DC Grid Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Looking at the way the board is staking, it seems like this might be the best draft ever to have the bills typical 8-12 pick (what you get for going 6-10 / 7-9). There isn't any super elite must have talent that completely dwarfs the rest of the first round. Clowney is hot and cold and could bust, the QBs all are suspect in significant ways, etc. So the Bills sit at 9 with the easiest job ever, just pick one of the big time players that falls to them. The Bills could use a top flight WR, an elite LB, a QB if one they loved dropped or reach bit and grab a TE to finally give them a solve at a position they've been unable to truly fill for years. Looking at the draft I see 11 players that would be great additions to the Bills at 9. Am I missing something? Is the universe finally favoring the Bills? Any of these guys would be huge for Buffalo: DE: Clowney, LB: Barr, QB: Manziel, WR: Watkins, QB: Bortles, WR: Evans, LB: Mosely, LB: Mack, OT: Matthews, TE: Ebron, QB: Bridgewater. Does this mean a meteor is about to hit?
BringBackFergy Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I think there was a thread a few weeks ago on the #9 pick, but I'll play along. Of the 12 players you listed three are QB's (I don't see the Bills drafting a QB). Of the remaining players listed, and if history repeats itself, we will pass over on the LB's and TE's and look for a "diamond in the rough" project punt return specialist from Chadron State coming off retinal re-attachment surgery with persistent Bells palsy.
EasternOHBillsFan Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Sometimes I wish we'd go against convention, grab another QB, and see what transpires. I know it won't happen, but if it does, I'll be ecstatic. The pressure to succeed when another talented QB is breathing down your neck really does inspire the very best out of athletes, and frankly Manuel needs that.
Dean Cain Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Count me in the corner of grabbing an elite G or T round 1. I think WRs take 3 seasons to develop see Moulds & Stevie, and we have a number of young guys. Probably go TE round 2, NT or LB round 3 & 4.

I might agree with this if Manuel was a slacker. But by all accounts, he is a very hard worker. He beat out Kolb (not amazing but still). You're also cheating your QB of a 1st round pick that can be used for a position upgrade (wr, TE, oline). There was a time when teams didn't give up rookies after one year. Crazy I know.
D521646 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Sorry but the one thing in common the final 4 have is a massive, and ferocious OLINE.. We need one too if we are to take the next step.

The only QB I would pull the trigger on is Bridgewater if falls to #9 I really don't think that will happen. Maybe tempted if Manzel falls but once again I don't think that will happen. I would give Ebron a real hard look at #9. He is a matchup nightmare for the defense & he would certainly open things up for the Bills offense.

Never been a better time than now for this approach. The financial commitment the Bills would have to make to a QB at 9 with the rookie cap is less than they will make to a below average FA. Example: Mark Anderson's contract of a few years ago. They need a backup QB, clearly. Why not be bold and maybe get a franchise QB or the dilemma of 2 capable starters. 14 years of following the book on when and where to draft and sticking largely to convention hasn't worked.
Nitro Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Build a dominant Offensive line before investing in a WR, TE or LB.
The Wiz Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Build a dominant Offensive line before investing in a WR, TE or LB. Or even an average one at this point.
chris heff Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I want them to do everything they can to protect Manuel and open holes for Jackson and Spiller. On D get help to stop the run. That being said, I'd have a very hard time passing on Sammy Watkins.
Baba Booey Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Dream scenario, OT Matthews falls to us. I don't think he will but can hope. If he is not there I think you really need a number 1 type reciever. Stevie should be cut, this leaves a gaping hole. Evans(Texas A/M), Watkins(Clemson) or Benjamin(FSU) would do nicely.I prefer Benamin, hi and EJ played together.
Bob Malooga Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 (edited) Solve the O-Line problem in free agency...there are PLENTY of O-Lineman who will be available, at the right price. Guards: Travelle Wharton, Geoff Schwartz, Willie Colon, Jon Asamoah, Chad Rinehart, Zane Beadles, Richie Incognito, Shawn Lauvao. Tackles: Eugene Monroe, Jared Veldheer, Branden Albert, Jordon Gross, Anthony Collins, Roger Saffold, Michael Oher, Breno Giacomini, Charles Brown, Zach Strief, Austin Howard, Ryan Harris, Eric Winston, Tyson Clabo, Jason Fox, Will Svitek, J'Marcus Webb, Sean Locklear. ANY combo/duo of those guys would be an upgrade to Doug Legursky and Erik Pears...but they also like Unga, McClain and Asper. Once that is settled...draft Kelvin Benjamin (WR-FSU) in the 1st round, and then draft Austin Seferian-Jenkins (TE-UW) in the 2nd round. They need to get the offense up to par with the defense, a big WR and athletic TE would do just that, giving EJ 2 big weapons/security blankets. (*On a sidenote...John Wendling is a free agent, and a ST "Ace" whom Danny Crossman coached in Detroit.) Edited January 14, 2014 by DJshnooks

But at a natural nine that "RT" Matthews might be considered too

Watkins looks other worldly (and not just in the OSU game) and Evans also appeared to outperform Benjamin this year.

jumbalaya Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Freddy ran well behind a poor line. CJ's sounds like he as an excuse for everything, time for the guy to Nut Up. But imagine what they could do if we added a first round T and 2 capable FA guards and EJ developed beyond his Trent Edwards imitation.
