Doug Flutie Band Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 it's interesting to see how the league is so pass happy these days, yet the playoff success this year has been based on running the ball and playing defense this year
Dibs Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 There might be some correlation between the passing game and the weather. Just a thought.
thebandit27 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 As I said in another thread, the huge run games you see are occurring against horrendous run defenses. You're probably going to see this more often in the playoffs for the next few years, as the best teams aren't really built to run and stop the run; they're built to pass and stop the pass (i.e. pass rushers and DBs). That's also likely why you're seeing (relatively) fewer high draft picks spent on run-stuffing DTs and a far greater number spent on outside pass-rushers and bigger DBs. In the end, if Team A focuses on running the ball and Team B focuses on passing--and Team B executes the passing game better than Team A executes the running game--Team B is going to win virtually every time.
bisonbrigade Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Bills need to figure out there run defense problems, keep EJ healthy and they are a playoff team. The love affair some posters have with new QB's and big wide receivers did not show merit this weekend.

The Bills defense is consistently inconsistent. They play brilliantly and then give up huge plays - run and pass defense. My annual wish (one of them anyway) is for a great tight end.

I've stated this often (maybe this season it ends) No QB that has led the league in passing yards has won a SB. Passing yards fills the stands, but Defense wins championships

Get me Khalil Mack and Daniel McCullers(DT from TENN) and see immediate improvement against the run.
NoSaint Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 That's the way it always is. I've stated this often (maybe this season it ends) No QB that has led the league in passing yards has won a SB. Passing yards fills the stands, but Defense wins championships they say the best predictor is passer rating differential - ie pass and stop the pass. What youll notice on all these teams though is that while they can throw with the best of them, they can ADDITIONALLY run and stop the run for the most part. we are into the stage of the season where the lists of weaknesses teams have is dwindling quickly. if all you do is sling the ball, you wont win, nor will you if all you do is play stout run defense, or only have a good running game. to go on a several game streak against the best teams in the league, you either have to be incredibly lucky with the matchups or very good all around.
Doug Flutie Band Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 it's just interesting to consider let's not act like passing is not hugely important tho i mean look who is still left - manning and brady probably best two qbs of the era and wilson/kaepernick two of the new young stud qbs
FireChan Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 (edited) The difference is an awesome QB can get you over .500 every year because they always play a couple bad teams. Going against the Browns, Bills, Jags, Bucs, Vikes, Texans, Falcons, Cardinals, when you are a team like the Packers, with a good QB and pass game and not much else, is a slam dunk win 95% of the time. Once you get in the playoffs, the competition is stiffer. You have good all around teams playing against each other, which is why they are usually lower scoring. Aaron Rodgers could pass for 400 yard and 4 TD's against a weaker team, but you rarely see him do it to win a playoff game. Same with Brady and even Peyton. You need to be better or at least play better than the other playoff teams in more than just passing once you're in the post-season. Edited January 13, 2014 by FireChan

(Moreno, Blount, Gore, Lynch) Wilson/Kaepernick also have 2 of the best defenses in the NFL.
