The number of Americans signing up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act during the first few days of open enrollment has spiked this year compared to previous years, The Washington Post reports, citing federal officials. On Nov. 1, the first day of open enrollment, more than 200,000 Americans chose a health-care plan through Obamacare, more than double the number from the same period last year. More than 1 million people visited HealthCare.gov, roughly 33 percent more than last year. The high numbers come after Republican lawmakers repeatedly sought to repeal Obamacare at the insistence of President Trump. Obamacare advocates had accused the Trump administration of attempting to sabotage enrollment by slashing outreach and reducing the enrollment period. So far, however, state officials have expressed optimism about enrollment activity. “Enrollment year five could be a record year. It’s way ahead of where we were last year, and a big surprise,” Connect for Health Colorado spokesman Luke Clarke told The Washington Post. The open-enrollment period ends Dec. 15.

This is largely due to Trump withholding those CSR payments.  Ironically, more people now qualify for subsidies because insurers purposely skyrocketed their "silver" plan (which is the plan the government uses to determine how much people receive in subsidies) to make up for losing those CSR payments.  The average subsidies per year for 2018 increased from $382 to $555 per enrollee according to the Department of Health and Human Services.  Now people who qualify for these subsidies (who may not have before) can buy a cheaper bronze plan compared to last year.  The people that get screwed over are the working middle class who make just enough not to qualify for a subsidy who will see their monthly premiums increase even more.  Some won't be able to afford it and will go without health insurance.

It still baffles me why Trump withheld those CSR payments as he doesn't strike me as a constitutional conservative worried about the legality of them.  His decision hurt the middle to upper class ACA enrollees. It also increased the amount of money the federal government pays for healthcare.   Basically, the exact opposite of what he wanted to see happen.

Over 600,000 people signed up for a plan through Obamacare's federal exchange in its first four days of open enrollment, significantly outpacing last year's sign-ups, according to official figures released Thursday.

The Centers on Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said that 464,140 customers renewed their coverage while another 137,322 customers were new enrollees, for a total of 601,462. The number only includes people who signed up through the HealthCare.gov portal, which services 39 states

ObamaCare premiums are going up, up, up, just as I have been predicting for two years. ObamaCare is OWNED by the Democrats, and it is a disaster. But do not worry. Even though the Dems want to Obstruct, we will Repeal & Replace right after Tax Cuts!

Now, whether the GOP will actually do anything to get rid of the disaster that is Obamacare remains to be seen (and given what we’ve seen from them so far, it’s not likely). But this defense of Obamacare from Lawrence O’Donnell’s producer Kyle Griffin is most definitely not grounds for keeping the law around:

Should be noted that, after 3 weeks of open enrollment, people are signing up for Obamacare at a record pace.

Now dishonest Kyle (and others around here)  always forget to add one little point,

because they don’t want to have to pay the penalty that they can't afford for NOT signing up for Obamacare....

Premiums for a lot of lower income people are down because Trump's decision to stop the CSR payments to insurance companies in order to undermine the ACA backfired.  More people qualify for subsidies because they're based on insurance companies silver plans which were jacked up even more because Trump withheld the CSR payments.  Bronze plans are now cheaper for many people and in some cases free.  This is one reason you're seeing an increase in signups over the first few weeks compared to last year.  Trump unwittingly (I'm assuming) helped lower income people while raising the premiums even more for those who make too much to qualify for government assistance. The taxpayers will ultimately foot the bill because of that decision.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/free-health-insurance-obamacare-customers-are-finding-it/

Yet consumers who don't qualify for a premium tax credit may experience sticker shock. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation analysis found the average premium for bronze plans, which offer the highest deductibles and least comprehensive coverage, will jump 17 percent. The lowest-cost gold plans, with lower deductibles and more comprehensive coverage, will have an average premium increase of 19 percent. The study examined the lowest-cost plans in each of the bronze, silver and gold levels,

Experts say the wider availability of no-premium plans is the unintended consequence of Trump administration actions to undermine the ACA.

The president stopped reimbursing insurers for reduced copays and deductibles, available to people with modest incomes purchasing a "silver" ACA plan. Sure enough, that has boosted premiums for silver plans. But government subsidies also shot up, because they're pegged to the cost of silver plans.

The bigger available subsidies mean that cheaper "bronze" plans can increasingly be had for no monthly premium, after consumers subtract their subsidy from the list price.

It's like pushing down on one end of a see-saw, and the other end goes up.

In some cases, "gold" plans offering enhanced protection against the costs of illness are also available for free to people whose incomes qualify them for financial assistance.

....

The free coverage angle may seem like a cruel joke to nearly 7 million people who buy individual health insurance plans but aren't eligible for financial assistance from the government. They're left facing sticker price premiums that in some cases rival the size of a mortgage payment.

IF THE OBAMACARE MANDATE REPEAL WILL KILL PEOPLE, HOW COME DEATH RATES WENT UP UNDER OBAMACARE?

The increased mortality associated with the Affordable Care Act’s poorly conceived penalty for readmissions is unsurprising to those of us who care for patients.

Despite their intent to target avoidable readmissions, the penalties don’t involve a detailed assessment of which readmissions were truly avoidable. In addition to the reasons listed by the Journal, another cause of mortality is prolonged hospital stay as doctors keep patients “just one more day” to be sure they are less likely to “bounce back” to the hospital. (I've seen this a hundred times)

Unfortunately, staying in the hospital longer than needed puts the patient at risk for catching drug-resistant germs, and as doctors seek to justify watching the patient one more day, they subject the patient to additional procedures that are of marginal usefulness but which carry incremental risk of harm. Too often government policy is enacted when bureaucrats ask “what could go wrong?” as a rhetorical question rather than as a serious question.

Ouch.

BREVITY IS THE SOUL OF WIT:

Reporter uses 1,992 words to explain why young people aren’t buying Obamacare. I only need 12 words.

Obamacare has made healthcare too expensive and too inflexible for young people.

That’s really all you need to know, but if you want to know how that’s the case, here are 395 more words:

The key problem takes root in Obamacare’s creation of an artificial price-premium on younger, healthier Americans. Obamacare imposed a 3:1 price ratio, which meant older Americans could only be charged three times the insurance premium of younger Americans. The problem with this regulation is that it has forced younger Americans to pay absurd premiums to unjustly subsidize their elders. And be under no illusions, this state of affairs is morally unjust.

It’s not just that older Americans have higher earnings and the potential to have saved more for their health needs, it’s that older Americans are about to get a great health deal anyway. Consider, for example, that the average Medicare recipient now receives three times more in lifetime out-payments from the government than what they paid into the program. Why shouldn’t near-Medicare age Americans be forced to pay a more proportionate cost for their healthcare?

While Republican healthcare reform efforts would have raised the age-cost ratio to 5:1, they were blocked by the moral fictions of former President Barack Obama and much of the media.

Making matters worse, younger Americans are never going to get those same Medicare benefits our parents are receiving. Oh no, we’ll be paying off the extraordinary national debt.

Young people should be the most government-debt-averse and old people the least, but it’s backwards.

Finally, we are restoring the freedom to make your health care choices. This vote today will repeal the individual mandate at the heart of Obamacare.

According to the CBO over 13 million people will drop their health insurance because of this.   I don't believe that for a second.  I work in this field and the vast majority of people who are buying health insurance is not because of the mandate.  They are buying it because they can buy it dirt cheap because of the subsidies.  I wonder if CBO will revise how awful their coverage estimates are when a year from now they see that they were woefully off on this projection.
