Beerball Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 to Nashville undetected, then circle the Nashville airport for 2 hours before crashing? Oh, BTW, the wreckage wasn't discovered for nearly 7 hours.
run dat back Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Well, if he turned off his transponder, was he also flying low enough to avoid radar? Not so sure about the circling the airport for 2 hours bit. Sounds like a whack job.
BuffaloBill Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Sounds like a whack job. He did like Taylor Swift...
Marv's Neighbor Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 They didn't say IF he actually departed from Windsor, of IF there was any Flight Plan. We don't have an Air Defense Zone between the US & Canada so there's no positive radar identification required. If there's no flight plan and/or no flight following requested, he's just another radar blip. I would think the Nashville Tower would have been aware that he was at least in their airspace for 2 hours, and attempted to contact or identify him. He could crash anywhere in the dark and if; he had no lights, there were no witness reports, and there was no post-crash fire, it would be impossible to locate wreckage till after sunrise. Outside the "sensational" nature of the story, there's really not enough info to determine exactly what happened.
Just Jack Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 There have been crashes in the Adirondacks that weren't found for years.
KD in CA Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 In his own plane? Pretty damn easily I would assume. Last I heard, private pilots could still get in their private planes and take off when they felt like it.

Sure, happens every day, especially the crash & burn within an airport's boundaries only to go unnoticed for hours.
DC Tom Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Sure, happens every day, especially the crash & burn within an airport's boundaries only to go unnoticed for hours. And Nashville does have 24-hour tower operation. Not all airports do. It's also a class-C airport...under 1000 feet, controlled airspace is only a 5 mile radius (above, it's only 10 miles), so you could get that close, easily and legally, without contacting ATC.

He (crash) landed on one of the runways.
DC Tom Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 He (crash) landed on one of the runways. Yeah, that's a little bit less explicable. Must have been a REALLY heavy fog.
4merper4mer Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Yeah, that's a little bit less explicable. Must have been a REALLY heavy fog. It's Nashville. Hank Williams Jr. does this 3 times a month. They probably just thought it was him.
ICanSleepWhenI'mDead Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 If the guy knew he was impaired, did he circle the airport for two hours to give himself time to sober up a little before trying to land? http://www.wate.com/story/24529993/pilot-who-crash-at-nashville-airport-legally-drunk

mead107 Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Could be he got shot down and the government is just not saying.
