ExiledInIllinois
The Niagara Falls thread reminded me of a question I had last time I visted WNY in August. Has anybody ever been to Chestnut Ridge and looked north off the sledding hill by the Casino/toboggan chutes? Looking almost due north, one can see the City of BFLO to the slight northwest and beyond that, further NNW, Niagara Falls. The Falls is very clear and you can see a little bit of the mist. You can also see The Ralph/Fieldhouse very close... The Lake, etc.. etc... Anyway my question is... Looking to the north, north east, one sees a group of buildings... A city. It can't be BFLO. It can't be Niagara Falls... It is too far east. Is that Rochester?? Can one see Rochester from Chestnut Ridge? mrags
I love it there. One of my original "date" spots. Hike the Eternal Flame trail in the early afternoon and finish there right at sunset and when it gets dark. One of the only real views of the city from afar and up high. When I used to live in Vegas I used to have tons of places to drive around the putter limits of the city to see all the lights in their glory. Some of the spots were amazing. Had a picnic there in early August and we treked around... First time my children were there in the summer... We'd take them in the winter to sled when were in town... But haven't been there since they were small. That city has to be Rochester?? I didn't think one could see that far. It was a stunning summer/clear day! bbb
I don't ever remember seeing the Falls from there, much less Rochester.

ExiledInIllinois
It was very clear. Buffalo was obvious and the buildings past it had to be The Falls... Slight mist. What I was wondering about would have been all the way to my right looking north... That would be east. Big buildings... Group of them... Off of course way along the horizon and very far off. What else could it be? I thought I had the picture, must have been on my son's camera... I am gonna have him text me them! Large group of buildings, far far away on the horizon to the far east... What else is out there? Lockport? It can't be Rochester, I am looking on Google Earth and that is way far away. mrags
Lockport possibly. Maybe even something like Batavia. I have no idea.
ExiledInIllinois
Lockport possibly. Maybe even something like Batavia. I have no idea. I was thinking the same thing... That view had would put it right in that Lockport/Batavia area...?? I haven't been there in a while, are there a few tall buildings in their downtown area(s). Again, it was way of to the right (east)... Far on the horizon. EDIT: I was thinking UB. But that would be way close! mrags
Toronto maybe? It's directly across the lake. Not as far as Rochester with a straight shot across Ontario and because its water, there's no hills, land to compete with it. Just another thought. Because TOR would put it between BFLO/Falls and Rochester... Google Earth shows it in line w/BFLO and The Falls. Can you see that far from Orchard Park/Chestnut Ridge? Right across Lake Ontario! Again, this would be @ the Casino level even better view from up the steps of the toboggan chutes. I am still waiting for him to text me the images... ExiledInIllinois
Yeah. Well know more then. I know I've always wondered this question myself. I am still waiting for the pics... The little creep went to a football game w/ my 20 bucks! LoL... Probably gets a million texts back and forth and can't find time for me HIS FATHER! Yet the 20 bucks is urgent! :wallbash: I looked up the picture online... But it cuts off the east portion and that cluster of buildings. Boy does the Fieldhouse look huge!: Notice The Falls to the left on the horizon. What I vividly remember is a cluster of tall buildings to the far right (not shown)... Way to the right... It can't be TOR because Google earth shows TOR almost in line with BFLO, NF... ?? Lockport and Batavia are not near one another. I know.. But would be to the right in the above picture! Picture is looking north.

On the board here? It does sound familar! Deja vu or Vuja de for me... Anyway... We were just there in early August and it was an exceptionally clear day (Saturday, late afternoon)... It just struck me as odd... Big group of buildings way on the horizon (like the Niagara Falls one)... BUT all the way to the right (east)... That would have to be Rochester? What other big cities are there with skyscrapers??? The day we were there, The Falls was way clearer! That would put Rochester on the horizonin line with NF?? Not just off to the right a little bit. But hey, nobody knows here. Edited September 14, 2013 by mrags

Not just off to the right a little bit. But hey, nobody knows here. That Niagara Falls thread jogged my memory. Rochester I would say it would be a 30-45* angle. 90* would put you in line with the Finger Lakes (of course obsurred by the ridge iteself). Gotta be Rochester... About the same latitude as NF across the horizon... And if one could see that... Anyway... Very interesting viewpoint. Like I said... The Ralph and The Fieldhouse really stick out! Just Jack
http://goo.gl/maps/S1IlW "A" dot is the field house/stadium, Chestnut Ridge is just south east of it. Depew or Lancaster maybe?
