Stats (From ESPN) on our 3rd down offense and defense:

THIRD-DOWN OFFENSE

This week: 20th (10 of 27, 37 percent)

Last week: Tied-26th (4 of 13, 30.8 percent)

THIRD-DOWN DEFENSE

This week: Tied-29th (opponents 18 of 36, 50 percent)

Last week: 26th (opponents 11 of 20, 55 percent)

If they can fix this issue I think this team will go places. The defense needs to stop giving those 3rd and longs....

3rd and longs on defense has been the Bane of this teams existence over the past 13 years. Absolutely makes me want to punch a baby just thinking about it.

Our stats are getting better though.

Week 2 actual stats:

Offense: 6 of 14, 42 percent (improvement of 5 percent)

Defense: 7 of 16, 43 percent (improvement of 12 percent)

Still not good.....but both were around the 'average' area last week.

I swear they were (relatively) bad at 3rd and long defense even during the Super Bowl era. I am sure it's been more than just the 13 years.

I would imagine that points to lack of depth in the secondary?

I'd like to see it broken down into three categories:

3rd and < 5

3rd and 5-9

3rd and 10 or >

The third category, in particular, is what kills a defense.

A number could be fixed by avoiding stupid penalties that lead to 3rd and long on O, and that allow 3rd down conversions for the D

Darryl Talley just missed another 3rd down tackle against the Giants in case you were wondering...
