wasn't Marrone the first HC hire last year? The Bills didn't let this linger, which to me is a massive change. The Bills never hired anyone fast when Ralph was involved. Maybe it was because no one wanted to work for Ralph. Now we get a name hire right off the bat, no messing around. This is different for Buffalo. PTR Very true. I like this hire. Schwartz turned out to be a questionable HC, but as a DC he’s very accomplished. And the Bills have talent at every level of the D. I like that Brandon and Whaley have a plan and appear to execute it. It speaks to an overall preparedness and confidence in their evaluations. I dig. I dig.

purple haze Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Schwartz was low on my list, but not a guy I'll declare a failure before he even arrives though. I wasn't strongly opposed to the Henderson/oneill options of continuity, but trust that we were familiar enough with them to make a call one way or the other. Outside the organization I liked the names from Pitt and SF being thrown around, and would've been good with wade over Schwartz too. Trying to stick to rumored names here. Didnt like pepper particularly, I'd put JS over him. Essentially Schwartz would've made my list but he would've been low on it for a variety of reasons.ill admit it was a tough spot with tough timing though, and Schwartz isn't bad but I'm not particularly thrilled either and think many are overrating him Overrating him based on what though? As a HC he wasn’t the answer. As a DC he was very experienced and accomplished. Because he's under contract with the Bills for starters and his new boss should have requisite time to make the call himself. I know he’s under contract. That’s why I said technically they don’t have to let him go. I think it’s the right thing to do though. Either way, no sweat off my back. O’Neil won’t be in the bread line.
DanInUticaTampa Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 He will fit right in. He is already used to a losing culture! In all seriousness, it is a good hire. Would have rather have kept Pettine, but we don't have a choice
DJasper Probincrux III Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Overrating him based on what though? As a HC he wasn’t the answer. As a DC he was very experienced and accomplished. I think we're overstating the accomplishment a bit. He had a top 10 run defense 6 times, it was under 20 5 times. He was #1 once. He was #30 once. Top 10 scoring defense twice, under 30 three times, under 20 7 times.

It would also be interesting to see the talent on hand when he had the various results. Does play a part. Schwartz is very respected in league circles. The Bills have talent on hand. Considering the circumstances they did well from where I sit. Wade Phillips would have been good too, but I couldn’t see that happening based on the history even though he said he’d be willing to return to any city he was a HC in. Schwartz also fits in with the Bills under Brandon’s paradigm of young/aggressive. Edited January 25, 2014 by purple haze

He's been beaten to the punch by Schefter, Rappaport, Ryan Talbot, and the New Orleans Pelicans play by play guy. Not bad if we’re just counting his DC stint. He had good years there too and talent does matter but he but up some crap as well.

If they aren’t any good there won’t be any excuses for him.
boyst Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Worst case, not as bad as wanny and Edwards. Best case, could be better than pettine. So that's good, I agree. Reality- could go a few ways but I think its safe that it won't be straight up bad like many feared earlier this week. I guess that are my initial thoughts as well. Along that premise, some more thoughts: Schwartz has a career path very similar to what Wannstadt did, minus the Dallas glory days. Instead it was with Belicheck early on. I had done a 180 by this afternoon on Wade Phillips. I saw what he did with Mario Williams in Houston - which was successful but it made MW very unhappy and I have to trust MW and a current player over SonOfBum. Wade coming in might have been good because it would have provided a stable, familiar clamp on the sideline. One who has seen and heard and been a part of more then probably the rest of the staff combined. This could also come in handy should Marrone struggle and we need a new HC. Back to Wade. But, that's just it. Would it be any different then circling the drain? We should not have tossed Wade back then but that gives us no reason to want him now. Wade would have helped our defense but that is because he is a good coach. However, he would have hurt our defense more by changing our schemes and implementing an MO much different then Marrone seems to carry. Schwartz is a loose cannon maybe at worst and as long as Marrone keeps the mount tight I am ok with that. A QB coach of any type is better then no QB coach at all. The Crossman, Schwartz and Downing thing... not as good. We don't need the old Detroit boys club to form in Buffalo. Which, by the way, Ford family and Wilson have been friends a long time. Odd that we have a hard line path now between us and Detroit. Cleveland has been jumping in after us, too. The rust belt thing? Why can't we try to expand and get some of what Chicago and Green Bay have?!
Buftex Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I am cool with Schwartz...was hoping for somebody a little more accomplished for the QB job. A "guru" type. Downig has been in the NFL coaching ranks for 12 years, but is only 33. I guess that is not a big deal, but the biggest criticism of Matt Stafford has been poor mechanics...EJ's biggest issue. But hell, what do I know?
dezertbill Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) Love this hire. I was thinking of his name earlier today when considering replacements for Pettine. This is best case scenario. He was a stud in Tennessee, and his Detroit teams were no sham. Especially being a specialist against the run and 3rd down efficiency, that's exactly what we need. I'm excited about this hire, as it doesn't change our theme much. We weren't really a 3-4 but more of a 4-3 anyways. GO BILLS! Edited January 25, 2014 by dezertbill
NewEra Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Terrible. This upsets me. A 4-3 guy.....awesome. That Detroit D has be great the past few years.....
Buftex Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I don't know about all of this 4-3 3-4 stuff anymore. I mean, if we are talking George Chan's DC whatever his name is, then yeah, it matters, because that guy is a system coach. Can't remember all the details anymore, but I do remember, one of the seasons when Wade Phillips was our DC (an elite DC, as far as I am concerned), there was bunch of injuries...mid-season he had to change from a 4-3, to a 3-4...the big talk at the time was (Dan Dierdorf voice) "you can't switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 overnight, it just can't be done in the NFL, this is the end of the Buffalo Bills run"...as I recall, the Bills defense didn't miss a beat.
