Can the single season sack record be broken this season?

Recommended Posts

I was interested in seeing where Mario ranked on sacks for this season, and so far he's 3rd on the list with 7.5.

While 7.5 sacks in 5 games is impressive, I'm surprised at the sack numbers of Justin Houston (8.5) and Robert Mathis (9.5). Not only does it seem that Strahan's sack record could be broken this year (22.5 sacks), but there's a strong possibility there could be multiple players surpassing it as well.

Players eventually run into good O-lines, that's what slows the pace.

Wouldn't that be wild?

Unfortunately, given the nature of sacks (not to mention Strahan got it because his good buddy Brett lay down for him), while three guys are on pace to break it, pace means little since they tend to come in bunches.

By that logic though, they might all have some bunches left in them, and could end up SHATTERING the record.

But normally, I'd say, through 5 games a per game sack count means practically nothing.

That said, I'd !@#$ing love it if our 100 million dollar man was the one who broke it.

I agree, that would be awesome to see Mario break it.

Its a long season. After around 10-11 games in, these guys that got off to a great start don't have the fresh legs they had earlier in the season. Their knees have taken a lot of hits by then, and they're just not as fast/mobile as they were in the opening weeks. After say, Thanksgiving, I think their sack numbers will tail off. That's my take on it anyway. Lets see how it plays out.

I'm hoping the improved secondary with the return of Gilmore, Byrd & a full time McKelvin will provide an extra little edge for Mario to produce.

It's not going to happen that he breaks the record this season (he's a Bill....that stuff doesn't happen for us).....but 20 would be great!

Last year we had a few guys on pace to break the record (Aldon Smith, JJ Watt, Von Miller) and there was the same talk. The pace eventually slowed down. Not that it isn't exciting to see or consider.

yup - often guys have 1-2 really big games, or a hot streak and settle back to an average. When that hot streak comes early it gets a lot of attention. odds are if the guys stay healthy most will end in the high teens but not mid 20s.

Every sack record should come with an *. Teams throw all the time. Sacks/ pass attempt should be the actually stat you use. It makes what Bruce, Reggie, & LT that much more impressive.

Similarly to the passin records that have been broken recently, I believe the sack records will also fall... Even the all time sack record. Again, largely due to the fact that teams are passing at an alarming and unprecedented rate...

Although Bruce's sack production vs attepmts will probably never be broken...

To that point: In 1990, Bruce has 19 sacks on 455 opposing pass attempts (0.042). http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/buf/1990.htm

In contrast, last year, Watt had 20.5 sacks on 581 opposing pass attempts. (0.035) http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/htx/2012.htm

yea - in order to to match that rate watt would need to hit 24.5

puts it in perspective
