San Jose Bills Fan Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Where have you been San Jose? Out drinking with that Bandit fellow?? Regarding player weights, many sites still carry college or rookie stats even though a player may be a thrid year pro.. You really need to search to find current weights. Mosely is an exceptional player and maybe he can gain some weight without losing speed and agility. Or maybe he can't and a few extra pounds can help a LB fend off interference and get to that RB or QB. Additionally, a big, hard hitting ILB can intimidate and it's hard to place a value on that. I recall O.J. being scared $higbless when facing Chicago and Butkis. Out drinking? No, I'm sober for better or worse. My point remains the same. I'll take the bigger linebacker only if he's the better linebacker. Size in and of itself means little to nothing as far as I'm concerned. I am very wary of Tide players given the past experience. You follow college ball much more than I do, but didn't Rolando McLain have an impeccable resume coming out? Wasn't he supposed to be channeling Saban's brain when he was the defensive captain? I think history also proves why you don't take ILBs in the top 10. Actually I don't usually watch college football. I do watch condensed games from after the Super Bowl up until the April Draft. I understand your point about 'Bama players. I try to judge on a case by case basis so I don't prejudice against (for instance) Florida State pass rushers or Texas Longhorns or anything like that. My problem with 'Bama players is only that the rosters are so talented it's sometimes hard to evaluate individuals. I remember feeling this way when USC had Matthews, Cushing, Maualuga, Moala, and Moore on their defense. In a 2 year span they had something like 11 players drafted from their defense. When all of your teammates are winning their matchups, it makes player evaluation of each individual more difficult IMO.
#34fan Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 LOVE the Mosely pick. i don't see how there's any other option if he's there at 9. -The rest of the Mock, I'll let you work on... I'm sure it'll be different in another month or so.

Mark Vader Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 How do you guys like Taylor Lewan OT, from UofMichigan? Think he should be a top 25 pick this draft. I like him a lot, and yes he should be a top 25 pick. I would be fine if the Bills drafted him, but I would trade down to get him. I agree with your first two points, but I don't get taking a QB in the 3rd round. I understand that any player, no matter what position they are drafted, CAN end up being a star, but on paper (and during the draft that's all you really have) a 3rd rd QB should be no better than what we already have. The only reason I can see for doing this is the idea that you just keep picking QBs that you like in rounds 3 - 4 every year until you strike gold. That just seems wasteful to me when there are positions out there that have a much better chance of finding solid starting talent in mid rounds (RB, TE, DB all come to mind). The reason why I suggest taking a QB in round 3 is because this year's QB class is deep, and the Bills could use another QB to push Lewis & Tuel. I'm not saying we should give up on Manuel. I just think it would be a wise move to get a fresh face added to the QB roster who has starting potential.

Wayne Cubed Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Out drinking? No, I'm sober for better or worse. My point remains the same. I'll take the bigger linebacker only if he's the better linebacker. Size in and of itself means little to nothing as far as I'm concerned. I agree with everything you have put in regards to LB's. As with QB's, people get caught up in the size of the player as to their ability. Give me the guy who can actually play the position over the guy who fits into a weight/height mold of the position. This whole Kiko is too small for the middle linebacker position makes no sense. His size or lack their of (he's a whole 8 lbs lighter than Keuchly, whoa!!!) IMO have little to do with some of the mistakes that were made by him this year. First, he's a rookie taken in the 2nd round who is playing up to the level of some of Keuchly's ability who was drafted in the 1st but that doesn't mean he'll come out mistake free. He over ran plays, which has nothing to do with his size. He diagnoses plays incredibly fast and hits holes to make tackles, no size issue. He's taken on OL shed the block and made the tackle, again no size issue. He's intelligent and a leader which are huge for a MLB. The problem for the Bills IMO has been at the "will" or weakside LB. The combination of Moats/Bradham has been horrible. That position is suppose to be a tackling machine in Pettine's scheme, especially in the run defense. I do like Mosley but as you have said I worry about Alabama players and if they just happen to look really good in a good system.
Bill from NYC Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 The free agent guards are either two expensive for the skill level they provide (Levitre) or, simply, not good enough. That's why they're out there. Marrone said that he thought Unga, Asper, and McClain might be able to be developed into a starter. Problem is there are many "starting" guards in the league with coaches that want to replace them including two that occupy positions on our team. What concerns me about Marrone is that he thought he had starters at LG in Brown and Legursky and he could not have been more wrong about that. Because you have a starter at guard doesn't mean you have a guard that is consistant in his pass blocking, has the skill, quickness, and speed to pull, and can knock his opponent off the line of scrimmage. Those types are hard to find and the reason more and more teams are selecting guards in the first and second round of the draft. Very true CD.
boyst Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Don't know why but I never considered Hyde coming here. Now I am. And I like it.
Pete Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 (edited) I like your mock, but I feel like the most pressing need on this team is skill position difference makers. #1 find a team to trade bk with into 20´s draft Kelvin Benjamin - This dude is an absolute beast he has it all physically. Speed, Size 6´4 232, and he plays every bit of physical from jump balls to blocking. He needs a little polishing in his routes but that is teachable. He kind of reminds me of Larry Fitzgerald. #2 - Use our 2nd rounder and a 3rd to trade back into late first and take Austin Seferain Jenkins. ASJ is a all around TE prospect that NFL teams salivate for he has all the tools . He's cut from that Gonzalez, Gates tree of Te's with Basketball background. #3 - With the extra 2nd rounder we acquire from the first round trade I would select best guard available. There's 3 starting caliber guys Jackson, Yankey or Richardson whoever is left would be a big upgrade at LG. So that would be my plan, and if we even get 2 of these pks im doing cartwheels. Posted 30 December 2013 - 02:15 PMResign Byrd(and extend Glenn) Sign Brandon Spikes. And pursue Orakpo Trade down, pick up additonal second rounder. Draft Kelvin Benjamin, G Yankey, and Seferian-Jenkins. Take a 4th round flyer on QB and devote rest of draft to LB, Oline, Dline Edited January 2, 2014 by Pete

