I am watching this video now and this isn't really related to the video, but I really hope that Detroit pulls through. I see alot of shows on tv where people visit different pockets of detroit and there is a lot of grass roots stuff going on in some areas. they get a bad rap, but 'hipsters' are opening chic shops, chic cafes etc....it all starts there, hopefully it trickles down and things really start to take off. I've never been to Detroit, but I am rooting for it!

that was very cool. props to those 'slackers' for making lemonade!

Whew, I thought you were talking about one of these...

Ski_Dubai_Slope.jpgI was going to start to wonder how Detroit would have the money to build it.

Unlike Poojer I do not cheer for Detroit. I've been there enough times to see that it got what it deserved.

Cool video.

In Berlin, artistic squatters repurposed an old bombed out factory and put in 3 bars(one with a fire breathing dragon), 2 coffee shops, one movie theater, a half dozen gigantic art gallerys, apartments, they projected 4 storie images onto the side of the building, and it is one of the coolest places I have been. Never underestimate artists. Detroit has plenty of free studios everywhere. And Detroit has many creative souls. If you are in a band living in Detroit- jam out in huge vacant buildings, play as loud as you want, and get some cool acoustics. From the city that gifted the world Motown, Techno, Punk,, MC5, White Stripes, Stooges, Madonna, John Lee Hooker, Eminem, Stevie Wonder.....Detroit will continue to be a hotbed for creativity and genius

I root for Detroit too!

have you had a chance to look at what they call ruin porn? I think that's what it is called? Just old photos of older buildings in artistic fashion? They're quite amazing.

I will check it out, thanks. I find urban decay fascinating and strangly beautiful.

The MC5 producer was giving a tour of Detroit by car, and explained "Athens has ruins, Rome has ruins, Detroit's are bigger"

you can just google ruin porn then click over to images for examples but there are entire online communities dedicated to it. There are some amazing places. Old amusement parks that are abandoned, bombed out buildings in Russia, empty warehouses all across the world, just amazing stuff.

Cool. Don't they do indoor skiing in Dubai?

We got the landfill here in Chicago... I estimate that @ 100+ vertical feet? What would it take to dome it? Terrain parks don't need big mountain vertical. The would be able to get their water for snow from the lake and then return it to the lake.

when i lived in ann arbor, we used to ski at "mount" brighton, amazingly enough, in brighton, not far from detroit. it's a landfill hill with a 200 feet vertical drop i think. it was used in one of those teenage fantasy ski movies as the place these midwesterner boys learned to ski before making it as big time instructors with women hanging all over them in colorado. i'm pretty sure what the guys are doing in the video is more fun than mount brighton..
