When it comes to key positions groups or QB, injuries in key groups simply kill seasons. The "next man up" idea is garbage at key positions. The drop off is too great when you lose your o line or the QB. Packers get 3 early turnovers today and cannot do crap with a back up QB. comment.

K-9 Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Not sure how any of that renders the next man up theory meaningless. Teams have no choice but 'next man up' when a starter goes down. If the 'next man up' can't get it done, then it's on to the 'next man up.' And so on. GO BILLS!!!
KD in CA Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 There's no such thing as a 'next man up' if you're talking about Aaron Rogers or Drew Brees or Tom Brady or someone of that caliber. Guys like that carry their teams....they go down and you see just how much the rest of the cast falls apart. In the case of the Packers, it's a little shocking since it wasn't that long ago they were SB favorites. But they are a far cry from their teams of a few years ago.

It's dependent on positional depth, personel packages, coaching, buy in to a "team first" philosophy, and if the effected unit was built around the skill set of a single irreplaceable player or not.

When Gilmore went down, guys like McKelvin, Williams and even Robey have surprised us. When Stevie and Woods went down, last week our other receivers came through. Even Thad Lewis impressed. I wouldn't say next man up equals garbage.

"Well guys, our seasons screwed, looks like we will all be playing golf in January..." It's obvious they don't really believe there is not going to be some drop off, but its not like that makes any difference...

Anyone can see that. 5-4 and they are in ahead in the wild card race, QBs go down and we go 1 and 4, with them I truly believe 3 - 2. Unfortunately the only way to do that in the cap era is to have mediocre starters.....but it wasn't a problem for the Bills for many years, so we know it is doable. Edited November 29, 2013 by Dibs

I wouldn't say next man up equals garbage. I was only thinking of Thad while reading but all your other points are even better. Even Leonhard did a decent job when Byrd was out.

bbb Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Next man up seems to work better in college than the pros............Might have something to do with carrying about 6-7 quarterbacks and 90 players on the team. And, the talent difference I'm sure is not as much.
