plenzmd1 Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) A 3 bet is a 2nd raise. The term has no correlation to the size of the BB. Generally, when you have a good hand, raise enough to get marginal hands out. Calling, especially in early position, only sweetens the pot odds for those yet to act. Can any shlub get money on bovada? I'd love to be able to play online again. See,this is why I am a poker pro...I was actually referring to 3x the big blind...and have been for at least 7 years LOL!!! Now maybe I can stop sounding a little less dumb than normal! In terms of Bovada, they have several funding options...Visa will work generally. I fart around on there playing poker and but use mostly for sports betting. Edited November 17, 2013 by plenzmd1
Maury Ballstein Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 like some have said on here before some make 10x the money then the player to the left and right of them. you can't control how loose or bad beats will come from the loaded player sometimes. it is what it is, keep the math on your side and hopefully you will end up in the positive. guy at a cash game i go to often calls 600 plus preflop with 56 suited, 2 other guys in hand all in with KK and AA, 56 flops the straight takes down 2k pot. low money players with KK and AA can't rebuy. rich guy donks the rest off. its poker.
ajzepp Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 A 3 bet is a 2nd raise. The term has no correlation to the size of the BB. People play looser at lower stakes. Play the highest level you can afford. Suckouts and bad beats diminish as the investment incresses. Later in tournaments, as the blinds represent a bigger percentage of your stacks, you need to be proactive. Bluff from any position and shoving is often the right mathematical play. The earlier you shove, the harder it is for others to call (mathematically, anyway). Wait too long and the pot odds will improve to the point that a call is the right play, even with weaker hole cards. Throughout the entire tournament, open your range a little at a 6 man table, as compared to a 9 or 10 man table. And at the final table, as the table gets smaller and smaller, open your range more and more. Generally, when you have a good hand, raise enough to get marginal hands out. Calling, especially in early position, only sweetens the pot odds for those yet to act. I'd love to see your hand history for an entire tournament. Can you save them on your site? Can any shlub get money on bovada? I'd love to be able to play online again. Wow, thanks man...this is something I'll be looking to keep in mind as I play. Not sure about the Bovada questions, to be honest...I've only just now started playing there. It was recommended to me by a couple guys I know who have been playing online for years. I had no problem putting down my $25 and supposedly their payouts are pretty quick. I wish they had private rooms...I'd see if we could get something going here on TBD again. like some have said on here before some make 10x the money then the player to the left and right of them. you can't control how loose or bad beats will come from the loaded player sometimes. it is what it is, keep the math on your side and hopefully you will end up in the positive. guy at a cash game i go to often calls 600 plus preflop with 56 suited, 2 other guys in hand all in with KK and AA, 56 flops the straight takes down 2k pot. low money players with KK and AA can't rebuy. rich guy donks the rest off. its poker. I'm trying to become more "process oriented" as opposed to "results oriented"...that was one of the articles i read recently....that was a big problem I was having, cause I would get REALLY damn pissed when I'd outplay someone cleanly, and even put him on his exact hand, only to get screwed. I had Kings earlier today and put this guy on a pocket pair. I hit trips on the flop and there wasn't really any draws I was concerned with, so I slow played him and just called his bets. He went all in on the turn and I called. It was my trips kings vs his pocket rockets...and of course you know what hit on the river. This is the sort of hand that takes me some time to recover from, cause I know I played it exactly how I wanted it and got max value from the slow playing, only to see him suck out and take me down. ANY other pocket pair and it would have been a huge pot for me. So I'm trying to just be mindful of the fact that it took THAT much of a stroke of luck for him to beat me, which means I played the hand well...and more often than not, I'll be the one taking down the pot in that situation.
Dibs Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 ..... guy at a cash game i go to often calls 600 plus preflop with 56 suited, 2 other guys in hand all in with KK and AA, 56 flops the straight takes down 2k pot. low money players with KK and AA can't rebuy. rich guy donks the rest off. ...... I'm assuming that the 600 plus preflop call was well past the players potential odds........because 56 suited is a great hand to have in a cash game if your opponents have high pockets & you both have a massive chip stack sitting in front of you.

I guess we were both a bit off on that one, cause that's what I thought it meant, too lol One thing about Bovada that I don't care for is that they allow late registration on their tourneys up to like 130 mins. The other day I had grinded out a stack over the course of 2.5 hrs, only to see these people jumping in WAY after the damn thing started and just sharting chips all over the damn place trying to double up. I find it very disrespectful of the players who take part in these tourneys to allow THIS long of a late reg period. I can see 30 min, even an hour. But on many of these tourneys, we're WELL past the half way point by the time the 2hr mark hits...and allowing people to come in that late can be pretty aggravating.

