ExiledInIllinois Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 (edited) http://www.foxnews.c...nt-in-161-file/ We would have had glowing grass fed cows! "...Two hydrogen bombs were accidentally dropped over the city of Goldsboro, North Carolina on January 23, 1961 when the B-52 plane carrying them broke up in mid-air, according to the file. One of the bombs began to detonate -- a single switch was all that stopped it from doing so. The three other safety mechanisms designed to prevent an unintended detonation failed. The US government has acknowledged the accident before, but the 1969 document is the first confirmation of how close the United States came to nuclear catastrophe on that day..." You sure there wasn't leaking radiation? Edited September 21, 2013 by ExiledInIllinois
Nanker Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 This story is on The History Channel from time to time. There have been 9 broken arrows to date. One of the worst was over Spain. We now have acres of Palomares Spanish soil in a vault somewhere out west. Check the link. It'll get you thinking. We've been "lucky".

That is exactly what I was thinking about being "lucky"... Man could things have taken a turn for the worst. EDIT: "While the Air Force recovered the bomb’s plutonium, the thermonuclear stage containing uranium was never found. The Air Force subsequently purchased and fenced off a land easement in the area where officials believe the uranium lies." boyst's farm? ;-) ;-)

You sure there wasn't leaking radiation? Meh ... Just some well cooked Tar Heels That does give you pause as these things are proliferating. The more bombs there are the more chances that one goes boom unintentionally.
KD in CA Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Unreal that they were flying around with live nukes all the time back then. Good grief.
ExiledInIllinois Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 Unreal that they were flying around with live nukes all the time back then. Good grief. It was the early 1960's. Maybe they were looking for BOBBY Goldsboro? A pre-emptive strike! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59BZxgohr9g
