boyst Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 There were at least 19 foggy mornings in August that I was able to count. The wooly worms are completely black. The simmons have a spoon. Farmers almanac says chilly and wet. We are going to get a bad winter.

boyst Posted September 27, 2013 Author Posted September 27, 2013 (edited) what the hell is that a pic of JB a persimmon seed. The interior white part is the kernal - which is what you use to predict your winter. If it is a fork, it will be a mild winter. If it is a knife it will be very cold. If it is a spoon - like this - it will be a lot of precipitation. Persimmon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persimmon They are about the size of a golf ball, and are very gooey. Imagine a kiwano mixed with a tomato mixed with a blueberry. Edited September 27, 2013 by jboyst62

I hate to throw ice on this because it's kind of fun folklore but unfortunately there is no scientific evidence to support any of these. Somewhat akin to using meteorology to predict your personality/life. http://news.psu.edu/story/141165/2007/09/24/research/probing-question-farmers-almanac-accurate http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/winter-forecast-part-iii-the-old-farmers-almanac http://www3.ag.purdue.edu/counties/hancock/Documents/AgFiles/NewsArticles/2012/NRHCwoolyworms12.pdf Persimmon seed - see Farmer's Almanac
Gugny Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Chilly and wet in winter .... that's going out on a limb. Our wooly bears are black and orange. What is a bad winter in North Carolina, anyway?

A lot of the old ways may have a lot of myth to them but they also have some half truths. When the sun feels stingy, it's going to rain. When the ants are mounding around their holes it is going to rain. Put vinegar in your washing machine to help get cleaner clothes. Chilly and wet in winter .... that's going out on a limb. Gugny Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 The worst I have seen gave us 20" of snow in January. Wow. Had no idea. That can't be the norm, though. How much snow do you typically get in a winter?
boyst Posted September 27, 2013 Author Posted September 27, 2013 Wow. Had no idea. That can't be the norm, though. How much snow do you typically get in a winter? 2" or maybe 3" in about 5 occasions. It will fall overnight or in the evening and be gone by noon the next day.

Not sure about the stingy sun but have seen animals change in advance of an approaching hurricane/typhoon. But those are not far ranging predictions or forecasts but recognition of actual physical (pressure, etc.) changes that are occurring which result in an imminent event.
Joe Miner Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 The only acceptable topic of a thread that says "Winter is coming" is Game of Thrones. That is all.

Let me think or ask my girlfriend. I'm tuckered out right now - but I know of a bunch of old ways that generally flow true, if you'd be interested (or anyone else). Have you ever heard of the series of FoxFire books? I think you might enjoy them.
GoodBye Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Sure is! We are in for a fierce storm this weekend! 60mph winds at the coast and 30-40mph inland and tons of rain. Whoopie...
Chef Jim Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Many of these people live in WNY. Telling them winter's going to be bad is like telling us in CA that there will be blue skies from May to November.

We've been in a drought for a long time here. We need the snow for some good skiing.
BillsWatch Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Put vinegar in your washing machine to help get cleaner clothes. Vinegar does not help clothes get cleaner precisely. It helps clean washing machine of calcium deposits. Over time this helps clothes get cleaner.

Over time this helps clothes get cleaner. well, yeah, there is that... You can do this in coffee makers and dishwashers...but with clothes it removes the smoke smell, odors, and some organic stains.
Chef Jim Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 God I hope so. We've been in a drought for a long time here. We need the snow for some good skiing. It's also been very dry out here the past year. We're still ok I think because we got a ton of rain last year but if we're short on rain this season we're kind of in trouble.

Both my bro and bro in law fight forest fires. They normally go for maybe a week, sometimes never, during the summer months. This summer they were only HOME for maybe a week or two.
nucci Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Is this anything like weather forecasters that predict the worst hurricane season ever and so far not one major hurricane has formed?