I really like the wording of that....as I very much agree with it. IMO there is no room for emotion in poker. If you have a good process.....and have the ability to learn and improve your process....the results will eventually occur. It is one of the reasons why I prefer cash over tourney play. In tourney play, when something goes wrong you usually can't just get straight back on the horse. In a cash game, when something goes wrong you can simply put some more money on the table and continue.....particularly good after a donkey has tried his hardest to give you his money and accidentally taken yours instead. Hehe.....I've had many hands where I genuinely thank the person who has just full stacked me, for trying to give me his money. Edited November 17, 2013 by Dibs

The way I see that situation is that any good player has had 2.5 extra hours to find ways to improve their stack size......and every player entering the tourney is adding the same money as those that have had that extra 2.5 hours of play.....and any player who enters that late will have a lower than average stack size. The good player has missed out on 2.5 important hours of play and is definitely hindered......and quite likely most of the bad players entering that late will donate it to the good players within their first half hour on the tables. It may feel like it is unfair......but I'd want it to happen as much as possible every time. Edited November 17, 2013 by Dibs
Maury Ballstein Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 just hopped back onto Bovada......................didn't have to wait more than 5 mins for the 33.00 6 man SNG pays top 2.
Russ Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) I wish they had private rooms...I'd see if we could get something going here on TBD again. I believe you can get a private play money tournament going on poker stars. Just have everyone send money to a trusted individual before the tournament, send them the password upon receival of payment, and trusted individual pays out upon completion of tournament. just hopped back onto Bovada......................didn't have to wait more than 5 mins for the 33.00 6 man SNG pays top 2. I didn't realize there was still online poker available. I believe I'll be buying a laptop very soon and getting back in the saddle. It's been too long. Now I just have to decide between Mac and windows. Anyone play on a tablet? Edited November 17, 2013 by Russ
ajzepp Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 .....particularly good after a donkey has tried his hardest to give you his money and accidentally taken yours instead. Hehe LOL! I was playing the smallest stakes cash game I could find last night, "$0.05/0.10 and I did relatively well for getting my feet wet. I'm going to see if I can develop a taste for it. The way I see that situation is that any good player has had 2.5 extra hours to find ways to improve their stack size......and every player entering the tourney is adding the same money as those that have had that extra 2.5 hours of play.....and any player who enters that late will have a lower than average stack size. It may feel like it is unfair......but I'd want it to happen as much as possible every time. That makes sense...I think it was mainly that I had no idea they were allowing it, so when all of a sudden all these people show up with fresh stacks right when I was really starting to feel a bit fatigued and eager to play the final few tables, it hit me the wrong way. It felt like trying to hit a moving target for a bit there. just hopped back onto Bovada......................didn't have to wait more than 5 mins for the 33.00 6 man SNG pays top 2. Yeah, I like that there are tons more people there than there are at Sportsbook...the only tourney I end up waiting a bit for are the multi-table SnG games. I had been misinformed about the laws, so I looked into it and found that there's nothing keeping me from playing poker right now being a resident of GA. There has also been a fair bit of movement in terms of the US-based casinos establishing online poker rooms, which will be interesting to watch. This is where I keep track of the news/rules: http://theppa.org/
ajzepp Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 Well, I'm getting really good at beating good players....it's the stupid ones that I can't beat
ajzepp Posted November 19, 2013 Author Posted November 19, 2013 I just called the Harrahs Casino in Cherokee, NC that is less than 2hr away from me. I had heard that they had poker, but then online it said it was only digital poker. I thought this was referring to those digital poker machines that are so popular, but it's not that at all. Have any of you guys ever used these PokerTek tables? These seem pretty interesting...I think I may take a drive up there this week and try them out. http://www.pokertek.com/pokerpro/

They have them in Crown Casino for the newbies(lower stakes). They work just like normal poker except more hands/hour. The rake is higher too from memory. I also found it harder to get a feel for the other players on the table. Edited November 19, 2013 by Dibs

I was wondering about that...I think I'm pretty tough to read in person, and I'm hoping that having people actually siting across from me as opposed to being behind a computer screen will at least give me a little more of a read on them...I'm interested to give them a go.
