Canadian Bills Fan Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Like many others I’m sure, my father raised me as a Bills fan and it is one of the best things that has happened to me (besides the birth of my daughter and marrying my wife) It is one of my fathers and mines closest bonds and still is to this day. Every day we talk about the Bills and what we think needs to be done with the team or the latest rumors we hear. I tell him that I get all my sources from this message board. You all are great. I rarely need to check Twitter or Google anything because I know that someone will have posted something on here first and it holds true 100% of the time. This board is truly amazing and I feel honored to be a member and fellow poster. Looking back through all the years I have come to realize that many of many of my happiest memories come from the Bills. Especially going to the Ralph. Being from Toronto and now living in Hamilton, we don’t get to experience the level of fun, excitement, and comradery that one experiences going to Bills games in Buffalo. I always get to the stadium early around 9am, just to take everything in. I stop at the duty free where friendly nods are exchanged with other Canadians wearing Bills jersey’s and shakes of the head are exchanged at fellow stupid Canadians who are wearing the jersey of a team who isn’t even playing. I pull in to the parking lot and as soon as I open my car door I am greeted with everything I have been looking forward to since I bought my tickets in the summer. I see all my fellow Bills fans and just feel at home. I hear the sounds of chatter, laughter and sports radio talk as fans tailgate with their trunk open and the radio on. I get to see special moments happen in front of me such as a father tossing around the football with his son. I also am greeted with the wonderful smell of tailgating. Oh what a smell. It’s just too perfect. I always tell people who never have been to a Bills game in Buffalo that the game itself is just one part of the experience and that the hours before the game are just as special. I have made the horrendous mistake of going to a Bills game in Toronto. After almost filing for bankruptcy(kidding) after paying the enormous ticket prices, the closest thing there was to tailgating was having a hot dog and a Coke outside of the Rogers Centre (yes us Canadians spell it Centre rather than Center lol) I have been going to Bills games for the past 28 years and there has never been a time that I remember where I was made fun of for being Canadian. In fact, I sometimes get thanks for my countries strong beer lol I just wanted to thank all of you for playing a part in some of my best memories and for being the main reason why Bills fans are among the most passionate and best fans in the world and for the great feeling that we are all part of one enormous family. CodeMonkey Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Here here! I must say I am a little relieved. When I saw the title I thought you were bailing
Homey D. Clown Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 You Sir, are my hero, and I base this strictly on your avatar alone, and your post wasn't bad either. I look at the toronto game as an embarrassment to the team, the city of buffalo, and see it as a curse to the team. It's an abomination, and needs to end. Cheers to all you Canadian fans who embrace our little tradition and feel the same way.
NewEra Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Great post. Sucks living in Las Vegas September-December for this sole reason. God how I miss Sunday mornings at the Ralph and my father.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Great post! As an aside, Canadian bills fans and following the NHL, had given me a great respect for Canada sports fans. Plus, Canada's national anthem is awesome.

From your Canadian Bills Fan CBF Awesome! I was born and raised in Buffalo and have lived in Ohio since leaving for college in 1993. I was born into being a Bills fan and it is ingrained in me. It has been very hard, but I will never bail. I love being a Bills fan, even the tough parts. It is a part of me. At least no one will ever accuse me of being a bandwagon fan. I may be one of those fans people make fun of, but no matter what I am always optimistic. I appreciate fans like you that don't go on and on about what the Bills are doing wrong. Thanks for representing Canada well!

Uncle Monkeyhead Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 (edited) I have been to about 6 or 7 Bills home games (moved away from Rochester 30 years ago so the only times I could make it were on trips back to visit family). I have great memories as well. The tailgating before and after games are some of the greatest times I've had with all my brothers, other family, and friends. In 1990 or 91, we were playing football in one of the nearby fields after a game....letting traffic get out of the way. We got crazy and decided some tackle football in the snow was a good idea. My brother tackled me and ruptured my ACL. Sounds like a bad memory but in my sick Bills mind, it was worth it. Whenever the old knee acts up, I am comforted remembering the fun we all had that day after a Bills win. My brother felt so bad he scored me tix to the next game, which was on MNF against the Bengals. I drove from PA to Buffalo with my leg in a demobilizer. Nothing was going to keep me from that game. Talk about electricity, it was two-fold that for a Sunday game. I remember eating chili and ribs in one of the lots and looking up to see the MNF blimp. We blew out the Bengals that night. It was a packed house the entire time. The Ralph (or Rich at the time) was truly rocking. I also was fortunate enough to be in town for the Comeback and we bought tix at the stadium. Wow, what an investment of time that was!!! Conversely, I have been able to catch the Bills on the road here in AZ twice, one in Dallas, and was very lucky to have a pal get me into a game at Green Bay, which we lost with Bledsoe, I believe. But nothing beats a Bills home game for me Great post Edited October 18, 2013 by UncleMonkeyHead

RevWarRifleman Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Canadian Bills Fan, great post. And thanks for putting it on the board. You know, Canada has been a big part of the happiest times of my life. I grew up in Niagara county & we could pick up Canadian TV stations on our black & white TV out of Toronto & Hamilton. (I'm part of the Baby Boomer generation, to give you a sense of time here.) My brother and I loved watching CFL football games back then. Moving the clock ahead a few decades, I live in Va. & as a history teacher, I would, many times, spend part of my summer vacations enjoying myself up in Montreal & Quebec City. The Comedy Festival each July in Mont. was a blast! Lots of fun along Rue Ste Denis. But Quebec to me was the place I really loved. Felt like I was in a small city in France, but didn't have to go across the ocean to experience it. That, coupled with the history of Old Quebec, felt like I was home. When I got married, spent my honeymoon in Quebec. Fantastic. My wife had never been to Quebec, and she loved it too. Now I'm retired from teaching, for 5 years now, and one of my hobbies is reenacting. I belong to a couple of French & Indian War units, and guess what my portrayal is? Yeh, you guessed it, a Canadian hunter/trapper. With one unit, I'm a milician (militiaman in English) and the other unit, based in Vermont, a Canadian ranger in Compagnie de Langis. Named after a GREAT Canadian fighter, Jean Baptiste de Langis.. A lot of people in the U.S never heard of him, because he gets overshadowed by Rogers' Rangers so much in the U.S. But de Langis & his men bested Rogers everytime they clashed. And they clashed often. So how does this have anything to do with your post. Well, you gave kudos to many Bills fans, as I'am one, for your experiences travelling to The Ralph & watching Bills games over the years. Well, Canada & Canadians has been a very strong & positive part of my life too. So I thought this would be a good time to express that to you.......and last but not least, GO BILLS!!
Gugny Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 That is a really great post, CBF. Now where's a pic of your wife?
KGUNBILLS Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 It's nice to read something more on the positive side. In the last decade plus, there really hasn't been a lot to celebrate around here. My passion for Bills football is equally shared by my three year old son. I only get to watch them on Tv when they play the Patsies. He will stand in front of the TV and shout Let's go Buffalo, while wearing his Bills jersey. ( We have to pry it off of him to wash it.) Makes me proud. I tell my kids how good the Bills use to be, And hopefully some day, they will witness Bills greatness for their own memories. LET'S GO BUFFALO!
