Okay fine. It's always the coaches fault. Players never have to do anything. FYI, not defending Crossman. Just saying how about holding players accountable too.

Who are the players that have left that account for the dropoff in ST play this year?

Seriously. If anything we probably bolstered the unit by adding Goodwin and getting Easley (who's a beast on ST) back from injury,

You should make your avatar a homer simpson pic with a Bills jersey on.

Normally, I would agree that players should be held accountable as well. But this isn't the offense/defense where you see continuity in player positions. For the most part, ST's players change every year. They may or may not even be in the NFL the following season. So how can you possiblely make them accountable? By cutting them? Ok well I don't think cutting or benching a player that may be out of the league will send a very big message.

It falls on the coach to get the best out these temporary players.

He is not going anywhere.

Don't you guys remember when we had bad ST before? This is what will happen.

1) marrone will say he will personally be more involved in ST

2) the bills will then say that they will change some scheme things

3) they will then devote more starters to ST unit

4) finally, after another year or two of this, someone in the FO will force marrone's hand and he will fire crossman.

That's always how it goes with these ST coaches.

And with defensive coordinators who are old buds with the HC.... as with Gailey and his good ole boys George Edwards / Dave Wannstedt

I would hope Brandon has Marrone on a short leash after another abysmal 6-10 season. Especially, when it was obvious that the team could have been much, much better if certain areas were addressed properly.

I sat there, watching, expecting, knowing a huge return is about to happen following the Buffalo TD... When a schlep like me, sitting on his couch watching a game, actually knows what honorific event is about to transpire in a football game, then the coaching is terrible... I pray the front office forces Morrone's hand on this one..

Pointing out that players have something to do with it does not make one a homer any more than a knee jerk reaction makes you rational. I am sure the Bills will fully evaluate all aspects of the team, including special teams. What we see on the surface may not be the entire picture. Special Teams needs to get better without question. I would point out that multiple Bills had opportunities to tackle Blount on those big returns yesterday and failed to do so. This speaks to poor play not scheme. The reason for the poor play is the issue. Better players or better coaching?

You saw it. Wtf? Touchdown, followed by 82 yard return. Minutes later td followed by 60 plus. Offside on field goal.

Whoever that guy/girl is must go.

i agree crossman has to go. but that offside was on Dareus. his head wasn't in the game. probably o/t. but it appeared the half-game benching did more harm than good. sit him for the whole game.

A guy built like Rob Ford was returning kicks deep into Bills territory

i spit my coffee out laughing

Bills fire DeHaven, whose ST unit was ranked in the top 10, to get Crossman whose units sucked in Detroit, and who cost us at least two games, ranking 31st in the NFL...

Crossman isn't going anywhere. Check out Marrone's post-game comments-- pretty clear that when you talk about missed tackling, the other guy having great returns, and getting some more core players in place, the finger is not going to be pointed at the coach.

Q: Two kickoff returns, after you had done good things on offense. What do you think went wrong?

DM: Well, you know, the mis-tackles is what happened. I think when you put the film on, you know, you’ll see going down [the field] there. One time, on one of them, we got collapsed; we missed a tackle in the hole. There were a couple problems on that one. You know, obviously, you get knocked out of your lane. The second one, there were three missed tackles. You know, they were in position to make it and you have to make that play. And we weren’t able to make it. Their kid had an outstanding game, you know, running the football and kickoff returns. He had, not even sure, probably 300 yards of offense. My hats off to him, that’s difficult to do in this league.

Q: I know you are going to go back and look at it, but from our perspective, special teams have been a problem all year, you’ve had some horrendous games: the Cleveland game and now this one. And here and there, there are just spots where you are broken down. Is that a key issue moving forward for you?

DM: I think, honestly, going into it, trying to establish a core of special teams players has been difficult. So, I would look at it this way: I think you could take things – offense, defense and special teams – and say there were things that we haven’t done well enough. ‘Spotty play’. I don’t disagree with that; neither would Coach [Danny] Crossman disagree with you. But I think going forward, one of the things we have to do, when you see the teams that have these special teams – I think when we have good specialists, [returners] back there returning, but you have to have a core. That’s one of the things we need to improve on. That’s one of the things we will address in the offseason.

You might very well be proven right about your suspicion. Maybe he doesn't make a change.

Or, maybe he is just tip-toeing on eggshells for the time being until he makes his final decisions. I can totally see him avoiding the topic for now, but coming back in a week or a month or more and saying that they have decided to make a coaching change at that position.

Also keep in mind that if Marrone is truly smart (which I think he is) then he probably isn't going to say anything or hint at anything until he knows he has a better replacement lined up. That would be the prudent thing to do in my opinion. Hopefully he has already sent out feelers to other coaching staffs prior to now or will do so this week maybe.

Good God.

This is looking like an employment program for his buddies.

And he thinks he is still at Syracuse. Their "kid" had a good game? Blount is a kid?

ST is the only serious issue I have with this team. Crossman's ST are horrible.

He needs to go in my mind.

Definitely agree,... I usually don't jump to wild conclusions and feel we should have a lot more patience w/ Marrone, EJ,... However if there's to be real accountability on this team, then Crossman should be fired!

There is only accountability when Greggo Marrone Chris Brown says there is accountability. So Crossman is safe and CJ/SJ/Dareus must go.

The special teams coach for Tampa likely just became available.

Marrone must have had confidence in Crossman to hire him. And Marrone also strikes me as a loyal guy.

I think he will stand behind Crossman, try to get these supposed "core" players in place, and give him another year.

I posted this earlier in this thread out of jest-- but there is a real pattern to handling bad ST play. The coach is usually the last to go.

If there is enough backlash from the fan base I wonder if he will change his mind?

It seems that every year the fans generally like to pick one person as a primary scapegoat in this organization and call for their heads. It is human nature (mob mentality really) that has existed since the time before Christ. Suppose the newspaper guys or NFL Channel guys start writing about how bad this special teams unit has been and start talking about how it makes sense to get a new guy in there? Suppose it starts to dominate the conversations on the Bills' own website and on the talk radio circuits. Do you think that forces his hand?

Do you think Whaley and Brandon tell Marrone that the team needs to do this for the good of the organization? They need to sacrifice one of the goats so that the natives (fans) settle down? Isn't that what past coaching staffs in here have been forced to do? Give the little vampires (fan base) a little blood so they stay alive and keep coming back?

Business is business and these coaches (even assistant coaches) know how the NFL works right? I wonder?
