That's good stuff!! Anything else jump out at you in terms of players and the round that they were drafted in? Tight ends seem like they can be found in the middle few rounds (Witten, Graham, Hernandez) come to the top of my head.

 

A surprisingly large number(of varying degrees).....but no TEs, sorry. I ran out of steam about half way through. I covered QB, LB, WR & OL(OC, OG & OT).

 

There's too many to cover here....and I haven't managed to be able to work the search function well enough to find the threads(of which I'm sure my data attachments have dropped off them anyway). I started typing some of the things I discovered but there were just so many. Suffice to say that IMO a full professional study done and implemented over a decade would likely see a higher percent of successful draft picks.

The days of regularly finding top TEs in the middle rounds are probably over.

 

I think you are correct there.

 

Here's a link to the last 10 years(2004-2013) of TEs drafted from rounds 4-7. Towards the far left is the total yards column. It doesn't look good :(

You mean like Jordan Cameron and Jimmy Graham and Dwayne Allen and Jordan Reed and (dare I say it?) Aaron Hernandez? Yeah, good point.

 

I think he meant after the 3rd round(hence the linked list I provided a few posts earlier)......which counts out Graham, Allen and Reed (all 3rd rounders).

 

There is a couple more on that list though....Celek & Daniels.

That would make 4 out of 100 players selected......which is a success rate of 4% or 1 in 25.

So.....draft 25 TEs in the 4th round or later and you have an even chance to find a relatively decent TE.

Agreed. It was basically a market inefficiency that teams were able to exploit for awhile. Other teams found gold in rolling the dice on injury concerns (Gronk) or character (Hernandez). Graham only played a year of college football after playing basketball and went in the third. I guess there is your other gamble that you might still be able to make -- draft a guy light on experience and long on talent, who might have been excelling at another sport or in JuCo/another division.

 

But now everyone is on notice to find these guys that are hard to cover and easy to throw to.

Johnny football, no matter what Hackett / Marone calls, he will find a way to make a play. Kinda like a guy named Flutie.

Manziel is no Flutie. LSU owned him last week. His maturity level is in no way ready for the big time. He should stay in school and no matter what we should draft someone else.

I think the point is that everyone is seeing what these kinds of players do for their offenses, thus they'll be "overdrafted" the way QBs are.

 

I don't think that's far off-base. It's not like good TEs won't be found in R3/4, just that it will be more difficult. Again, you trot out Cameron and Hernandez, I'll bring up Derek Fine and Tim Euhus among many, many other failed prospects from the mid-rounds.

Point well taken, but hopefully the Bills' scouting and ultimate selection under Whaley finds them a better TE prospect than your two examples.

Are you saying he will have a spotty sub par nfl career and never be able to hold down a starting job?

As they have become such a valuable potential mismatch and the passing games are so much more key it makes sense they are trending up in value. This new breed of tight end is incredible. I guess the guys with these body types were small defensive ends in the NFL past.

Yeah, the Alonso, Goodwin and Woods picks were horrific, not to mention the UDFA contract they wasted on Robey or the FA's they signed like Lawson and Hughes. What a nightmare of an offseason they had. I wouldn't blame you if you decided to root for a different team. I don't think anyone around here would blame you after what you have been through. Go with our blessing.

 

 

We need a guard. Desperately. No point in having two great RB's if they are going to get whacked just as they get the ball because a guard whiffed on an interior lineman.

 

CJ and Fred have been hobbled all season because they are taking a beating due to the weaknesses on our line. Legursky needs to be replaced and we could use an upgrade on both Pears and Urbik or, at the very least, some depth. God help us if Cordy goes down.

Or if Wood goes on IR like he has the past 3 years. That could end all this playoff talk very quickly.

 

The thing is, I don't see this FO / GM / coaching staff changing their ideas that the guard position isn't very important, or that the line doesn't need some serious upgrades or depth.

 

 

So with that #1 pick, a Mack truck :lol:
