Bill from NYC Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 (edited) 1) Kyle Williams impressed the hell out of me. Coming into this game, I viewed him as a player who was all but finished. Want to talk about effort? The man gave everything he had in this football game. 2) Speaking of "Williams," Aaron Williams played very well imo in spite of that one incredibly stupid out of bounds hit. 3) There are just so many posters on this great site who do more work on the draft than I do. That said, Robert Woods was my favorite wide receiver in this draft. This kid is going to be great. He loves playing football and is SMART. I am thrilled by his performance today. Aside from his 68 yards receiving, he made no mistakes on special teams. We are going to have fun watching this kid. 4) Mario Williams earned his money today. He played at a superstar level, and is my favorite NFL player due to what he does off of the football field. He donates huge dollars to the Houston Police Department. That's enough for me. 5) I must say, I am furious about the play calling at the end of the second quarter. They RAN the football in a hurry up, and gave the Panthers the football with 2:07 left. This was idiotic. There is NO FREAKING WAY they should have afforded them an extra time out (the deuce). This cost us points, and almost the game. So who do we blame? The OC or Marrone? Either way, this was totally unacceptable. 6)Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world. The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own. Wake now discover that YOU are the song, that the morning brings. The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs, of its own 7) OK, I was seriously pissed off when the Bills attempted a 55 yard field goal. Especially after the miss from 42. What do I know lol? And not for nothing, the last one he made was insane. Watching it, I thought it was 8 or 10 yards short. 8) Hey, I never complain about announcers, nor much else about telecasts. But today, I think that the camera man was on drugs. He was missing key shots. Am I the only one who noticed this? 9) EJ? His numbers were very good, and his potential is beyond limit. That said, count me as one who believes that he will need to run it himself to achieve his full potential, which imo is good enough to win a superbowl. 10) The OL played well today. Imo, the player who did the best work on this unit was Urbik. He looks to be in great physical shape, and he kicked some ass in this football game. Again, the camera work was bad; I welcome opinions on this comment. 11) Spiller did his job today. He gave us long gains, key first downs and didn't cough up the football. 12) Bills Fans are the best fans of any team in any sport. 13) Kiko is going to be a flat out star. 14) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bschmoove Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Bill - I always look forward to your postgame comments. Adds a lot of quality to this board. Have to agree on Mario ... And to think he did this against the elusive and mobile Newton.
Max Fischer Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 12. Except for those who were leaving when only down six. IMO, before you head to the gates, the Bills bill better be down at least three scores with less that two minutes left. Otherwise, inexcusable and you should not be allowed back in.
Fixxxer Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 (edited) My observations from today's game: 1) McKelvin Vs. S. Smith, I thought he was going to struggle against him, when he was beat the DL helped him but he also shut him down on occasions. 2) Designed quick plays to the slowest player on offense and on third downs, That is a no-no. 3) Stupid penalties, I was going bananas with the refs in the GDT (for that I apologize) but we're responsible for those penalties. 4) Summers should be used as a runner and receiver out of the backfield, otherwise put Fred as a FB. 5) More Easley and Gragg on offense, I know we should be patient with WRs but has Graham done to win the starting job. 6) Woods 2pt convertion catch was that of a playmaker, that was clutch. mannc Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 5. I was more upset with the two fades that were called from the Carolina 2 yard line. That is Fred Jackson territory. Was happy to see him get the ball from there on the next possession. Result? TD!
BuffaloBillsMagic1 Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Woods is going to be a star. Great pick. Though Kiko looks like a thin WR, the guy can tackle. Just wished he wore bigger bads so he would look more imposing. Guy can play. A willams and Leodis are playing great with new pass rush. Mario is super again thanks to a defense that is made for our players. great coaching alll around. Cant wait for Byrd/gilmore to get healthy. Think the refs have been jobbing us afew times.
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 #3 I'll be surprised if we see Woods on ST much longer. As has been mentioned in other threads, give Woods tweo years at most, he's be a true #1, which is fine as having Stevie as a #2 would be stronger than most teams #8 I think the problem is the TV crews aren't use to the speed the Bill's a running plays and are too busy showing replays or showing hot women i nthe stands to be ready for the next play. I noticed the same thing in a coupel of the pre-season games too. #13 Agree Kiko is looking good. 3) There are just so many posters on this great site who do more work on the draft than I do. That said, Robert Woods was my favorite wide receiver in this draft. This kid is going to be great. He loves playing football and is SMART. I am thrilled by his performance today. That said, count me as one who believes that he will need to run it himself to achieve his full potential, which imo is good enough to win a superbowl. I know these thoughts are supposed to be in no particular order, buuuut...number nine? Really? A Bills 1st round picked rookie QB does that and he's the ninth thought you list? For shame. Make no mistake, EJ doing what he did was the biggest moment in this franchise's history since the Bills got the lead with 16 seconds left in the MCM game. His second game as a rookie leading a long time loser franchise to a last second come from behind win, that's insane. Edited September 15, 2013 by 1billsfan
BillnutinHouston Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 2) Designed quick plays to the slowest player on offense and on third downs, That is a no-no. Agree 100%. This must be fixed. Chandler has no mobility. 0.
Bill from NYC Posted September 15, 2013 Author Posted September 15, 2013 Make no mistake, EJ doing what he did was the biggest moment in this franchise's history since the Bills got the lead with 16 seconds left in the MCM game. His second game as a rookie leading a long time loser franchise to a last second come from behind win, that's insane. As I said, his potential is beyond limit. I think that he can actually be GREAT. I will go as far as to say that I would rather have EJ on my football team than Cam Newton. I am just saying that I want to see him run more.
Kelly the Dog Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 This is always the best thread to give your personal observations of the game. Thanks again, Bill. My observations: 1] After two games, the MVP of this team and biggest difference is Mike Pettine. I think we have to give some credit to Marrone and Brandon for getting him. On defense especially, you need talent, scheme, and play calling (knowing when to pressure and rts when not to). Play-calling on defense is highly underrated. And Pettine called a terrific game. I only had one problem with him, backing off the pressure with 2 minutes left in the first half. But Pettine is a very, very good coach. We will be lucky to have him for two years. 2] EJ missed a lot of passes. No question. He must be better. He really only had the one good drive. But I'm not worried about that long term. He did a lot of good things. How confident he is, and his leadership is off the charts for a rookie, especially on a team like the Bills. The composure he shows is extraordinary. He missed at least five passes he needs to hit though. His stats look WAY better than he played. The fumble I don't blame him for but the INT was terrible and he missed at least four passes he needs to hit. 3] TJ Graham stinks. He's woefully bad. The INT was a terrible pass by EJ but if TJ just came back for the ball it would have been an INC and not an INT. 4] Kiko and Woods are flat terrific players and draft picks. I'm not sure whether it was Buddy or Brandon or Whaley or a combination of the three, but turning the #8 pick into EJ and Kiko was brilliant. Woods is one of the most polished rookie WR I have ever seen. He's everything expected and more. Graham stinks, but if Goodwin or Easley become a reliable deep threat, this offense has tremendous potential with EJ, CJ, and FJ. 5] The Aaron Williams penalty was criminally stupid and unconscionable. He actually looks decent as a safety, way better than I imagined. But the stupidity of that play gives me serious worry. 6] It almost seems impossible to fathom but I'm not sure Mario's 4.5 sacks fully exhibits what a great game he had. 7] Fred Ex still has it and is still a huge part of this team. 8] I really liked both the play calling and the play design of Hackett, especially the final TD which was brilliant. I assume that EJ is still a little hampered in the knee so they don't want to run him much and will later. I was wrong when I thought, according to EJ and Marrone that Manuel was 100% in the Patsie game. He wasn't. 9] Justin Rogers and Jim Leonhard still stink overall even though they have made some singularly good plays. Nickell Robey actually looks good. I'm not sure specifically what Donny Henderson has done but he seems like he has done a terrific job. 10] Kyle Williams was a stud the whole game, the best game he has played in two years IMO. 11] Marcus Easley needs to be on the field ahead of TJ Graham. Easley is a playmaker, or could be. 12] I still can't say enough about EJ as a leader and a face of the franchise and as quarterback of this team. He missed five easy passes he needs to hit. But he's impressive as hell.
1billsfan Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 As I said, his potential is beyond limit. I think that he can actually be GREAT. I will go as far as to say that I would rather have EJ on my football team than Cam Newton. I am just saying that I want to see him run more. Understandable, but for EJ to do that in his second game as an NFL rookie is number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ect ...IMO This guy's no fluke, he's got real NFL game and dang it, wouldn'tcha know he plays the QB position. This is a big deal.

boyst Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 1) Kyle Williams impressed the hell out of me. Coming into this game, I viewed him as a player who was all but finished. Want to talk about effort? The man gave everything he had in this football game. Dareus took on 2 or 3 blockers every play, it really helped free up Williams and Wiliams. Very happy there. Dareus was exhausted because the guy was taking hit after hit. He's quitely having a solid year. 2) Speaking of "Williams," Aaron Williams played very well imo in spite of that one incredibly stupid out of bounds hit. That hit, well, that hit stupid but it wasn't awful. He didn't light the guy up and pulled back, and more importantly he let those guys know if they go up for those lame duck Cam Newton passes they are going to get hit. Robert Woods and Steve Johnson are going to be two of the best WR's in the league in such different ways. Carolina fans asked me why we would not want Woods in the slot - why would we, SJ13 is a natural there. 4) Mario Williams earned his money today. He played at a superstar level, and is my favorite NFL player due to what he does off of the football field. He donates huge dollars to the Houston Police Department. That's enough for me. Yep, but I still hate Houston, the city. They are rookie NFL coaches and I think both of them got ahead of themselves and both knew it - Marrone is ultimately responsible as the HC. Does this mean we keep Carpenter? I have wondered why we haven't IR'd Hopkins. 8) Hey, I never complain about announcers, nor much else about telecasts. But today, I think that the camera man was on drugs. He was missing key shots. Am I the only one who noticed this? Did everyone elses feed cut to commercials in the middle of a play a few times? 9) EJ? His numbers were very good, and his potential is beyond limit. That said, count me as one who believes that he will need to run it himself to achieve his full potential, which imo is good enough to win a superbowl. Eager to hear how many of todays plays he called as an audible, faulty headset or other... 10) The OL played well today. Imo, the player who did the best work on this unit was Urbik. He looks to be in great physical shape, and he kicked some ass in this football game. Again, the camera work was bad; I welcome opinions on this comment. There was a ton of respect from the Panthers fans about how well our line played. It was amazing to see how good they looked against a very good DL front. 13) Kiko is going to be a flat out star. Gilmore and Keuchly are back to back selections and top 3 at their positions in the league. At one point on their forum their fans were laughing at how Alonso is no Keuchly. I reminded them that he was a rookie, and he then shined with several key plays. I did not throw it in their face when Keuchly had two back to back errors. 14) GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My observations from today's game: 1) McKelvin Vs. S. Smith, I thought he was going to struggle against him, when he was beat the DL helped him but he also shut him down on occasions. We all knew going in that the best way to play McKelvin is throw it at him enough and you'll beat him with the penalties. I kept trying to figure out why they didn't go to more curl routes, stop and go routes to draw McKelvin off because he doesn't pay enough attention. The Panthers playcalling sucked. 2) Designed quick plays to the slowest player on offense and on third downs, That is a no-no. EJ takes a little bit to get going - it was frustrating. I did not like the constant dumps to Chandler. We will have to wait to see what his stats are on targets. Anyone have'm? 3) Stupid penalties, I was going bananas with the refs in the GDT (for that I apologize) but we're responsible for those penalties. The no-call on the shove of SJ13 to the ground was bull ****. 4) Summers should be used as a runner and receiver out of the backfield, otherwise put Fred as a FB. I like that idea and it changes the dynamic on what we can do on offense. 5) More Easley and Gragg on offense, I know we should be patient with WRs but has Graham done to win the starting job. Graham did not get many targets. His deep route run was underthrown (or was it overthrown???). We need to take stabs at going down field like Carolina did today, we'll connect eventually. 6) Woods 2pt convertion catch was that of a playmaker, that was clutch. Coaches film on him will be interested. I want to see if he got free much during the game or just got lost. It appeared many times that he got the double coverage or took defenders out of their zones. #3 I'll be surprised if we see Woods on ST much longer. As has been mentioned in other threads, give Woods tweo years at most, he's be a true #1, which is fine as having Stevie as a #2 would be stronger than most teams At this point, I do not know if I want TJ Graham on ST. Goodwin is hurt. Who do you suggest we use? I can't really find the answer...Choice? #8 I think the problem is the TV crews aren't use to the speed the Bill's a running plays and are too busy showing replays or showing hot women i nthe stands to be ready for the next play. I noticed the same thing in a coupel of the pre-season games too. I read in a thread here there are no hot women in Buffalo
DC Tom Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 8) Hey, I never complain about announcers, nor much else about telecasts. But today, I think that the camera man was on drugs. He was missing key shots. Am I the only one who noticed this? The entire production team was atrocious. My favorite moment was when he was lining up for his last field goal, and they flashed a stat that he was 1 for 2, missing from 42 and hitting from 20. Uh, geniuses...he hit a 55-yarder, what game are you watching?
