Dean Cain Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Here's a picture of New England's starting 5 offensive linemen yesterday http://www.patriots....dc-74a0d090ffdb  With the exception of Logan Mankins left knee, 9 out of the 10 knees of the New England offensive line are wearing a heavy-duty knee brace.  Outside of Eric Wood, no offensive linemen on the Bills wears a knee brace. Kraig Urbik went down yesterday with a knee injury, not surprising he wasn't wearing a knee brace. Is this a coincidence?  The DonJoy armor series knee brace, http://www.djoglobal...ts/donjoy/armor, runs around $1,000 each. Couldn't an argument be made that spending $2,000 for 2 good knee braces help protect your $500,000 or more per season player investment? Is this a question that is best suited for the analytics dept?  The following links are 2013 GameDay pictures of all Bills linemen showing if knee brace is present:  #74 Colin Brown - no knee braces - http://espn.go.com/n...1/buffalo-bills #59 Doug Legursky - no knee brace - hurt knee http://cdn0.sbnation...ndard_352.0.jpg #70 Eric Wood - 2/2 knee brace present - http://www.buffalobi...9e-c29472eb112a #60 Kraig Urbik - 0/2 no knee brace present - http://espn.go.com/n...1/buffalo-bills #71 Sam Young - 0/2 no knee brace present - http://espn.go.com/n...5/buffalo-bills #77 Cordy Glenn - 0/2 no knee brace present - http://www.buffalone...22009998&Ref=PH #79 Erik Pears - 0/2 no knee brace present - http://espn.go.com/n...4/buffalo-bills #66 Thomas Welch - 0/2 no knee brace present - http://espn.go.com/n...9/buffalo-bills
metzelaars_lives Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 (edited) Who says the Bills offensive line is injury prone? They have had the same starting 5 all season save for Urbik missing one series. Last season, Glenn, Levitre and Urbik didn't miss a snap and Pears/Hairston kind of platooned depending on who was healthy. Wood, the one guy who wears a knee brace (according to you) got hurt for two games as he does every year. I would venture to say that in recent years, the Bills offensive line has been particularly resistant to injury. What in the world are you talking about? And also, what are you, a knee brace salesman? Edited September 23, 2013 by metzelaars_lives

Do you scrutinize every team and see how many of them lose backup guards for a month here and there? And whom amongst them was wearing knee braces at the time? Are you certain that Legursky wasn't wearing a knee brace? I guarantee you that, again, in recent years, the Bills have suffered fewer injuries on their offensive line than just about any team in the league. Every team gets injuries! If knee braces were the magic solution then everyone would wear them. Get real man. Edited September 23, 2013 by metzelaars_lives
Matt in KC Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 So, let me see if I follow.... Patriots o-line wears knee braces Bills o-line does not wear knee braces Kraig Urbik hurt his knee And you're wondering if the above is a coincidence? Well, it's certainly not a pattern!
CBD Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 My assumption is that it is the discretion of the player on whether they wear a brace or not.

You do realize in 2011 no knee brace, and he gets bumped from behind in Dallas and he blows out his left knee. In 2012 wearing a knee brace he gets crushed and he just suffers an MCL sprain and was out only 2 weeks. I'll take sprains over tears any day of the week.

NoSaint Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Â Â You brought up Eric Wood last year. Â so the lack of knee brace was the only explanation? and our guys are getting hurt at a higher rate than someone elses because of it? Â im not opposed to the measure, but im not sure you made a great case besides "knee brace good, injury bad."
Dean Cain Posted September 23, 2013 Author Posted September 23, 2013 Glenn was out for a bit with a high ankle sprain... i think it was 3 games or so last season Most teams are using a DonJoy Velocity ES ankle brace for the Olinemen too. http://www.djoglobal.com/products/donjoy/velocity-es-extra-support. Â so the lack of knee brace was the only explanation? and our guys are getting hurt at a higher rate than someone elses because of it? Â im not opposed to the measure, but im not sure you made a great case besides "knee brace good, injury bad." Â The case is let's track New England's oline this year and see who comes out healthier.
Captain Hindsight Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 The case is let's track New England's oline this year and see who comes out healthier. Will we include the use of HGH as a factor?
DR109 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 I'd be happy with the O-line blocking for a change......not sure injuries have anything to do with that at this point........
Alaska Darin Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 Dude if it was that simple, then everyone would wear them. Right. Like NHL players went out on their own and started wearing helmets. Or like NASCAR drivers didn't need someone to die and then the sport to mandate the use of HANS restraints? Â There are a long list of examples of this kind of thing. I can remember all the flack Eric Dickerson got because he wore pretty much every pad that was available to him, including eye protection. And Franco Harris catching a ton of flack because he'd step out of bounds rather than take a hit to get an extra yard. It's a machismo attitude.
DaBills51 Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 (edited) I really don't see why everyone felt the need to bash the guy for his post. The tendency of this board to bash 90% of the posters on here is borderline pathetic. Now, I realize that many of the posts, especially after a loss, tend to be overly dramatic and deserve some bashing; however, I don't see how this post could illicit such a reaction.  For those who feel that the OP's notion was ludicrous, I would strongly encourage you to check out the following links:  http://www.behindthe...amp-mike-tomlin http://profootballta...ar-knee-braces/ http://www.coachings...ear-knee-braces http://boltbeat.com/...-everyone-else/ http://www.betterbra...fensive-linemen  I hate to break it to some of you, but almost all NFL teams REQUIRE their offensive lineman to wear knee braces during practice and training camp. And, in college, many schools REQUIRE their offensive lineman to wear knee braces during games, as well.  Generally, the Patriots are ahead of the curve on a lot of matters, and things have typically worked out well for them. So, would it really be that bad of an idea to take one of their practices into consideration? Edited September 23, 2013 by DaBills51

BillsWatch Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 My assumption is that it is the discretion of the player on whether they wear a brace or not. Â And NFLPA will not allow otherwise unless really pushed like with other safety equipment.
