RCOHEN13 Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I have seen some people say they think Thad is a viable backup and others say we need to draft another guy to be EJ's backup/compete for the starting job. I would like to see the Bills sign a veteran instead of adding yet another rookie to the mix. Here are some options and former starting QBs who are either FAs or likely to be cut as teams move on or draft a new guy: Gabbert - Jags moving on, could be an OK backup but not really a "vet" Ponder - will get cut, not sure about fit as backup b/c EJ/Ponder duo at FSU kind of weird Schaub - will get cut, could be an OK backup because vet with playoff exp Cousins - would require trade, low experience but high upside for success based on limited action Mallett - FA after this year, not sure if Pats will sign him Sanchez - could be OK? Will get another chance somewhere, likely. Playoff experience? Freeman - FA, Vikes will likely not re-sign Vick - Interesting option, not sure about mentorship for EJ which is what I would want from a vet Would you want any of these guys over Thad? Move Thad to 3rd QB or cut him? I think this is a excellent topic for discussion.. Still a bit too early for draft cuz so many teams with records so tight and considering our remaining schedule is not the most difficult, i could easily see us fall out of top 10. But this year, that may not matter cuz this is a very deep draft class especially at QB where a few will go top 15 and whether ppl here love it or hate it.. EJ is our guy and HIGHLY doubt we take a QB, even if stinks rest of yr. He's shown enough and i think the last 2 game he really showed he can move the ball even tho we ran pretty heavy. Hard to get in synch when arent throwing much. I think Schaub would be GREAT to have as a #2. I absolutely LOVED Keenum coming out of college and was praying Bills would take flyer on him in later rounds that yr cuz i hated Tannenhill and prayed we did not touch him. Outside of Schaub, i think Ponder would make a great #2 if he;s accepting of role. Came from same school, is a much better runner than most QB's in NFL and i think we would work very well in our style of O compared to Minny which is also a run heavy system but a very conventional O. I think in a shotgun, spread O he would be alot more effective and still young enough to turn things around. I'd love for us to keep Thad around, but as 3rd stringer, not as a #2. He will benefit from having an offseason with a team and not being a practice squad guy or float from team to team. He is very deserving of a roster spot here or somewhere else. I think he is a bit of a stretch as a #2 but wouldnt be end of world but would def like them to sign/obtain a guy with experience as a starter, not a spot starter. I definitely think Ponder and Schaub would be best options but i think Schaub will want to be somewhere where he may have a shot of starting considering he resume outside of this yr is very strong. I think he is best as a upper tier #2 cuz he does seem to get hurt quite often and EJ's been hurt on 2 seperate occasions this year and having a reliable back up was what killed us this yr and is a MUST for next yr. Outside of those 2 guys, i'd rather draft a 5th QB who;s a Keenum type guy. Someone who puts up monster numbers and is labeled a "system QB". These guys can succeed in NFL nowadays and our system is one of teams those kinda guys would fit VERY well on. This draft is absolutely loaded on QB talent and using a 5th rounder or so would be a smart investment if they chose to keep just EJ and Lewis (Tuel is not worthy of a roster spot, he is beyond useless, he was in college and was embarrasing to watch as our starter with those floaters).
Kirby Jackson Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 This team is loaded with backup QB talent... This made me laugh

I could get with Schaub because of his veteran leadership but I think Ponder and Schaub would be extremely risky in Buffalo. 2 guys with questionable arm strength who played in domes playing in Buffalo (though I do think the weather factor is sometimes over blown)? Those guys would have been awful playing in that recent Jets game.
3rdand12 Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 I dont believe that Thaddeus can be judged just yet . I will expect retorts a plenty on that opinion . But I am not sure what we have here. Due to his circumstances getting on the field . But for i now i will stand in his corner as a number two . i have no idea if he has a ceiling worth mentioning , but i would bet he can play better and more consistent than what we saw on TV. Of course we should not see him again , Lewis , even once this season as we need EJ to stay healthy, if only to make a point , and also watch the coaches get him matured to the game . If we pick up a vet i would keep Lewis . If we pick up a vet I would hope he would be the best mentor/qb coach as compared to the best back up as compared to a true competition to Manuel. EJ would really have to stagnate or drop for me to not think he would start next year. conjecture right ! But i have thought on this . Lets hope we see progress each game forward
GunnerBill Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 (edited) There is likely to be Matt Cassel as well isn't there? I think he's played the best of the three ropey vets in Minnesota... although on that basis maybe they keep him to compete with a draft pick..... I think Ponder is useless and Freeman's character would worry me. Edited December 4, 2013 by GunnerBill
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted December 4, 2013 Posted December 4, 2013 If I had to choose from that list it would be Schaub CBF Yup This team is loaded with backup QB talent... Has been since 1996
YoloinOhio Posted December 5, 2013 Author Posted December 5, 2013 (edited) Brandon Weeden may be available too. I know, he doesn't come with Josh Gordon, but another backup option. I think Browns will cut him. Edited December 5, 2013 by YoloInTheBlo
mart Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 If I remember correctly Schaub was good for years leading Huston into the playoffs. I even remember him being very good in beating the Bills. I really don!t have a clue what happened in Houston this year, as I have not followed it. Anybody know the real story? We all know a QB can get too much credit for winning, and too much blame for losing, but was it coaching, a undisclosed injury to Schaub, something in his personal life? Is his confidence shot so bad that he gets the shakes when he goes on the field?. Anyway, I!ll get killed for this, but right now EJ is not a franchise QB. We would all like to believe it because it has been so long since we had one, and EJ can certainly become better, and he can certainly get worse-Sanchez and RJIII come to mind quickly. Except for Pittsburgh EJ has just been okay this year-flashes of good and flashes of bad. Tell me how many 400 or even 300 yard games he has had in a passing league this year. Joe B at WGR does a great weekly read-In review-in which going over film every week analyzes each players individual performance and grades them accordingly. EJ grades out better than Lewis and Tuel, but is nearer the bottom of individual player performances this year. It is really worth reading. Anyway for what it is worth or not worth, I believe the Bills should get Schaub if he is available, draft a QB and set up a 3 way fair competition next year for the QB. Schaub having the chance to be what he was, a QB in the draft having the chance to be a top guy, and EJ having the chance to get better. A big problem with Sanchez and the Jets was he was handed the QB position after the draft like EJ was after Kolb got hurt, and had no competition and was not pushed to get better and taught to be better. You want to hand EJ the job next year; that is just so wrong and a recipe for failure. If you have a great job; guaranteed contract with a great salary knowing the job is yours for the year, so you can!t be fired---well I just wish we should all be so lucky.
