The New York Times:

Just a few years ago, lawmakers in this left-leaning state viewed President Obama’s Affordable Care Act as little more than a pit stop on the road to a far more ambitious goal: single-payer, universal health care for all residents.

Then things unraveled. The online insurance marketplace that Vermont built to enroll people in private coverage under the law had extensive technical failures. The problems soured public and legislative enthusiasm for sweeping health care changes just as Gov. Peter Shumlin needed to build support for his complex single-payer plan. Finally, Mr. Shumlin, a Democrat, shelved the plan in December, citing the high cost to taxpayers. He called the decision “the greatest disappointment of my political life.”

Priceless: "Things unraveled." All by themselves and just like that -- poof! Who could have seen any of this coming?

As the United States Supreme Court prepares to rule in a case that could gut a major element of the Affordable Care Act — federal subsidies for low- and middle-income people — Vermont should have little to worry about. Only states that use the federally run insurance marketplace stand to lose subsidies if the court rules against the Obama administration, and Vermont is among the 14 states that fully run their own.

But even though its residents’ subsidies appear safe for now, Vermont stands as a cautionary tale. Despite an eventual cost of up to $200 million in federal funds, its online marketplace, or exchange, is still not fully functional, while disgust with the system is running deep among residents and lawmakers alike.

Meanwhile, the hopes for a single-payer system, once tantalizingly close, may be lost for years. Under such a system, the government operates one health insurance plan for all residents, covering their medical costs instead of having private insurers do it.

It’s just been a spectacular crash, really,” said State Representative Chris Pearson, a member of Vermont’s Progressive Party. “We’ve gone from this vision of being the first state to achieve universal health care, to limping along and struggling to comply with the Affordable Care Act.”

And they won't learn a damn thing from it, either.

SCOTT RASMUSSEN: The Ground Is Shifting Under Obamacare.

The repeal of the Obamacare mandate fundamentally changes the political dynamics in the real world far from Washington, DC.

Last year, an estimated 15 million Americans would have dropped out of Obamacare if they could. Now they can.

Another 6.5 million paid a fine rather than sign up for coverage. This means that more than 20 million people directly benefit from the repeal of the mandate.

Most of these people would prefer to buy insurance that meets their needs, but the Obamacare mandate did more than say that people had to buy insurance. It said they had to buy a very comprehensive and expensive set of benefits. Especially for young people, it was often far more insurance than they needed and far more costly than they could afford.

The reality is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to health insurance. Different people have different needs and preferences.

This reality will create a demand for a variety of insurance options to meet a variety of needs. Some people will prefer more comprehensive coverage and higher premiums. Others will opt for less coverage and lower premiums. All will be covered against catastrophic events but day-to-day coverage will vary.

Imagine being able to buy the insurance which best fits your needs. Or to put it another way, tonight we’re going to purchase like it’s 2009.

NHS hospitals ordered to cancel all routine operations in January as flu spike and bed shortages lead to A&E crisis

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/01/02/nhs-hospitals-ordered-cancel-routine-operations-january/?WT.mc_id=tmg_share_fb

Every hospital in the country has been ordered to cancel all non-urgent surgery until at least February in an unprecedented step by NHS officials.

The instructions on Tuesday night - which will see result in around 50,000 operations being axed - followed claims by senior doctors that patients were being treated in “third world” conditions, as hospital chief executives warned of the worst winter crisis for three decades.

Hospitals are reporting growing chaos, with a spike in winter fluleaving frail patients facing 12-hour waits, and some units running out of corridor space.

Single payer’s gonna be a blast

Back when half of all bankruptcies were due to medical bills as 1 in 6 Americans weren't covered.  When 82% of Americans wanted the health care system to be overhauled due to skyrocketing premiums along with it being nearly impossible to get reasonably priced health insurance if you had a preexisting condition.

You obviously disagree with how it was overhauled, but I wouldn't pretend it was fine before the ACA.

Bankruptcies were designed to protect the consumer.

Facing bankruptcy that’s driven by medical bills from a catastrophic event or events is no trivial matter. I have a lot of compassion for people funneled into such situations. It’s more than likely not their “fault”. But it certainly sucks.

That said, the “government” being the universal savior, is a horribly flawed cruel joke of a knife that cuts into the humanity of all of us.

So wait a second. The "Pro-Life" people scuttled a deal to fix health care? Why don't Democrats call out these people for the fraud they are? They want to protect fetuses but let real live people go without health care? Total fraud

ACA is not about Health care, it's about HEALTH INSURANCE.