Meatloaf Sandwich Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 I agree with everything but #5.
boyst Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 5] The Aaron Williams penalty was criminally stupid and unconscionable. He actually looks decent as a safety, way better than I imagined. But the stupidity of that play gives me serious worry. Stop on this. I think we are alllllllll frustrated by it, but it was not that far out of line. The guy was on the sideline, Williams clearly did not look down and notice that - he should have. He didn't light the guy up or hit that hard but he did hit the guy in mid air and that hurts. That, while a penalty and could have been bigger then it was, sent a message to Panthers players. The Panthers WR's didn't quite go for the passes after that like they had been. They realized they were going to get hit.
mob16151 Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Was any player more inconsistent today then Summers?
Reed83HOF Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 (edited) This is hands down one of my favorite threads.... Just a couple comments: 1.) It was great and Awesome that EJ led us to that win. That being said, he has to get better with the accuracy of his passes. The WRs/RBs/TEs make some great catches one passes that could easily be incomplete. He can throw a long ball, but hasn't showed the ability to complete these passes as they are always off mark. His miss to Chandler was a sure TD & the INT at the end of the game were big mistakes. Yes he is a rookie, but he needs to work on that part of his game. I love his poise under pressure, the way he feels the pressure. I like that he checks down and doesn't force things right now at this stage of his career. I love how he led us back to win the game. If he can get his accuracy and timing down; this kid could be a great one! 2.) Kiko - what a pick...DROY? 3.) McKelvin - I couldn't understand why we brought him back with the size of the contract we gave him. He has played great this year. 4.) A. Williams - hell of a safety. How our old coaching staff misused him and couldn't see this is beyond me. 5.) Woods - will be huge for us as the year goes on and will be a great WR next year. 6.) Brown - we need a LG badly. Chandler - we need a TE badly. (Brown is safe for another week) 7.) FJ - this is all you need to know (heads up play by a smart player) Fred Jackson @Fred22Jackson 2m Everyone asking. Yes, that was an intentionally drop on 2 min drive. Can't get tackled there and have clock run. 8.) Mario caused a lot of disruption. 9.) Did not like Hackett's play calling and still don't buy into his & Marrone's philosophy - they need to run that clock down at the end of the half. 10.) Mike Pettine might not be with us that long if the D keeps playing like this - that concerns the hell out of me. 11.) When Gilmore & Brooks return this D will be even more fun to watch... 12.) The penalties need to end.... Edited September 15, 2013 by reed83 4th Rounder
Dan Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 I have no problem at all with A. Williams hit and penalty. This team has rolled over and been the nice guy for entirely too long. We need some guys with attitude and hard hits like that can define a defense! Yeah, he doesn't need to do that all the time, but I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a Bills team look that fired up out there. Clean up the crap holding penalties and I can live with a bone crunching hit or two. It's hard to believe Bruce never had a 5 sack game. But, this was a big time game for Mario. He looked like a beast grinding up Cam and stickin him in the freezer! EJ was everything we could ever hope for in a rookie in nly his second career start. He's got alot of room for improvement, but guess what... so does EVERY rookie QB. But without a doubt, he looks like a legitimate franchise QB. I think the best thing to have happened to him is hurting his knee in Preseason. They seem reluctant to call alot of designed QB runs and that's a good thing. We don't need a runnign QB, that can throw a little. The league is set up for passers to succeed. He needs to learn to pass first.. and run later. Kiko is looking like an awesome pick! Lovin this guy.
