ExiledInIllinois Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Okay, here is the scoop. A few years ago, my wife got an iPhone 4s. I went to set up her work email on it and it was a pain in the butt... BUT, I finally got it to work... I think I even started a thread on it. Fast forward to about a month ago. Thing is acting up... She can recieve and view emails on her iPhone that people send her, BUT she can't reply or send emails OUT from any network that isn't her work network... The thing just chugs and chugs like it is sending... Then when she docks @ work, bam! they all go through. NOW, from Outlook on her PC, everything works fine when she is on the network @ WORK also. Once she leaves work, both the PC and the iPhone will not send out. The iPhone & PC (Outlook) receives fine. The only way she can send out via other networks is via the webmail on her PC. She can send out through the iPhone via webmail, but it is really hard to see on the small screen. She really doesn't want a monster phone... Actually a iPhone 5 is too big! Go figure, I married a minimalist! Ying & Yang I guess! LoL Don't even start on Android... She is iSheeple! I am Android all the way... I can set her email up, along w/mine, on my Droid4 in 3 minutes. Is it something wrong w/her network? Work email? Outlook? I think the email is classified as "surge mail." Whatever that is? Or, gasp... Is it the iPhone? The problem a few years ago is that I couldn't set the iPhone up for the life of me... I finally purchased a 10 dollar iPhone "Outlook app" and the thing worked! But, again, like viewing the web mail on the phone (through Safari), that app is really hard to view. Then, I went back and tried the basic mail app on the iPhone and everything worked great... Up until this recent send problem. Any advice? Throw it out and get an Android? (I am typing on a 2 year old Droid4 @ the moment) Should she just use her Gmail account and have her work email forwarded there?
ICanSleepWhenI'mDead Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 . . . Go figure, I married a minimalist! . . . The comedic possibilities boggle the mind, but I'm feeling charitable today, so I'll just let everybody supply their own joke.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I had an issue with sending emails on apple devices at home. It turns out it was an issue with a Verizon-supplied router. For some reason, certain older Verizon routers cause this problem. EIL: do you have a Verizon router at home?
Dan Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Without knowing your server settings, etc., its hard to say what the problem is. However, my guess is the surge mail has a "configuration issue" perhaps with the out going server setup. I say this because I've had similar problems with my iphone 4s and our work email. We use MS Exchange server and occasionally it stops sending on my iDevices. In each instance the tech company that manages our email server resets some file and it all works fine. I imagine some setting file gets reset with auto updates.
ExiledInIllinois Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) I had an issue with sending emails on apple devices at home. It turns out it was an issue with a Verizon-supplied router. For some reason, certain older Verizon routers cause this problem. EIL: do you have a Verizon router at home? I use Verizon for my mobile network and Comcast @ home. The Wifi modem is my own, Motorola SurfBoard... She has the same issue on the mobile network and say @ places like Starbucks. What is "surge mail"... Does her work email have some non-standard system? Without knowing your server settings, etc., its hard to say what the problem is. Could they have possibly did something on the surge mail end and then it screwed up how our network & others handle it. She gets the same problem across the Verizon mobile network (3G) and @ other WiFi spots. I wouldn't know where to begin in the configuration settings... I know security and stuff like MAC filtering, but what gets changed for email... I have been telling her that it has to be be something they did (people who manage her email)... They claim and say no. Edited January 18, 2014 by ExiledInIllinois
Nanker Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 EiI, sorry you're having vexing email issues... again. You stated that her PC and iPhone can't send email unless she's connected to the network at her work. One would think it's not an "iPhone" issue per se. Could be that one of her mail account settings has changed - perhaps her work's settings changed or Comcast's did and therein lies the issue. If she can't send email over the cellular network - then check those settings. Sounds like only her work's LAN settings are working. Try getting her PC to work with your home LAN first... just a suggestion. I've got Verizon as my service provider and received this mail from them at the end of 2011 when they changed THEIR security settings: Dear Verizon Internet Customer, At Verizon, we continue our efforts to enhance your online experience as well as ensure ongoing security for our Internet customers. As a result, Verizon Online has modified the way email is handled when sent or received through an email application other than MyVerizon. If you only use MyVerizon to access your email account, no action is required and you may disregard this email. If you do, however, use other applications to access your Verizon email, such as Outlook Express®, you will need to modify your email settings to take advantage of enhanced security we now offer. In order to make these modifications, please visit http://verizon.com/emailsettings for information about the email settings you need to update. Additional information may also be available by going to our online forum athttp://forums.verizon.com/. Thanks for being a valued Verizon Online customer and we encourage you to act now to ensure your email account has the proper settings on a going-forward basis. Sincerely, Verizon Online Good luck. Keep us posted. I'm sure you will.
Just Jack Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 What do the IT people where she works say about this issue?

Keep us posted. I'm sure you will. Thanks Nanker! Yeah, I am just poking fun @ the iPhone because w/our Droids, everything works fine. You are right. I had a feeling that it is enhanced security through her network and surge mail. The problem w/sending is it happens everywhere... No matter what network, even on WiFi @ say Starbucks, etc... Yet, webmail works great. She is just getting sick and tired of having to bounce to her PC because webmail on the phone's browser needs a microscope to be viewed. What she decided to do is just have everything forwarded through her gmail account. Path of least resistance I suppose. Outside of stuff like knowing what the incomining/outgoing settings are, my network security config(s), I really don't know what to touch or set w/regard to this issue... I never had to do any of that through the years beyond intial set up! It has always been: "It just worked." Now, it doesn't work, especially the iDevices. What gives? Heck, I even figured out how to troubleshoot and control my son's PC through my Droid phone (VNC app, PocketCloud)... I control my garage door opener from anywhere in the world through the network through PocketCloud, spare Android phone w/camera and a Bluetooth "hack" I soldered together. YET, I can't get an email to send from her iPhone! I usually figure these things out and don't need advice. This is just baffling me, it has to be on the surge mail end! They say no... Oh well, hope the gmail thing works. Thanks all, unlike some, ;-P , your advice is greatly appreciated! :-) Now... If I can just get graphical emoticons on the mobile board, I would go all OC on you guys! Edited January 18, 2014 by ExiledInIllinois
ExiledInIllinois Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 What do the IT people where she works say about this issue? Jack, we are dealing w/library people here! LoL That is the thing! I think I am not getting all the info from her... Today I just heard: "Supposedly, the IT guy that handles the email for the whole system (not @ her library) says that there is a fee for settings that they can pay... Blah, blah, blah... And that even he switched to something else... Blah, blah, blah..." LoL... Are you kidding me! They are cutting and running @ HQ! WOW! I almost fell off my chair when I heard this... Months have been passing w/this problem and I am finally going crazy enough to get innvolved and I hear this! OMG! You gotta be joking! Sorry to trouble you guys... BUT they are on their own... I threw my 15 year old son into the gmail forwarding thing... LoL... I am going back to reading sports scores! LoL... Library people, jeesh! And they are supposed to be on the forefront of this tech stuff! @ my work, I swing gates, move boats, record data, and stop ice from forming! We sorta get things done! What the frig! I will let know how things go... Right now she is hashing out themes for her Google Chrome! Wallbash! UPDATE/EDIT: She is sending a test email Houston! (But not right away, still configuring a signature)! WTF!
ExiledInIllinois Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 Okay... Just got the test, seems she will be using the gmail route to send/receive from outside work fine... Everything is forwarding there. To my dismay, she more concerned with all the bells and whistles now! Wallbash!
Gugny Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Jack, we are dealing w/library people here! Pics?