But I'll bet size in and of itself does mean something to you if I express it this way; lets assume there are two linebackers out there with the exact same abilities and instincts. One is 6'2", 233lbs. The other is 6'3", 245. Which one would you take??? Would'nt you agree that size, in this case, makes the bigger LB the better LB for your team?

BuffaloBud Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 If you get a chance, watch the LT from Mizzou - Justin Britt. Tell me what you think.
Cheddar's Dad Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Problem is two guys having "the exact same abilities and instincts" is extremely remote. It's just a hypothetical, Chris, intended to show that size is a factor to be considered when drafting players.
Security Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Bills need a run stuffing LB. In the last 9 years the highest the Bills have ranked against the run was 22nd, but mostly we have been bottom 5 or 6. 10 years ago, 2004, Bills were 7th in the NFL at stopping the run, not surprising the Buffalo Bills were 9-7 that season. Until they commit to really stopping the run, we have no chance, and that means replacing Kyle Williams who is too small.

They also need a guard and a big wideout. I don;t care which order, but we need all of these.
....lybob Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Free agency Paul Soliai DT Matt Slauson OG- Austin Howard RT It's possible that the Bills think they have the solution to their Oline problems in house but after the Collin Brown disaster i find it hard to trust their judgement, Paul Soliai is a legit run stuffer and short yardage specialist Draft 1a Jace Amaro TE- it would be great if we could move down into the teens and still get him if not I take him at 9 1b A Seferian-Jenkins TE- Bills will have to sneak ahead of New England to get him - would like to see the Bills using two and Three TE sets next year 4. Andrew Jackson LB- 5. Daniel McCullers DT 6. Colt Lyerla TE 7. Tim Flanders RB

I'm not saying we should give up on Manuel. I just think it would be a wise move to get a fresh face added to the QB roster who has starting potential. Ah, I understand now more where your coming from, but I still have to disagree. I think Lewis has earned his position as #2 QB, and Dixon and Tuel can duke it out for #3 (yeah, slim pickings, but that's to be expected with the #3 QB). I'm not remotely sold on Manuel, and I think that if they have the opportunity to draft what they think is a franchise QB they should take it, but since that's not going to happen in the 3rd round, I'd rather use that pick to find a potential starter. Now 5th round (possibly even 4th if someone drops unexpectedly), I could jump on board.
purple haze Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I love your draft. As I've said many times linebacking is a cerebral position. The best players are instinctive, intelligent players who understand the game. NaVorro Bowman is probably the best inside backer in the game right now and he's 6' and 240. Lavonte David is arguably the best OLB in the game and he's 6'1" 233. Keuchly is only 235 pounds. All of these guys are excellent run defenders, blowing up plays before they materialize. People here often fall into the trap of thinking bigger linebackers are better as run defenders but the biggest linebackers are still dwarfs compared to O-linemen. To win matchups, a LB needs athleticism and instincts. Rey Maualuga, Rolando McClain, Kelvin Sheppard are just recent examples of well-regarded, plus-sized LBs who were bad run defenders who football fans everywhere thought would be good run thumpers. CJ Mosley is a true linebacker, a guy with great athleticism, toughness and intelligence who understands how to play the position. Mosley's selection would make the Bills defense scary good. +1
