Gugny Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 My local high school will be playing for the Class A football state championship the day after Thanksgiving. I'm going to take my 10-year-old son to the game, as this is the school from which I graduated, as well as the school he currently attends. I've only been to that area a handful of times, and only twice as an adult. Other than Dinosaur's ... which is an experience that he'd likely love ... is there anything else in proximity to the Dome that would be both great food and a memorable atmosphere (keep his age in mind, please)? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Just Jack Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Sounds like you want to stay close to the Dome (walking distance). Here's a list from Yelp... http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Marshall+Street&find_loc=Syracuse%2C+NY I've never been, but Funk N' Waffles is one of those unique places you won't find most places. It even made one of those Travel Channel food shows.
The Poojer Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Varsity Pizza, almost next door to the dome...if Hungry Charlies was still there the way it was back in the day, that would be awesome...it was lined with video games My local high school will be playing for the Class A football state championship the day after Thanksgiving. Looks to be primarily a dive bar, now - and a shell of its former self. Bummer. Sounded cool. Varsity Pizza is still there and highly rated. Thanks!!!
The Poojer Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 hungry charlies in the late 70's early 80's was great...just on the heels of video games, awesome deli sammies, great cheese fries..then they turned into a micro brewery for a while then back to the old format....great place, great time to be close to drinking age Seems that Hungry Charlie's has changed ownership and is now "Chucks." If it looks decent, we'll go in. I'll let you know when I get back. I'm looking forward to the roadtrip and lunch with my son more than the game!!!

Gugny Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfQ0QAiqSUI Just watched this with my son. I think this might be our lunch destination.
bills44 Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 1. Go Williamsville North. 2. Faegan's has good food. Just ate there last weekend, before the SU/Colgate game, actually. 3. Varsity is good, if you're hammered and need a greasy snack. If you're taking your 10-year old son, I wouldn't recommend it at all.
BuffaloBill Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 O'cmon be a real dad like Beerball and take that boy to a strip joint.... Abou 10 minutes away from the dome is a place called Danzers. It was great but not walkable from the Dome.

We were in Buffalo for a funeral this weekend, and stopped in Elmo's in Getzville for wings....there was a crowd of people watching the WN Spartans spank Union-Endicott Friday night. If you have time, the Carousel Mall has a few new offerings - go-cart track and Wonderworks, both of which he would enjoy.

My opinion, is the ropes course (Canyon Climb) at Wonderworks, is the best "bang for your buck" of all the new offerings.

Which would come at the expense of Beerball's Christmas gift.

PromoTheRobot Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 http://www.kingdavids.com/ I developed my passion for Lebanese food while attending SU. I think I ate there 6 times a week for two years. Right on Marshall St. PTR

It is, after all, gonna be the day after Thanksgiving! Thanks for the suggestion!! PTR - Looking more closely at the menu, this looks like it's more Greek than Lebanese. What dishes are authentic Lebanese fare?
The Poojer Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 love that place http://www.kingdavids.com/ I developed my passion for Lebanese food while attending SU. I think I ate there 6 times a week for two years. Right on Marshall St. PTR

Kibbeh, Shawarma, Hummus & Lahmi, Baba Ganouj. They do have some Greek-ish dishes like spinach & feta pies, grape leaves. Whatever it is, it's was delicious when I was in school. I hope they still are. PTR
Gugny Posted November 30, 2013 Author Posted November 30, 2013 So we got the car parked at around 1:30. By the time we walked down Irving St., it was pretty clear that it was way too cold to mess around with too much galavanting. My son didn't like the offerings at funk-n-waffles (I did, dammit), so we ended up eating at Chipotle. Nearly everything was closed for the holiday. Varsity looked dumpy (through the windows), as did Hungry Chuck's (also closed). The game started at 3, so we didn't have time to do much exploration. Thanks for the tips, though, guys.
